Popular 'Hyperbole And A Half' Web Comic Allie Brosh Returns With 'Stunningly Brilliant' Blog Post

Allie Brosh

Allie Brosh, the author of the hugely popular blog and web comic Hyperbole And A Half, has returned with her first post since she announced her fight with depression back in October of 2011

The internet is a happier place today with Brosh's return.

Hyperbole And A Half is crudely drawn web comic crafted with Microsoft paint that highlights the normal and the absurd of Brosh's life and observations. Brosh's quirky, uplifting and humorous style was an immediate hit and helped her build a loyal following that includes over 300,000 Likes on her Facebook page

Which made it all the more shocking to her fans when she suddenly posted a heart wrenching comic depicting her struggle with depression.

After her final two posts that addressed her depression, Brosh stopped updating her blog, posting comments, stopped tweeting, stopped updating her Facebook page. She resurfaced briefly to let fans know she was OK and was dealing with getting a handle on her depression.

Last night, Brosh announced on her Facebook page and in a post on Hyperbole And A Half that there would be a new comic telling the story of her struggles with depression over the last two years.

She announced the new post in typical Brosh style. With a drawing of an airplane.

Allie Brosh Hyperbole and a half

In her "Depression: Part 2" post, Brosh's description of what she's been going through with depression is a fascinating, unique and emotionally personal look into her life and the lives of those who must deal with this disease.

In an email to Business Insider, Jonathan Rottenberg, Ph.D., Associate Professor, Department of Psychology University of South Florida, called Brosh's return post "stunningly brilliant."

Rottenberg explained what is brilliant about the post is that it captures recovery from depression as not being an easy or linear process; it can be as confusing as depression itself.

She candidly illustrates how difficult it is to fight the feeling of "nothing," what its like to struggle with notions of suicide and how it can feel like your brain is playing games with you you don't understand.

Allie Brosh hyperbole and a half

Brosh tackles it all with her weapons of choice, art and words. She's also mentioned she's finished a draft of her upcoming book.

Welcome back Allie Brosh, the internet has missed you.

Meet The Women Who Are Changing The World

Inside The Secret World Of Prostitution At The Cannes Film Festival

Nicole Kidman Cannes film festival paparazziIn 2010, the late Roger Ebert tweeted: "Hookers stand out in Cannes. They're the ones who are well-dressed and not smoking."

While the annual Cannes Film Festival has become famous for images of A-list stars arriving via yacht for star-studded movie premieres, the real drama is what happens on the periphery of the paparazzis' lens.

The Hollywood Reporter has done an exposé on the sex-fueled sub-culture surrounding the glitzy film festival in an article titled "$40,000-a-Night Escorts: Secrets of the Cannes Call Girls":

Every year, women ranging from what the French call putes de luxes (high-priced call girls), who charge an average of $4,000 a night, to local streetwalkers, who normally get little more than $50 or $75 an hour turning tricks in nearby Nice, converge on Cannes for what one Parisian hooker calls "the biggest payday of the year" ...

The women ran the gamut, from full-time escorts to models to beauty queens, and they serviced men in hotels, on yachts and in the palatial villas in the hills above Cannes, police said.

Woman on boat, mysterious"We all look forward to it," a local Cannes prostitute, who goes by the name of Daisy, tells THR.

Another source explains that the most beautiful call girls know to target the high-end hotels "where all the Arabs stay."

"They can make up to $40,000 a night," the source continues. "Arabs are the most generous people in the world. If they like you, they will give you a lot of money. At Cannes, they carry money around in wads of 10,000 euros. To them, it's just like paper. They don't even like to count it. They'll just hand it to the girls without thinking. I know the system."

Part of that "system" includes "yacht girls" on the 30 or 40 luxury yachts anchored in the bay at Cannes.

Woman on yacht boat"Every boat has about 10 girls on it; they are usually models, and they are usually nude or half nude. It's drugs and drink and beautiful women," says the source. "The girls are all waiting for their envelopes at the end of the night. It's been going on there for 60 years."

