How Comcast's $4.4B Investment In The Olympics Will Pay Off Big-Time

$

comcast brian robertsComcast CEO Brian L. Roberts said Thursday that Comcast doesn’t expect to make a giant profit from the 2016 summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro but defended its heavy spending to acquire rights to additional Olympic telecasts.

“I am so glad we stomached it,” he said of Comcast’s 2011 agreement to spend $4.38 billion to acquire additional rights.

“It is a fantastic platform for our company.”

Also read: NBC Wins Olympic Games TV Rights Through 2020, IOC Confirms

Speaking to the Economic Club of Washington, Roberts cited NBC Universal’s successful use of the London Olympics to launch "The Voice" as just one example of the kind of synergies and promotional opportunities that having the Olympics package offers Comcast.

“As a business matter, it is the engine, but in and of itself we are not expecting it to make a huge profit,” Roberts said in answering a question from the club’s president, David M. Rubenstein, co-founder and co-CEO of the Carlyle Group.

Roberts said that the addition of golf as an Olympic sport in Rio will add to the benefits, allowing NBCU to offer even more choices of events on its broadcast and cable channel. The biggest benefit, he said, however, is the Olympic package’s visibility to distribution partners and to employees.

Roberts said Comcast had expected viewership of the London summer games last year would drop 10 percent from Beijing four years earlier both because of the time-zone change and because the 2012 games wouldn’t have Michael Phelps winning eight gold medals.

Instead, viewership for the London games rose 10 percent, allowing NBCU to break even instead of taking a $200 million loss. “If that continues in Sochi [Russia, home of the 2014 winter games] and beyond, that will be OK,” he said.

Roberts during a Q&A session generally sidestepped specific questions about NBCU.

Asked about reports that Jimmy Fallon would soon take over "The Tonight Show" from Jay Leno, he said, “I think Jay Leno is fantastic,” but then declined to discuss “personnel matters.”

“I think [NBCU president-CEO] Steve Burke is doing a marvelous job,” said Roberts, calling the high-visibility TV network business “an imperfect business where everything is in a fish bowl.”

Roberts described NBCU Entertainment Chairman Robert Greenblatt as “a super person picking shows” but otherwise declined to discuss NBCU’s fortunes.

Roberts said Comcast’s biggest surprise of its NBCU purchase turned up in an unexpected place. It was the value of the NBCU’s "Harry Potter" theme-park concept.

“A business that we didn’t count on that has proved to be amazing was the theme park business,” he said. “We had the company signed up and we had to wait a year to close and in the middle of that Harry Potter opened up in Orlando. Attendance surged 40 percent every day since then.

“We have about a billion dollars in cash flow coming from theme parks. We had zero in our business model when we bought the company,” said Roberts, adding Comcast is planning additional theme parks in the U.S. and overseas.

Roberts announced at the event that Comcast would begin rolling out voice actuated remote controls to its subscribers.

Museum goers were surprised to see actress Tilda Swinton live at the Museum of Modern Art (MoMa).

The "Moonrise Kingdom" actress was on display at the MoMa in New York City Saturday as part of an exhibit.

"The Maybe" showcased Swinton sleeping in a glass box for the day with a mattress, pillow, linen, water, and spectacles.

The Gothamist reports Swinton has been talking with the MoMa about showcasing this exhibit since 2005, and that it will run several more times throughout the year, "each unannounced and in a different location in the Museum."

This isn't the first time the 52-year-old Academy Award winner has slept in public.

Swinton first performed "The Maybe" in 1995 at the Serpentine Gallery in London.

10 People Who Could Replace Jimmy Fallon On His 'Late Night' Show

$

Seth Meyers Amy Poehler Weekend Update SNLIf all of the reports prove true and Jimmy Fallon takes over Jay Leno's 11:35 p.m. "Tonight Show," it will open up a hosting spot on Fallon's 12:35 p.m. "Late Night."

The New York Post is reporting a clear front-runner for the job, but there are nine other hosts and comedians who may also be in the mix and could do an equally great job.

But what does it take to be NBC's "Late Night" host?

  • Lorne Michaels' approval. The "Saturday Night Live" executive producer is also the executive producer of "Late Night." His blessing means everything to NBC brass, giving "SNL" alum a leg up on getting the gig. Not that their improv experience hurts.
  • A young, hip host. "Since its inception in 1982, 'Late Night' has consistently been the youngest and hippest franchise in network talk," writes Splitsider. "The show's three hosts — David Letterman, Conan O'Brien, and Jimmy Fallon — while wildly different from one another, have all shared an experimental edge to their shows that other talk franchises don't have."
  • A recognizable host. "When Conan O'Brien got the gig nearly 20 years ago, he was a 'Simpsons' and 'SNL' writer with no on-camera experience," adds Splitsider. "Jimmy Fallon was a well-known TV personality when he was crowned the host of 'Late Night' in 2009, meaning that the network will probably seek out somebody closer to his level of fame and recognizability this time around too."

