Everything You Need To Know About Oscar's Best Picture Nominees

les miserables anne hathaway

It's been a long time since the Oscar race for Best Picture has been this tight.

Director Tom Hooper is coming off of his 2011 win for "The King's Speech" with "Les Mis," while Kathryn Bigelow is looking for another Academy Award after "The Hurt Locker" in 2008.

Then there's Steven Spielberg's "Lincoln" and Ben Affleck's awards-sweeping "Argo." However, after foreign film "The Artist" won the top award last year, "Amour" could swoop in and take the trophy.

We've gathered together all the best picture nominations to help in selecting the winning pick on your Oscar ballot.

Familiarize yourself with the nominations, and see which one is most likely to take home the Oscar prize Sunday night.

"Les Miserables"

The musical

Anne Hathaway had us mesmerized with her flawless rendition of "I Dreamed a Dreamand even went the extra mile by shaving off all of her hair for the film (something director Tom Hooper didn't even ask her to do).

However, no matter how much Hugh Jackman brought the story to life every time he appeared on screen, the adaptation of the hit Broadway play was bogged down by Russell Crowe's vocals—bringing to mind Pierce Brosnan's singing in "Mamma Mia"—and a lengthy script that clocked in at more than two-and-a-half hours on screen.

WINS:  Golden Globe for Best Musical or Comedy and Best Ensemble at both the Satellite Awards and WAFCA Awards

Nominated for 8 Oscars.

"Amour"

The traditional foreign film

Though many weren't familiar with "Amour" when it was nominated, the French film has a story that can resonate with most anyone.

Emmanuelle Riva plays an 80-year old woman, Anne, whose health continues to decline after she's left paralyzed. This leaves her husband Georges (Jean-Louis Trintignant) with the difficult decision of how to handle his wife's illness.

WINSEuropean Film Award and NSFC for Best Film, BAFTA, Critics Choice Award, and Golden Globe for Foreign language film

Nominated for 5 Oscars.

"Silver Linings Playbook"

The Cinderella Darling

The film following a mental home outpatient and his road back to normalcy unexpectedly became a big winner for The Weinstein Company.

The chemistry between Bradley Cooper and Jennifer Lawrence is undeniably electrifying every time the two are on screen together.

What's most impressive about the estimated $21 million budget film is its A-list star power and its ability to perform by word of mouth.

Not only did Weinstein manage to pool together Robert DeNiro, Jacki Weaver, Julia Stiles, and long-gone actor Chris Tucker, but the film also resonated with audiences. In its first eight weeks, the film earned close to $35 million airing in only 745 theaters before receiving Oscar nods.

WINSBest Ensemble at the Critics Choice Award

Nominated for 8 Oscars.

How Alex Day Became The Biggest Unsigned Singer In The World, Without Touring

alex day

Alex Day might just be the most famous musician you've never heard of.

Finding loads of success through his YouTube channel, the U.K. native holds the Guinness World Record for the highest-charting single by an unsigned artist for his song "Forever Yours," which peaked at #2 on the UK Indie charts.

Day makes his full-time living as a musician and he does so without touring. He obviously has some unique ideas on what it means to be a musician and how to best participate (or not participate) in today's music industry.

He was kind enough to share some of his thoughts with us below.

BUSINESS INSIDER: First off, what can you share about yourself, your background, your music, and the like?

ALEX DAY: I've been writing music for 10 years, recording/releasing it for nearly five and producing my own songs for a year and a half. I never studied music at school because it always felt very private to me and I felt like I'd ruin it if I did it in front of other people. Where other people do gigs in their local area to build a following, I made YouTube videos to get the word out on my music and myself and I built up a huge audience of over 600,000 people around the world.

BI: You literally hold a world record for the highest charting single by an unsigned artist. How did you do this?

AD: All from my YouTube audience! I had zero PR, no record label, no management, no radio support. But I've been honest with my audience about who I am, I don't always talk about music because music isn't my whole life (and isn't it awful when you chat to someone and all they are is their job?) - so when it came time to share a dream I've always had like getting into the UK Top 5, thankfully people supported me and supported the song.

BI: Are you doing anything that other musicians couldn't do?

AD: Not at all, in fact I'm actually not doing a lot of things regular musicians do. I don't play gigs, for example, because the joy I get out of making music is in being in the studio, playing every instrument, stitching it all together and then presenting it online with a music video. That's how I prefer my music to be heard and shared. I also don't do regular covers on YouTube. Most of the artists I've seen with an online video presence just do covers of the latest pop tracks every week, or upload live stuff, and the only time they stop to talk to their audience is to talk about upcoming tours (which, being the internet, most people won't be able to go to). I just find it very-samey and bland, nobody stands out, you're never really excited about watching what they upload next. The things I say to my audience are the same things I'll tell friends - funny stories, interesting things that have happened recently, just letting people in on your life a bit so people don't just have the music to go on.