The envelope, presented as a "gift" to the yacht girls, is how most prostitutes get paid during the festival.

But not all women getting "gifts" are local, French prostitutes.

"The line between professional prostitutes and B- or C-list Hollywood actresses and models who accept payment for sex with rich older men is sometimes very blurred," one film industry veteran explains to THR.

This year's Cannes Film Festival runs from May 15 - 26.

Judging From This Email, The City Of Chattanooga Is Pretty Upset About 'Iron Man 3'

iron man 3 tony stark

I haven't seen "Iron Man 3."

But apparently, there's a scene in the movie where Robert Downey Jr.'s character, Tony Stark, tries to use the Internet while in Chattanooga, Tennessee, and he finds it very slow.

This depicition has the city of Chattanooga rather upset.

A spokesperson for its chamber of commerce just emailed us to say so. Here's the relevant bit of that note:

For those who plan to hit theaters to catch "Iron Man 3," keep an eye out for the inaccurate depiction of Chattanooga, Tennessee. In the movie, Iron Man had a hard time with a slow Internet connection. If Iron Man had visited the real Chattanooga, he would have been saving the world with the help of the first American city to offer gig-a-second Internet speeds (1,000 megabits per second), which Chattanooga has made available to every home and business across a 600 square mile service area since 2010. Some fiction vs. fact factoids to keep an eye out for:

FICTION:

In the movie Iron Man struggles with slow Internet service while in Chattanooga.

FACT:

In 2010, Chattanooga surprised America becoming the first American city to have a community-wide “Gig” fiber network offering up to 1 gigabit-per-second internet and broadband service, with its network covering the entire 600 square mile area and every 150,000 plus homes. And what’s unique about Chattanooga’s gig network is its partnership with the municipal utility company EPB to create its smart grid inlaid with the, which not only increases the internet speed, but also benefits the city through better connectivity.

FICTION:

In the movie Iron Man wanted to escape the slow internet speed in Chattanooga

FACT:

Geeks and techies are flocking to Chattanooga to experiment with the city’s “Living Lab.” This summer, entrepreneurs and startups from across the globe are vying for five spots in the city’s accelerator challenge GIGTANK, the only world’s accelerator program that focuses on the utilization of a living fiber network.

Martha Stewart Met 2 Of Her Match.com Suitors On The 'Today' Show

Within hours of joining dating website Match.com, Martha Stewart already had more than 1,000 suitors hoping to meet her. Two of those lucky men got to meet the media mogul on the "Today" show this morning.

Stewart, who created a firestorm when she announced she would give online dating a shot in late April, told Matt Lauer that it was "difficult" to narrow down the field from thousands of men, and that she was "slightly apprehensive, but not nervous," about meeting the final two in person.

Both men are 68, divorced, and work out regularly. The first was Stan, a filmmaker who shoots independent features and commercials (including one of Martha for Kmart in the past) and lives in NYC. He brought her flowers on the show, and told Lauer that he has always liked Stewart.

The second bachelor, Larry, is an executive from New Jersey. He has similar interests to the lifestyle tycoon, like hiking, swimming, and philanthropy. He admitted he was worried contacting Stewart might make him seem like an opportunist, "and that's not me."

"None of these have been set up, none of this is fake," Stewart said to Lauer earlier in the segment. "And I just want everybody to know that, because I want other women in a similar situation to know that it can be done. I hope!"

It may not be "fake," but Stewart is certainly milking the publicity. Her website is asking people to vote on which of the two bachelors is right for her.

Watch the full "Today" show segment below. And scroll down to see "Saturday Night Live's" hilarious take on Stewart's online dating endeavors.

A Victoria's Secret Model Used Instagram To Deflect A Potential Drug Scandal

Cara Delevingne

A few days ago, the paparazzi photographed Victoria's Secret model Cara Delevingne dropping a bag of "mysterious white powder" outside her apartment.