These 10 people have the ultimate combination of skills to be the next "Late Night" host.

10. We'd suggest Howard Stern, but he's already called the idea "insulting."

When Howard Stern's name was brought up earlier this month as a possible replacement for Jimmy Fallon, the radio host called the idea "an insult."

While Stern acts as a judge on NBC's "America's Got Talent," he said he will NOT be hosting "Late Night" on the network.

"First of all, what an insult, like, all the years of my career. I'm like, the biggest guy in radio, I've done film, I've done television," Stern exclaimed on "The Howard Stern Show." "I mean, they act like I'm some kind of f------ beginner or something. Maybe if I'm really nice to NBC they'll let me take over Carson Daly's show at like 2 o'clock in the morning."

Stern then kindly pointed out that Fallon likely makes "about a tenth" of his own salary and sarcastically joked that he has also been hired to anchor "NBC Nightly News," as well as guest star on "Community," "Parks & Recreation" and "Whitney."

9. Andy Cohen is already an executive and on-air host.

Not only is Andy Cohen the host of Bravo's live, late-night talk show "Watch What Happens Live," he is also the Executive Vice President of Development and Talent at the Bravo cable television network, a subsidiary of NBC Universal — the same network on which "Late Night" airs.

He is also the author of a memoir titled "Most Talkative: Stories from the Front Lines of Pop Culture" and is the first openly gay host of a late night talk show, which could make things interesting.

Not to mention, Cohen is close personal friends with Jimmy Fallon, which could make the transition very smooth.

8. Carson Daly's show currently follows Fallon's, but he won't get the gig.

Despite the fact that Carson Daly's "Last Call with Carson Daly" airs directly after Jimmy Fallon's "Late Night," no one is talking about the former MTV "TRL" host taking over Fallon's gig.

For one, he's not a comedian. At all. And secondly, the 39-year-old's show format is more music-based and rogue, often taping shows on the road

The Overly-Attached Girlfriend Explains What It's Like Being A Wildly Popular Internet Meme

Last June, 21-year-old Laina Morris uploaded her first-ever YouTube video for a Justin Bieber contest.

The goal of the contest was to take Bieber's popular song, "Boyfriend" and change the lyrics to "Girlfriend." To stand out, Morris wrote her version from the perspective of a stalker.

While Morris only placed second in the competition, she won the Internet. Within 24 hours, her creepy "Girlfriend" song had been watched 1 million times. Soon, her face was being spread across Reddit with white, bold font laid over top of it as a meme dubbed "The Overly-Attached Girlfriend."

Since then, she's been able to turn her meme into a business. She's worked with advertisers such as Kia Soul and she's been on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon.

What's it like to be an internet sensation, especially for something that's a little bit mortifying?

"It's definitely weird…but it's fun. I like it a lot," Morris tells Business Insider. "It's weird when I go on Pinterest or Reddit for myself just browsing and there I am."

Here's how Morris became famous online, and how her life has changed since she became the Overly-Attached Girlfriend meme.

'The Croods' Overpower 'Olympus' — Here's Your Box-Office Roundup

the croods emma stone

DreamWorks Animation can breathe a huge sigh of relief.

After a dismal end to 2012, the animation studio had nothing to worry about with "The Croods" out this weekend.

The film, about the first caveman family, performed better than the release of "How to Train Your Dragon" back in March 2010.

Meanwhile, Gerard Butler's cold streak has come to and end at the box office. After a slew of romance flops at in 2012, "Olympus Has Fallen" soared at theaters opening weekend.

The only new release that didn't catch on this weekend was Tina Fey's rom-com, "Admission," which suffered from underwhelming reviews

"Silver Linings Playbook" finally bows out of the top ten in its 19-week at theaters. The Bradley Cooper and Jennifer Lawrence comedy has now earned $216 million worldwide.

Also out of the top ten this week are Nicholas Sparks' "Safe Haven" and teen film "21 and Over."

Here are this week's winners and losers in Hollywood:

10. After dipping four spots, The Rock's "Snitch" just makes it into the top ten this week earning $1.9 million. The Lionsgate film has now earned $40.3 million after five weekends.

9. "Identity Thief" featuring Melissa McCarthy also fell four spots with $2.5 million in its seventh weekend. Universal's comedy has managed to bring in $135.9 million worldwide earning the majority of its money at the domestic box office.

8. "Jack the Giant Slayer" took a tumble with three new films out earning just under $3 million. Now out for a month, the fairytale-inspired movie featuring Ewan McGregor has earned $119.6 million worldwide. The film is estimated to have cost Warner Bros. $195 million to produce.