BI: Have you been offered contracts before?

AD: Yeah, I've had meetings with every major label in the UK now but they couldn't offer me anything I couldn't do myself, which is a shame – at least not without serious downsides. I'd love to have my songs on radio but not if it means having a VEVO channel to funnel views away from my online home to some random place with an advert of Rihanna next to it. Rihanna's great but I don't know why all those VEVO artists agree to have adverts for other acts on their stuff, I'd hate that. I also rather enjoy keeping all the money I make, so it'd take a pretty great deal for me to wanna give that up.

Labels have also made it very clear that they want "albums, not singles," which I think is ridiculous, because I can't remember the last time I listened to an album as they're mostly filler. I think there's definitely a place for albums in the music market but they should never be the front focus unless it's a concept album or a soundtrack. I'm always thinking only as far as the next single, what I want the video for it to be, how to promote it etc.

BI: What would signing with a label offer you that you can't do by yourself?

AD: In theory: they'd be able to get my songs on radio, they could get press people interested so the tracks would permeate the mainstream, my songs and music videos would win awards, I'd reach the rare level of success that straddles commercial popularity with critical acclaim selling millions of my songs and ultimately I could wake up every morning with a smile of pride on my face looking at a shiny metal disc hanging on the wall of a house I've paid for outright.

BI: Are those advantages enough to make you want to go with a label?

AD: No, because none of those things will actually happen. Major labels will often sign artists simply to stop other labels signing them. They start asking for royalties on your music before they've even done anything for you. Unless you're made a priority act you'll sit around not being able to do anything with them, but you won't be able to do anything without them either, so it's likely you'll be completely stifled (and certainly moreso than if you stayed on your own).

Labels think they know better than you what your musical direction should be. They're seldom interested in covers, because they can't earn off your publishing rights on songs you didn't write yourself, so they discourage you from doing that even if you want to. They don't understand the online world at all – a label guy recently said to me that he thinks I'm good at "the online stuff" but not the "real-world stuff, as if people on the internet exist in their own dimension! – continuing that "there's no proof those people will walk into a store and buy your record just because they've clicked a button on a computer," which is as outdated as it is insulting to the people that support me.

If there's a label that exists that doesn't do or think any of those things and offered me a good deal, I'd consider it, but in my experience there isn't. There are those rare circumstances when – label or not – a song or a video absolutely blows up, but that seems to happen regardless of label input so I figure if we're waiting for anomalies I'll take my chances on my own where I can at least have a say in how I go about things without answering to anyone who doesn't know what they're doing.

BI: How much of your sales are physical media vs. digital downloads?

AD: I sell physical stuff online through a mail-order distribution company called DFTBA that takes care of online musicians. Looking at the whole of 2012: physically I sold 791 CDs through the whole year for a total of $10,852. If you include other merch – wristband, posters, t-shirts etc – the number jumps to 6,210 items sold and a total income of $96,707.

Digitally, I sold 293,760 digital downloads of songs on iTunes, making me $246,340.95. So clearly the money's in the iTunes single downloads, but the merch makes a nice extra amount.

Bonus fact: my songs were streamed 632,318 times, making me $2,782.11, but that figure doesn't include YouTube music video views which would bring the total play count to over ten million and the earnings substantially higher.

BI: Is it silly for musicians starting out today to want to produce physical media?

AD: Not at all, but I don't think it should be the driving force. Physical media, digital media; it's all just distribution. Musicians starting out today should want to produce music – how it gets to people really shouldn't matter very much. That said, I like creating nice physical products for people and I think they do offer some nice value, particularly for gifting. Louis CK is amazing for releasing his Beacon Theater show on his site for five bucks but I can't buy a DVD of that show for my aunt when it's her birthday and it's a lot less meaningful a gift to slip her five dollars and tell her to download a video. In any case, I think there will be a time where digital distribution is the major method and we won't need CDs or DVDs, but it's technology that will drive that change forward, not media creators.

BI: What's the future of the music industry look like?

AD: Probably much the same as it looks now. There will be huge corporations funneling mass amounts of money into boring acts and most of them will fail and a few will do really well, but the difference is I think in the future they'll go ignored because they're not doing anything new. For people to be excited about music, they HAVE to be looking at the internet, at new unsigned talent, at people making their own rules. I mainly hope more people will be going the route I've gone of doing everything myself.