Pictures showed the model trying to cover the bag with her shoe and handbag and laughing.

The incident might have put 20-year-old Delevingne's career in jeopardy. Brands like Victoria's Secret and H&M have used her to market lines for teens, and a drug scandal would tarnish her image.

H&M also fired spokeswoman Kate Moss for being busted with cocaine in 2005.

The brand was reportedly "investigating" the incident with Delevingne, but never took action.

Why wasn't Delevingne vilified like Moss?

Kat Stoeffel at The Cut has some ideas

First, Delevingne's snafu occurred the day before the Met Gala. The event was covered by virtually all major news outlets, meaning that the press and public were distracted.

But Delevingne took things a step further to ensure that no one was paying attention to that little bag of white powder.

She posted an Instagram photo of herself locking lips with actress Sienna Miller:

sienna miller cara delevingne kissing

The sexy image went viral and dominated headlines from the event.

By Tuesday, no one cared about the white powder incident at all.

Brand New 21st Century Fox Unveils Logo — And It Isn't Great

$

Last month, Rupert Murdoch announced that Twentieth Century Fox was entering the 21st century, albeit 13 years late, by splitting its publishing and entertainment units and renaming the News Corp TV and film entertainment divisions "21st Century Fox."

Things get a little confusing because even though the newly named company will parent FX and the 20th Century Fox, those entities will keep their names. Meaning that there will be both a 21st Century Fox and a 20th Century Fox.

Regardless, Murdoch sent colleagues an announcement unveiling the new company's design. And it looks like this:21st century fox logo

Which kind of looks like a combination of FX's old logo:fx old logo

And Fox Searchlight:Fox Searchlight logo

Deadline editor Nikki Finke got her hands on Murdoch's morning memo, which reads:

Today I am proud to unveil our new logo, which serves as a powerful symbol of the inspiration and high bar set by our company. Like our name, the logo reflects the rich creative heritage of Twentieth Century Fox and signals the promise of the 21st century and our restless drive toward the future.

Ultimately, our new logo celebrates the powerful commitment of you and your colleagues to the excellence and innovation that will propel 21st Century Fox forward.

We, however, fail to see power exuding from the new logo. The font almost appears too casual for such a substantial media giant.

What do you think?

Filming for the sequel, officially titled "Anchorman: The Legend Continues," has been taking place for the past few weeks in Atlanta.

This past week people have been tweeting images of celebrities on set ranging from Amy Poehler and Jim Carrey to Kanye West today.

According to sightings, it sounds like the crew is filming a huge rival newscaster fight, similar to the huge news brawl that occurred in the first film.

If West is a newscaster, that's pretty awesome.

'The Great Gatsby' Reviews Suggest It Could Be The Biggest Disappointment Of The Year

$
0
0

daisy great gatsby.PNG

We've been waiting a long time to see "The Great Gatsby" on the big screen.

Last year, Warner Bros. pushed director Baz Luhrmann's adaptation of the classic novel back six months to avoid clashing with Christmas releases.

Since then, numerous excellent trailers for the film have debuted, the film has helped boost sales for the book immensely, but "Great Gatsby" reviews are sounding like Luhrmann's latest could be one huge Hollywood disappointment.

The most critical reviews say it's too flashy, too over the top, and 3D lyrical poetry coming at you off screen is a bit much for some.

Granted, if you're going into the film expecting a "typical" adaptation, this won't be the film for you. Just look at Luhrmann's previous works, "Romeo + Juliet" and "Moulin Rouge!"

Not all the press is bad. Many are satisfied with Leonardo DiCaprio's take on the wealthy Jay Gatsby and were blown away by a surprise, brief role by newcoming actress Elizabeth Debicki.

Though the overall film rating continues to decline on Rotten Tomatoes—it's currently at 43%— the movie is still tracking high among those who wish to see it at 98%.