7. Steve Carell's "The Incredible Burt Wonderstone" drops 58 percent in week two earning $4.3 million. The film, which cost an estimated $30 million to produce, has earned $17.4 million since its debut.

6. After debuting successfully in three theaters last weekend, "Spring Breakers" opens in more than 1,110 theaters bringing in $5 million The indie film with James Franco and Selena Gomez had a low budget estimated at $2 million.

5. Tina Fey and Paul Rudd's "Admission" didn't get a warm welcome in theaters. The film, with an estimated budget of $13 million earned $6.4 million.

4. Halle Berry's "The Call" drops two spots earning $8.7 million in week two. The TriStar film has now grossed $30.9 million.

3. "Oz the Great and Powerful" moves down two spots in week three with $22 million. Disney's "Alice in Wonderland" performed similarly in week four at theaters back in 2010. "Oz" is performing just as well overseas as it is at home, earning $356.4 million worldwide.

2. "Olympus Has Fallen" has secured director Anton Fuqua's largest opening yet with $30.5 million. Fuqua previously made "Training Day" which debuted at $22.6 million. After two romance flops in 2012, the Gerard Butler White House action thriller solidifies the actor's genre in theaters.

1. DreamWorks Animation's "The Croods" managed to bring in $44.7 million to take the box office this weekend. The film's performance all but proved that the studio's last film, "The Rise of the Guardians" low gross was an anomaly. "The Croods" earnings came in slightly higher than 2010's March hit "How to Train Your Dragon" ($46 million) and just under "Megamind" ($46 million).

The IRS Is Getting Blasted For Making An Awful, $60,000 'Star Trek' Parody Video

The IRS is under fire for a six-minute "Star Trek" parody video it produced for the opening of a 2010 training and leadership conference.

CBS News, which obtained the video under a Freedom of Information Act request, reported that the "Star Trek" parody and another training video parodying "Gilligan's Island" together cost about $60,000.

IRS Acting Commissioner Steven Miller defended the videos, saying they save the IRS $1.5 million each year in in-person training costs. But the IRS also released a statement to CBS, saying that the video would not be something the agency would produce today.

"The space parody video from 2010 is not reflective of overall IRS video efforts, which provide critical information to taxpayers and cost-effective employee training critical to running the nation's tax system. In addition, the IRS has instituted tough new standards for videos to prevent situations similar to the 2010 video," the IRS' statement reads.

The video features an elaborate recreation of "Star Trek" themes and characters, including an employee playing Mr. Spock who is adorned with fake hair and large ears.

Rep. Charles Boustany, Jr. (R-La.), the chair of the House Ways and Means Committee, had requested the video, which the IRS originally refused to turn over. In a statement, Boustany blasted the IRS for a "frivolous" use of taxpayer dollars.

"There is nothing more infuriating to a taxpayer than to find out the government is using their hard-earned dollars in a way that is frivolous," Boustany said. "The IRS admitted as much when it disclosed that it no longer produces such videos."

J.J. Abrams Says He Has No Idea What He's Doing With 'Star Wars'

Kathleen Kennedy JJ Abrams

With three new "Star Wars" in the works, we've heard plenty of casting rumors — from Carrie Fisher's jokes to the return of Harrison Ford, but we haven't heard nearly as much about the plot of the film.

That's probably because director J.J. Abrams isn't sure what direction the new trilogy is taking just yet.

In an interview with Empire magazine, Abrams admitted he's not sure how he's approaching the film, comparing his work on the next "Star Wars" to his "Star Trek" series.

“I don’t know because we’re just getting started," said Abrams. "So it’s a great question that I hope I’ll have a good answer to when I know what the answer is. There are infinitely more questions than answers right now, but to me, they’re ["Star Wars"/"Star Trek"] not that dissimilar."

But in George Lucas' recent interview with Bloomberg Businessweek, he revealed he was already working on treatments for episodes VII, VIII, and IX which he then handed over to Disney as part of its $4 billion acquisition of Lucasfilm. So, we doubt Abrams has no idea as to where episode VII is heading.

Sounds like Abrams is just doing what he does best — staying secretiveabout his projects.

But now, the 17-year-old celebuspawn is breaking out of her famous parents' spotlight and making a name on her own.

Will Smith Wild Wild West

There's a really good reason Will Smith turned down the role that eventually went to Jamie Foxx in "Django Unchained."

Smith told Entertainment Weekly he didn't return to the West in The Weinstein Company's film because he didn't want to play second fiddle to Oscar winner Christoph Waltz.

“Django wasn’t the lead, so it was like, I need to be the lead," said Smith. "The other character was the lead!"

Earlier, the actor told Empire magazine he had a scheduling conflict with "Men in Black III" that would refrain from taking the role.