The Beatles popularized the idea of playing your own instruments as well as performing, and I'd love the chance to do the same for music production and music video creation. To be able to write a song, record it, perform it, play every instrument on the track, put it all together, design the artwork, submit it to iTunes, plan the music video, film it, edit it, reply to comments when it goes live, send it to DJs in the hope they pick up on it...it means you get to infuse every aspect of how your music is represented with the same uniqueness you bring to the music itself and when it works it's the most satisfying feeling in the world because you know you're the one who got you there.

Nobody is gonna care about your art as much as you do so you might as well be your own head cheerleader.

Everyone on Wall Street is talking about Nico Jackson, a tall, blue-eyed Deutsche Bank stockbroker.

That's because he's dating Pippa Middleton, according to multiple press reports.

She recently took him on vacation to Mustique, a small private island, to meet her parents and pregnant sister Kate, the Duchess of Cambridge, according to the Daily Mail.

Jackson, 35, works at Deutsche Bank in London.

He doesn't come from the highest social class either. He grew up in Folkestone, Kent, attended non-elite schools and his father owns a ski shop, according to the Daily Mail.

Middleton ended things with her financier beau Alex Loudon back in 2011.

Since that relationship ended, she has been spotted with Thomas Kingston, who works at Schroders private bank, and James Spencer Matthews, the CEO of Eden Rock Capital Management.

Leonardo DiCaprio Made This Really Strange Whiskey Ad In Japan

Leonardo DiCaprio might be one of Hollywood's highest paid actors — actually the highest paid actor in 2011— but that doesn't stop the Oscar-nominated star from jumping in a plane to Asia to film silly ads for large paychecks.

Even though it won't be released in America, the Internet got a hold of DiCaprio's new ad for Jim Beam. After he molds ice into a ball and then crumbles it through telekinesis, DiCaprio says "Cool bourbon" over a video game-like soundtrack.

Usually stars like to keep these spots out of the public eye — DiCaprio even filed a cease and desist order against Japander.com to take down an Asian ad he starred in — but you can watch DiCaprio's spot below:

James Brown Love Some Miso Soup-ah

This vintage ad shows the one, the only James Brown singing about Cup of Noodles... to the tune of "Sex Machine"... in Japanese.

Good Gawd!

Check out the video below to see a sparkly, blue suit wearing Brown cha-cha around some good old fashion ramen.

Watch the ad below:

Hulk Hogan Singing... With A Baby... And An Air Conditioner?

Wow. Hulk Hogan was singing about the days of the week decades before Rebecca Black made it cool.

This ad from the early 1990s is comprised of Hogan reciting the days of the week, followed by a close up of a baby, followed by a close up on an air conditioner.

Whatever Hitachi paid the wrestler to do this ad, it couldn't have been enough.

Watch the ad below:

Thai Tina Turner, Michael Jackson And More

This ad features Thai versions of Tina Turner, Stevie Wonder, Madonna, and Michael Jackson. Want to know what they're crooning about?

According to Vintage Asian, which has a hilarious collection of retro ads from Asia, the impersonators are promoting an apartment building located at the northern outskirts of Bangkok.

Apparently, Flat Pla Tong -- translating to Goldfish Flats -- has great public bus access and only requires a small down payment! Huzzah! (Watch the ad below):

3 Things Sony Needs To Do This Week To Reclaim The Gaming Throne From Microsoft

sony PlayStation 4 prototype controller

Earlier this month, Sony revealed a mysterious video hinting at a big announcement to come Wednesday about the "Future of Playstation" from a press meetup in New York City.

Nearly everyone expects the announcement to be the long-awaited reveal of the company's next game console, the "Playstation 4.

We spoke with IGNPlayStation Executive Editor Greg Miller who tells Business Insider this random meetup in New York is totally out of character for the company.

For that reason, he's also convinced it's most likely going to be the reveal of its next system.

However, Miller predicts Sony's meeting won't solely be about the expected PlayStation console.

Rather, after a rough year in 2012 — lossesin themillions and a reported 10,000 layoffs — its conference will be a look at what's in store for the company this year and the brand's future, with a look at game titles and possibly a new DualShock controller.

This week will be Sony's first big opportunity since the unveiling of the Playstation 3 more than six years ago, to go toe-to-toe with Microsoft's competing Xbox system again.

"Microsoft destroyed Sony in its last generation because they were out first — and they were out first for an entire year. Sony came in off the PS2 [acting] like 'we don't have to worry about this. You're going to buy [the PS3] no matter what.'"