These initial reviews may mean nothing. Currently, 65% of all ticket sales for Thursday on Fandango are for "Gatsby." According to the ticket seller, 94% of those seeing the film said they want to see the movie for its costumes, set design, and "grand scale imagery" while 61% consider themselves fans of the director.

The film stars DiCaprio as the titular character, Carey Mulligan as his naive, married love interest, Daisy Buchanan, Tobey Maguire as narrator (Nick Carraway), and Joel Edgerton (Tom Buchanan).

Here's what you should know before seeing the film.

No one questions whether Luhrmann stays true to source material.

The Hollywood Reporter (THR):

"Luhrmann's personal connection and commitment to the material remains palpable, which makes for a film that, most of the time, feels vibrantly alive while remaining quite faithful to the spirit, if not the letter or the tone, of its source."

leonardo dicaprio the great gatsbyFor the most part, people love DiCaprio's take on the famed character of Gatsby.

NYT:

"His charisma has increased as his youthful prettiness has worn and thickened away, and he is beautiful, sad, confident and desperate in exactly the way Gatsby should be."

L.A. Times

"DiCaprio successfully calls on all his movie star charisma to become the film's only person of interest … reminiscent of Orson Welles' youthful and energetic Charles Foster Kane."

Hitfix:

"DiCaprio is a total misfire as Gatsby, thick and expressionless and unable to evoke any real sense of longing."

However, "Gatsby" does something we feared it would do — rely too much on Tobey Maguire for narration:

Variety

"Transformed into voiceover, the running first-person narration of Nick Carraway (here played by Tobey Maguire) turns stilted and dry (presumably a problem the silent version avoided)."

THR:

"The final stretch is slowed by too much commentary by Nick, who has become a bit of a bore by now."

No one cares for Carey Mulligan's interpretation of the wealthy, desired Daisy.

L.A. Times:

"Luhrmann's direction of his actors cudgels every instinct of naturalness out of them and pushes everyone, even as instinctively genuine an actress as Mulligan, toward overblown characterizations and stilted line reading."

NY Mag

"She’s down-to-earth pretty (a tad mousy) rather than unattainably glamorous. She does well in Daisy’s most challenging scene, in which she has to oscillate between the desires of two impossible men, the monomaniacal Gatsby and the overentitled Buchanan. But it’s possible to forget she’s in the movie."

the great gatsby elizabeth debickiInstead, the real stars of the film—Elizabeth Debicki and Amitabh Bachchan—are barely in it.

Variety

"The lithe, long-limbed newcomer Elizabeth Debicki as gabby golf pro Jordan Baker, and, in a single scene that marks his belated Hollywood debut, Bollywood superstar Amitabh Bachchan as the flamboyant Jewish “gambler,” Meyer Wolfsheim."

NY Mag:

"She's [Mulligan] upstaged by an Australian actress named Elizabeth Debicki, who, as Jordan Baker, is all sleek insouciance, an archetypal New Yorker flapper cartoon brought to vivid life. You could project on Debicki till the cows come home."

Hitfix:

"Newcomer Elizabeth Debicki is exceptional as Jordan Baker, a minor character who seems to actually threaten to bring the film to life during each of her scenes, but it's not enough."

3D may be a bit much on the eyes.

USA Today:

"Luhrmann's 3-D visual flourishes feel superfluous: Occasionally, words pop out across the screen as Nick feverishly writes Gatsby's tale … None of it contributes to a sense of immersion."

the great gatsbyIt's over the top with less focus on character depth and more on design and visuals.

Variety:

"He [Luhrmann] unleashes every manipulation he can think of — sepia flashbacks, smash zooms, split screens, superimpositions, period newsreel footage, new footage degraded to resemble period newsreel footage — all of it coming at you in three stereoscopic dimensions."

Hitfix:

"Technically, Luhrmann's in show-off mode from the opening of the film to the close, and it's all very impressive in terms of sound and image. His use of 3D is dazzling as a way of drawing you into these spaces, and the production design and the costuming is all opulent, suggestive of an era rather than slavishly accurate."