Smith was director Quentin Tarantino's first choice for Django.

Ann Curry Got Pranked And Teased By The 'Today' Show Crew

$
0
0

Ann Curry Matt LauerIn his new cover story for New York magazine, Joe Hagan offers the most in-depth look at the Today show ratings disaster that has created Matt Lauer's weeks-long attempt at image rehabilitation, and it's now clear that the defining moment that brought the morning show crashing down to Earth — the exit of Ann Curry— was something of a cross between the fourth circle of Hell and running with the Heathers in high school: Curry got pranked, she got her clothes made fun of, she was prevented from reaching out to Robin Roberts, and her legacy lives on as a punching bag for NBC to defend the man who couldn't share camera time with her anymore.

For the past several weeks, we've seen Lauer, Camp Lauer, and NBC executives trip over themselves trying to figure out how to talk to the media and spin the official history of Curry's demise as a refresh for Today and especially Lauer. Talk to the Daily Beast's Howard Kurtz, and you can come away with a glossy, press release masquerading as an "exclusive." Don't talk to The New York Times's Brian Stelter, or you'll find out Lauer is basically Voldemort in the halls of NBC.

Which brings us to New York's Hagan, who goes more than 6,500 words deep, with the official blessing of NBC... but also a blessed bit of honest analysis and reporting. On the surface, you can see Lauer and executives stick to the tracings of the NBC script so far — that Curry's exit wasn't his fault, that NBC executives made the decision, that Lauer was just caught in the crossfire. But Hagan's piece digs into the deeper reality that Lauer in some respects failed at the basics of his job, and that those failures slid past executives who were so quick to lower the axe on Curry.

Here are some highlights that reveal the state of Today today:

The Today crew liked to make fun of Ann Curry. Even when Curry took a fake photoshoot a little too seriously, she got teased — and her only high-profile friend and comforter, just like for many in high school, was the kid who pooped his pants:

She was considered intensely earnest and somewhat fragile, despite her hard-news chops. In the past, Couric would sometimes tease her about her clothes, remarks that Curry took badly. When Lauer and Today producers tried to “punk” the rest of the cast one morning in 2011 — sending them to a fake magazine photo shoot where the photographer had a meltdown and started firing all his assistants — Curry was infuriated with Lauer and retreated to her dressing room. Roker, her longtime friend, was sent to comfort her.

The Today show didn't let Ann Curry send a "get well" tweet to Robin Roberts. Social media guidelines at NBC are strange — you can't send your best wishes to your competition, even if she's suffering from a cancer-like blood disease:

When Robin Roberts left Good Morning America a month later to get treatment for MDS, Curry asked NBC if she could tweet a note of sympathy for the ABC co-host. NBC said no, afraid she was trying to aid the enemy.

Matt Lauer didn't get along with Ann Curry on camera... The $25 million man works four days a week to pretend he's interested in making salmon and updating spring wardrobes. And it became increasingly evident that he couldn't do that alongside his co-host. Hagan says that came through everywhere: "But, more important, Lauer looked awkward and unhappy next to her—a situation that Lauer himself had also diagnosed. He openly complained about her to NBC staffers and to [former executive producer Jim] Bell." The man paid millions not to pout was basically pouting.

...and America knew it. If Lauer were a designer on Project Runway, or any human at any normal human job, Tim Gunn or his supervisor would have told him to suck it up. America, according to internal NBC data, was telling him to suck it up. But NBC, it appears, was afraid to tell him. Hagan writes:

But internal research conducted by a company called SmithGeiger showed something different: When Lauer was onscreen with Curry, it was Lauer who became less appealing to viewers, not Curry. “He was looking aloof, a little bit holier-than-thou, and pompous,” says a former NBC executive who viewed the reports.

Matt Lauer could have been a martyr with a cyanide pill. Perhaps the most masterful storytelling — and certainly the most talked about tidbit — in the long read on the Today show is Hagan's tale of a Lauer exit that never materialized. Hagan explains that there were insurance plans that involved Ryan Seacrest and Lauer fleeing to ABC, except Lauer "came back" to NBC to selflessly "save" Today:

Lauer has said he remained to help shepherd Today through a tough period, because he cared about the show and the staff—but this act of selflessness was rewarded with a fairly hefty check.

[...]

Lauer says Curry’s name never came up in his contract talks. (Burke declined to comment.) But her fate was already sealed. From top to bottom, Burke, Lauer, Capus, and Bell had all agreed that Curry would be taken off the show, with Today rebuilt around Lauer.

And that brings us to Curry's exit. She apparently told executives ahead of time about her plans to go ahead with what became a teary goodbye message. Lauer apparently got word of Curry's plans and responded, well, like only Matt Lauer would respond:

So when am I taking my cyanide pill tomorrow?