That's not what happened at all.

Sony released the PS3 in November 2006 for $499 and $599, and many didn't want to shell out that sort of money for a game system. Regardless of brand loyalty, there were two more affordable game systems on the market, and that worked greatly against Sony and in Microsoft's favor.

"Microsoft got to come out with a system that, for all intents and purposes, didn't work that well — Xbox's red rings. They overheated, they died," says Miller. "All this bad publicity should have destroyed them, when instead they were running against a console that came out a year later and it was $600. And, the people behind [the PS3] were cocky enough to tell you that you needed a second job for it."

Though some still found the PlayStation console reigning supreme, Sony's system basically toppled from the top of the gaming tower.

The Xbox 360 has been the top-selling game console for 25 consecutive months. Last week, Microsoft released stats saying its Xbox 360 console has sold more than 76 million units compared to the PS3's 70 million as of last November.

Miller tells Business Insider that, right now, it's an arms race between Microsoft and Sony to get their products out before each other. If Sony wants to regain its status as the go-to gaming console, it will have to do a few key things at its conference this week.

Playstation 31. Show off the PS4
This is a no-brainer. There's really no alternative here for Sony. The company has to reveal a console if they want to keep up with the world of next-gen consoles, or it's bust for them.

2. Admit its mistakes

Miller says Sony needs to own up to the fact that it slipped after the PS2.

"This is a chance for Sony to come out on February 20th and say, 'We learned from our mistakes, this is our machine, this is why you want it,' and then wait to see what Microsoft's response is," Miller tells Business Insider. "Sony's really good about admitting mistakes. And, they've kind of done it a lot with the Sony network packet in recent years."

3. Say it's a system for gamers

"The way Sony wins is to come out and say, 'We are the console for gamers, and here's why,' says Miller. 'We want you to have games that transform, intense narratives, the best action, and the best graphics wherever you are because that's what gamers play.'"

"It's a huge gamble because obviously we saw that when the Wii hit, Microsoft and Sony spent a year — Microsoft making Kinect, Sony making Playstation Move — to come out and say, 'Hey casual gamers, we want you.' But, they overlooked the fact that these systems are complicated."

playstation 3 grand theft auto

4. (Maybe)Surprise the crowd

Miller tells Business Insider if Sony really wants to make a splash, it will get Bungie, the creators of Microsoft's successful "Halo" franchise, to come out and present its next big video game, "Destiny."

"If Sony can get the Bungie guys there, that makes the kind of headlines you want," says Miller. "That would be huge. People will flip out."

Halo-4

Since speaking with Miller, that last option seems unlikely considering Bungie has since announced "Destiny"

Miller warns the one thing Sony shouldn't do Wednesday is come out and try to pitch its console as an entertainment hub — that's an area where Microsoft already excels. Instead, Sony needs to separate itself and stand apart.

"That doesn't work. Right now, everyone thinks of Xbox as the entertainment hub. Everybody who already has Xbox already has all the apps and ESPN. They think to go there for that," Miller tells Business Insider. "The way Sony wins is to come out and say, 'We are the system for gamers.'"

What we won't see at the conference from Sony:

A price
Miller says if Sony throws out a price of $400 or $500 then that's what media will get hung up on and will detract from the spotlight of the console.

A release date
Again, it's the same thing with the media getting caught up in a number.

"Right now, they get to own the conversation for probably a month," says Miller. "Everybody I hear talk about the next Xbox said that Microsoft won't be out of the gate talking about it until March. So, Sony gets to have pretty much — if they don't screw up — nothing but positive press."

You can watch Miller and his Beyond! crew over at IGN hash out more predictions for Wednesday's conference below.

Essentially, they believe it will be a short conference where Sony will unveil the new gaming system, potentially show off an updated Dualshock controller, and reveal a few new game titles.

Pamela Anderson has been plagued by rumors of money troubles lately.

In December of last year, it was reported by TMZ that the Baywatch actress owed $371,514.65 in unpaid taxes to the IRS, and was over-spending on her home construction project to boot.

So it appears that to get back on financial track, the sex symbol is selling her Malibu Colony home. It was just listed for $7.75 million, according to real estate blog Trulia.

Anderson originally purchased the home back in 2000 for $1.8 million — that means if the price holds, the actress could be making a profit of $6 million to help with her financial woes.

