Netflix just dropped a new season of its Canadian series 'Frontier,' starring 'Aquaman' and 'Game of Thrones' actor Jason Momoa

  • The third season of Netflix's Canadian drama series, "Frontier," starring Jason Momoa, debuted on Friday.
  • Netflix acquired the global rights to the series in 2016.
  • It was originally commissioned as Discovery Canada's first original scripted series.

A significant aspect of Netflix's strategy is acquiring TV shows outside of the US and introducing them to a worldwide audience. Some prime examples are British series "Bodyguard" and "The End of the F---ing World," which debuted on the streaming giant this year outside of the UK.

But it's not only British shows that Netflix is investing in. Netflix acquired the exclusive global rights to Canada's period drama, "Frontier," in 2016, according to Deadline. The show stars "Aquaman" and "Game of Thrones" actor Jason Momoa as half-Irish, half-Native American violent fur trader Declan Harp.

The six-episode third season dropped on the platform Friday. Netflix describes the series like this: "In 18th-century North America, ruthless trappers and entrepreneurs fight to wrest control of the fur trade from the mighty Hudson's Bay Company."

"Frontier" was commissioned as Discovery Canada's first scripted TV series in 2016. It debuted on the network, then, before being streamed outside of Canada by Netflix, according to Deadline. The third season will air on Discovery Canada in December.

The strategy benefits both Netflix and the series' original home, as Netflix adds more subscribers and the show gains a bigger audience. The strategy has benefited other series like British "The Last Kingdom" — a Viking drama which also premiered its third season this week and has become a global hit.

narcos mexico

  • This week's most in-demand streaming shows include Netflix's "Narcos: Mexico" and "Chilling Adventures of Sabrina."
  • "Big Mouth" returned to the list this week after a brief hiatus.

"Narcos" is gaining momentum with audiences with a new iteration of the Netflix crime drama, "Narcos: Mexico," which premiered earlier this month.

Every week, Parrot Analytics provides Business Insider with a list of the five most "in-demand" TV shows on streaming services. The data is based on "demand expressions," the globally standardized TV demand measurement unit from Parrot Analytics. Audience demand reflects the desire, engagement, and viewership weighted by importance, so a stream or download is a higher expression of demand than a "like" or comment on social media.

This week's most in-demand shows also include Netflix's "Chilling Adventures of Sabrina" (which remains at the top for the third week), Marvel's "Daredevil," and "Big Mouth," which returns to the list after a brief hiatus, knocking "House of Cards" off the list.

Below are this week's five most popular shows on Netflix and other streaming services:

  • Netflix's library of original content is continually expanding at a rapid pace.
  • Here, we rank all of Netflix's notable original shows by their critical reception on Rotten Tomatoes.

As Netflix's library of original content continues to expand, it's worthwhile to take stock of all that the service currently offers.

With popular shows like "Stranger Things" and "Big Mouth," Netflix has hit the mark with both critics and audiences.

But the service has also had its share of critical flops, including the Marvel series "Iron Fist" and the high school dramedy "Insatiable."

To figure out which Netflix original series are worth your time, we turned to the reviews aggregator Rotten Tomatoes to rank the shows by their composite critical reception.

We excluded any show that did not have enough reviews to receive a designation of "Fresh" or "Rotten." We also did not include children's shows, talk shows, docuseries, or shows that were continued from other networks, and we used audience scores to break any ties.

Here are 82 of Netflix's notable original shows, ranked from worst to best, according to critics:

Disney's 'Ralph Breaks the Internet' feeds on the Thanksgiving weekend box office, taking in $84.5 million (DIS)

ralph breaks the internet princesses

  • "Ralph Breaks the Internet," Disney's sequel to "Wreck-It Ralph," wins the long Thanksgiving holiday weekend box office with an estimated $84.5 million.
  • That's the second-best opening ever for a movie over the 5-day Thanksgiving weekend, topping fellow Disney hit "Moana" ($82 million).
  • "Creed II" also earned some major coin, netting $55 million over the weekend.
  • It's the biggest opening ever for a live-action movie.