USA today:

"The director has fashioned a gaudy long-form music video — all kaleidoscopic spectacle and little substance — rather than a radiant new take on an American literary classic."

The Wrap:

"This film marks the official moment in which Baz Luhrmann's signature style has become self-parody. So we beat on, boats against the current, jumping the shark."

But that's Luhrmann. If you loved Moulin Rouge, you should enjoy Gatsby.

Variety:

"Of course, to accuse Luhrmann (who also co-wrote the screenplay with frequent collaborator Craig Pearce) of overkill is a bit like faulting a leopard for his spots."

Overall Consensus: Check it out

"The Great Gatsby" is one of the most difficult films to adapt to the big screen. There have been four previous attempts between TV and film. If you're a fan of Luhrmann, it sounds like you'll love it, just know you're in for a lot of sensationalism.

"Gatsby" is in theaters Friday, May 10.

Here's The Difference In Musical Tastes Between Republicans And Democrats

RTXY8UI

Jay-Z and Beyoncé expose the biggest divide in music culture between Republicans and Democrats, according to a new comprehensive poll of musical preferences conducted by Public Policy Polling.

The poll, which was provided to Business Insider ahead of its release later Thursday, shows that both stars are widely popular with Democrats but earn poor marks with Republicans.

Among Democrats, 35 percent view Jay-Z favorably and 63 percent view Beyoncé favorably, compared with 31 percent and 19 percent who view each unfavorably.

Republicans, however, trend much more toward viewing the pair unfavorably. Only 15 percent have a favorable opinion of Jay-Z, and 36 percent for Beyoncé. Meanwhile, 53 percent view Jay-Z unfavorably, and 42 percent feel the same about Beyoncé.

The pair recently caught the ire of numerous Republican lawmakers after a trip to Cuba to celebrate their five-year anniversary. The Republican National Committee also questioned whether President Barack Obama had a hand in approving their trip.

Jay-Z pushed back with a track in which he rapped, "Politicians never did s— for me, except lie to me, distort history. They wanna give me jail time and a fine? Fine, let me commit a real crime."

The PPP poll has a number of other interesting nuggets:

  • Most Republicans think Justin Timberlake should spend his time playing golf. Most Democrats, however, think he should be making music. Overall, only 7 percent of respondents said he should be spending his time "getting back together with 'N Sync," which is obviously disappointing.
  • Republicans and Democrats agree, however, that Justin Timberlake would make the best president out of a list of popular music stars. Both parties chose him out of a list that included Adele, Justin Bieber, Beyonce, Jay-Z, Chris Brown, Rihanna, and Lady Gaga.
  • Both Republicans and Democrats also think that "Snoop Dogg" should be the name used by the hip-hop aficionado.
  • 20 percent of Democrats say they have "been to the club." Only 10 percent of Republicans have "been to the club."
  • Across demographic lines, dubstep is viewed highly unfavorably. Its favorable-to-unfavorable split stands at just 14-38. 47 percent are not sure, which makes sense.
  • The most favorable genre of music is classical. The least favorable is rap.
  • Only 13 percent of respondents have a favorable opinion of Chris Brown. Only 8 percent think Rihanna should get back together with him.

On H&M Shoot, Beyoncé's Hair Came With Its Own Special Rules And Requirements

Beyonce with curious hairstyle

If you think that the color of Beyoncé's hair in her new H&M campaign is merely an aesthetic choice by the advertiser, think again.

According to a source close to the production of the commercial, Beyoncé doesn't let anyone — not even her sponsors — decide her hairstyles. And she has different hair in every commercial. Each do was the product of Beyoncé herself and her retinue of hair handlers — the client did not have a say in it.

The two ads released so far, "Beach Blues" and "Wet," are part of a series of four commercials the fashion brand is expected to release this year, each representing a different element: earth, water, wind, and fire. Wind and fire are yet to be aired.