The home was designed by architect Philip Vertoch in 1959, and decorated by Josh Chryssanthou and Pamela Anderson herself. It has five bedrooms, three bathrooms, and a pool.

natalie portman 2012 OscarsThe 85th Academy Awards will have plenty of stars, performances from Adele and Barbara Streisand, and 24 little golden envelopes delivering the night's Oscar trophies Sunday night.

The two dozen envelopes are made just for Hollywood's biggest evening; however, they're only used for a few minutes time on stage.

If you tune in Sunday night, all you'll see from television is the outside of a golden envelope and maybe a slight peek at the letter inside.

But, what are the stars looking at during the big reveal?

It's not just the winner's name inside.

The envelope and inside presenter card were simply cream up until three years ago when the Academy hired Marc Friedland, CEO of Couture Communications, to liven up the stationery.

Since then, the award has had a home inside a golden envelope.

Here's how we'll see the envelope Oscar night.

And here are what this year's 24 award envelopes will look like from celebrity presenters' points-of-view:

The old Oscar envelopes were a bland off-white as seen in this image from the 74th Academy Awards in 2002.

Schlepp Films went up to Harlem in NYC and asked a bunch of residents of Harlem what they thought of the meme. General consensus: they hate it. There's a real history to the dances that come out of Harlem and residents feel like this video is disrespecting Harlem and making a joke of them.

FILTER has shared a glimpse inside its 51st issue, along with a look at Yorke's cover for the magazine with Business Insider.

Inside, Yorke reveals how his new group, "Atoms for Peace" came together with R.E.M. drummer Joey Waronker and Red Hot Chili Peppers bassist Flea.

According to Yorke, the two expressed interest when the Radiohead artist released his debut solo album "The Eraser" in 2006.

“That got me thinking,” Yorke told FILTER Magazine. “I sent the e-mail around and said, ‘If they get back to me soon, then I’ll do it’… Flea and Joey got back to me within an hour. So it was on.”

The magazine's March issue will be Yorke's first on the cover.

Here's the full cover:

Roberts said Wednesday she'd been waiting 174 days "to say this, good morning America."

The morning-show host is recovering from MDS, a blood and bone marrow disease. She looked thin with close-cropped hair but was smiling broadly, back at work on "Good Morning America" at ABC's studio in New York.

Roberts was welcomed back in a taped message from President Barack Obama and his wife, Michelle, former ESPN colleagues and Magic Johnson.

ABC announced Roberts will interview the first lady later this week, to be shown next Tuesday.

ABC News President Ben Sherwood came into the studio to give fist bumps to the anchors at the 7:25 a.m. EST break. He said Roberts' health will be closely monitored to make sure she doesn't overdo it at the beginning.

"This was up to Robin, her doctors and God," Sherwood said. "It's a day that we all rejoice."

ABC didn't miss a beat with her absence, continuing in first place in the ratings after first overcoming NBC's "Today" show last spring. Sherwood said the success with Roberts' absence surprised him.

Tina Fey Oscar red carpet

On Sunday, millions of people will be watching as celebrities descend upon Hollywood Boulevard to walk the red carpet before heading into the Dolby Theater for the 85th annual Academy Awards.

We stopped by the Dolby Theater on Wednesday to get a better look at what exactly it takes to prepare for the most-watched red carpet event of the year.

While workmen are quickly trying to transform Los Angeles' Hollywood Boulevard into a red carpet area, the street is anything but glamorous before the Oscar's take it over.

This is what the red carpet looks like during arrivals for the Academy Awards.

But before Sunday's big show, the glamorous red carpet area is just a blocked off busy street in the middle of a touristy area in Hollywood.

To the right of the carpet, there is a Forever 21 clothing store and Johnny Depp look-a-like from "Pirates of the Caribbean."

girl with gun

Good morning, AdLand. Here's what you need to know today:

Comcast decided to adopt NBC Universal's advertising guidelines and has announced that it will no longer run gun ads. But according to an NBC spokesperson, this is longstanding policy — not a reaction to the current gun violence debate.

Facebook extended its Realtime Updates API to include page posts. Read more here.

Here's a lesson that the Catholic Church can learn from social media.

The Oscar ads are almost as big a deal to Madison Avenue as the Super Bowl.

Jim Marcus is no longer the SVP/director of communication innovation at DDB.

There are many speculations as to what Twitter's ad API will mean for how many ads appear on the social network.

Mimi Cook, most recently a brand strategy director at Mekanism with four years as a CD at Apple, is the new CCO at Y&R California. Mike Reese, who had the job, is now president.

Andy Peebler, who was recently the EVP of North American sales and business development at Acquity Group, is now the EVP of Global Sales at the eCommerce and digital marketing agency.