Six years after "Wreck-It Ralph," Disney's sequel "Ralph Breaks the Internet" had no trouble being a major winner at the domestic box office.

The movie took in an estimated $84.5 million over the long Thanksgiving holiday weekend (Wednesday-Sunday). That's the second-best opening ever over that holiday stretch, with fellow Disney title "Frozen" still at the top of the heap with a $93.5 million 5-day opening.

Though "Ralph Breaks the Internet" didn't make the top all-time spot, it took down some impressive titles, besting "Moana" ($82 million), "Toy Story 2" ($80.1 million), and "Coco" ($72.9 million).

Yes, those are all Disney titles, too. In fact, eight out of the top 10 biggest Thanksgiving holiday weekend earners (5-day total) are all from the house that Mickey built.

But picking up steam to become another Thanksgiving moviegoing tradition is the "Creed" franchise.

MGM teamed with Warner Bros. for 2015's "Creed" — Ryan Coogler's reboot of the "Rocky" franchise that moved the focus to Adonis Creed, son of Apollo Creed — and had a critical and box office success taking in $42.1 million over the 5-day Thanksgiving day weekend.

MGM went it alone for the sequel, "Creed II," taken over by director Steven Caple Jr., and topped the first in a big way. The movie earned $55 million, the biggest take ever for a live-action movie over the holiday weekend, passing 2007's $49 million for "Enchanted" (yep, a Disney movie).

We could be looking at a healthy rivalry between Disney and Adonis Creed over Turkey Day for years to come.

The 50 best-selling music artists of all time, ranked by platinum albums

  • In today's music industry, the RIAA certifies an album as "platinum" when it surpasses 1 million album equivalent units in sales or streaming.
  • Here, we rank the best-selling artists of all time by their number of platinum album certifications.

In the decades before streaming-era rules and digital downloads inflated album sales, platinum certification was more difficult for artists to obtain.

When an artist achieved platinum status back then — selling a million or more physical copies of an album — it took a more fervent effort from fans (who had to drive to record stores, find an album, and hand over their hard-earned cash for it), but many acts nonetheless reached platinum certification routinely.

Compiling RIAA data, we ranked the best-selling artists of all time by the number of platinum albums they've sold in the US.

Some of the results here are surprising. Country singer Garth Brooks, for instance, has the most diamond (or 10-times platinum) albums of all time with seven. But the legendary acts at the top of the list are ones you'd expect to see.

Here are the 50 best-selling artists of all time, ranked by platinum albums sold:

The new 'Robin Hood' movie is officially the biggest box-office bomb of the year

  • The new "Robin Hood" movie made just $14 million over the five-day holiday weekend at the box office.
  • It's the biggest bomb of 2018 for a movie with a budget over $90 million.
  • The movie faced tough competition, but it's also another example of audiences not caring about the medieval "Robin Hood" or "King Arthur" brands.

Hollywood loves "Robin Hood," but the latest take on the classic tale may force some reconsideration.

Lionsgate's "Robin Hood," starring Taron Egerton and Jamie Foxx, struggled during the competitive Thanksgiving weekend at the box office. "Robin Hood" is the biggest bomb among movies with a budget over $90 million in 2018, according to The Wrap. The film had a Friday to Sunday take of only $9 million and made $14 million over the five-day holiday weekend at the box office.

Read more: Hollywood is obsessed with making Robin Hood and King Arthur movies, despite a run of box-office and critical disasters

Globally, the movie made just $22 million. Its production budget was $100 million. The movie faced tough competition as the popular sequels "Ralph Breaks the Internet" and "Creed II" also debuted last week. Additionally, the movies "Bohemian Rhapsody," "Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald," and "The Grinch" are still holding steady.

But even if there weren't so many other options in theaters, the "Robin Hood" brand isn't exactly lucrative. The last attempt, Ridley Scott's 2010 "Robin Hood" starring Russell Crowe, fared better with $321 million in worldwide box-office sales, but audiences weren't clamoring for another reboot.