Our source told us that her hair was colored to embody the essence of each element and "were discussed to reflect her different Mrs. Carter personae." (Carter is the last name of Beyoncé's husband, Jay-Z and is the title she is using for her latest year-long tour, “The Mrs. Carter Show World Tour.”

The source also told us that "Beyoncé has her own hair people and the hair choices are entirely hers. No one else has a say, for real. And sometimes it's not great." The source referred to a recent commercial for O2 – a British mobile telecommunications provider – as a case in point (see below).

A recent AceMetrix study we noted earlier revealed that consumers prefer commercials that feature a blonde Beyoncé to brunette. The campaign will show the singer with black hair in two out of the four spots, blonde hair in one and dreadlocks in another.

Here's the O2 ad:

Kate Upton Vogue Cover

After landing back-to-back Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Edition covers, 20-year-old Kate Upton appears on the June cover of American Vogue for the first time.

Upton, who is heralded as "The Hottest Supermodel On Earth" in the issue, has also appeared on the cover of Vogue Italia and British Vogue.

Upton's coveted cover comes after a Victoria's Secret casting agent said of the model: "She’s like a footballer’s wife, with the too-blond hair and that kind of face that anyone with enough money can go out and buy."

But inside the Vogue issue, Upton says she doesn't listen to her haters.

“I love my body. It’s what God gave me,” Upton says, adding that she's “so proud” of her boobs.

"I never set out to be on the runway," Upton reveals. "I’ve always loved fashion, but it’s not what I set out to do.”

Upton explains, "I trust my career path. I would love to have my own lingerie line" and notes that she's “very interested in acting.”

When she was younger, Upton says "I didn’t buy the magazines that had models on the covers, because I didn’t know them. So I think this kind of gives me, as a model, a personality that people can connect with."

Upton's June issue of Vogue hits newsstands on May 21.

Until then, check out her past international Vogue covers.

'24' May Return To Fox As A Limited Series

jack bauer 24 kiefer sutherland

Jack Bauer is returning to TV.

Last night, Deadline reported Fox was talking about bringing "24" back as a limited series.

Soon after the former show's former executive producer, David Fury, confirmed the report on Twitter

"Yep, I'm pulling double duty w/TYRANT. Whoo & Hoo!"

Fury was then asked by a fan whether it would be "8 or 12," to which he responded the latter.

Some are concluding this means the series will be 12 episodes long.

Again, this doesn't mean we'll see new seasons of the show.

Deadline reports the idea to bring back the show came from showrunner Howard Gordon. He currently serves as executive producer on Showtime's "Homeland" and FX's "Tyrant" along with Fury.

Gordon would likely come back for the return

For a long time there was talk of a "24" movie in the works. As recent as last month, Sutherland told The Sun he would be open to work on one

Gordon earlier said Sutherland's work on that series prevented them from moving forward with any sort of film.

Sutherland's schedule is more free now as Fox recently cancelled "Touch," a show in which he starred.

Though it's not confirmed yet, Deadline says Sutherland is in talks to reprise the lead role of Jack Bauer.

"24" ran for eight seasons on Fox ending in 2010.

More from Zimbio:

Julia Roberts: Be a good son/daughter yourself.

"I try to call my mother, Betty, with more regularity because I think, 'What if Hazel didn’t call me for two weeks?' I’m able to see her mothering now from a different vantage point.”

Heidi Klum: Remember, kids will be kids.

"To kind of roll with the flow. Our house is full of life, laughter, and mayhem.

Every dinnertime something spills. Or they are wearing uniforms for school, and when we have breakfast in the morning, food gets all over their hands. You can tell them a thousand times 'Do not wipe it on your pants,' and sure enough they wipe it on their pants.

But that’s when you roll with it. My house is not like a museum. You can see that children live there."

Salma Hayek: Cherish every moment.

“When Valentina was not even 1-month-old, my aunt [told me]:

‘Put her to sleep yourself every night. Sing to her and cradle her in your arms and sit by her side – every night. Because one day you won’t be able to, and it’s going to happen really fast.'”