This year's "Robin Hood" also followed in the footsteps of last year's "King Arthur: Legend of the Sword," which retold an overused medieval tale. That movie made $15 million in its opening weekend and went on to gross only $148 million worldwide against its $175 million budget.

Sony is developing a Robin Hood movie of its own, this time focused on the love interest Marian, played by Margot Robbie. But details have been scarce, and now may be a good time to sweep that idea under the rug.

There's one thing every parent should do before gifting a video game console

nintendo 64 christmas morning video freakout

  • It's a great year to buy a video game console, with prices lower than ever and killer deals.
  • Before giving your loved one a game console this holiday, there's one crucial thing you should do: Connect it to the internet and update it!
  • Here's why — and how — to update each of the big three video game consoles.

It's Christmas Day and you're the nicest person: You splurged on an expensive video game console as a gift.

As you sip on a hot cup of coffee, your loved one rips open the box and their face lights up with joy. A new game console! Everyone's very excited.

Unfortunately, that excitement quickly fades as the setup process begins:

  1. First, there's the joy of unpacking the box. Look at all this shiny new stuff!
  2. Then there's the process of hooking up the game console to your TV. Less fun maybe, but a necessary step on the way to new video games!
  3. And finally, the console is hooked up. Time to play some new video games! Right? Right?! Nuh uh.

It's 2018, so it's actually time to update your system with the latest firmware.

Xbox One firmware update

And then video games, right?

Nope! You'll need to install each game individually if you bought them on disc, and then they'll almost certainly require some form of downloaded update.

And then video games? Maybe? Please?

Maybe, if you don't have to update the software that runs your gamepad. On Xbox One controllers from before June 2015, that process requires plugging in each controller individually and updating it. Seriously! If it's from after June 2015, it may still need an update — but you can do it wirelessly, at least.

(NOTE: Follow Microsoft's instructions right here for how to update your gamepad.)

Long gone are the days of plug-and-play game consoles.

Nintendo Switch (software update)

Even Nintendo's latest console, the Switch, requires an update when you first hook it up.

The processes vary a bit from Xbox One to PlayStation 4 to Switch, but they're all essentially forcing you to do the same thing: Plug in your system and download software from the internet that enables the game console to do basically anything, from play games to watch Netflix.

And that's why you, intrepid gift giver, should go above and beyond and set up that console with new firmware before gifting it.

This is blessedly simple across all three game consoles: simply plug the system in as if it were yours and follow setup instructions. The consoles are all designed to be straightforward and simple to setup.

In case this is your first time, here are explicit instructions from each console maker directly:

You may have to create a temporary login, but they're easily deletable; the person who gets the game console will thank you. Or maybe they won't! But at very least you'll feel pretty good when they can simply turn the system on and enjoy it for what it is — a game console — rather than what it isn't: an expensive paperweight that needs an hour or more to talk to the internet before it can do anything.

Happy holidays!

More than 500,000 people downloaded games on the Google Play Store that were infected with nasty malware — here are the 13 apps affected (GOOG, GOOGL)

$

pixel 3 xl google play store

  • Google has removed several games from its Play Store for containing malware.
  • The games, which were all driving simulators, required users to download an extra app that could then gain full network access to a user's device.
  • If you've downloaded one of the apps, your best bet is to factory reset your device after backing up your photos, text messages, and anything else you want to keep.

Several games in the Google Play Store have been removed by Google for containing malware — software that can potentially harm your device, access sensitive information, or show ads continuously while you're using a device.

Security researcher Lukas Stefanko from digital security company ESET discovered that the games contained malware and posted their titles on Twitter. A total of 13 games were removed, all from the same developer — Luiz O Pinto.

All the games are driving simulators with different themes, like luxury car racing or firefighter truck driving. But none of the games would work, according to Stefanko. After installing, the game supposedly asked the user to download an extra item called "Game Center." When a user would try opening the game, it would close itself almost immediately, and the game's icon would become hidden.

This extra item — Game Center — would then gain full network access to a user's device and display ads when the device was unlocked, according to Stefankos. It could also potentially record network traffic going in and out of devices.

Two of the apps were trending on Google's Play Store, which makes them easier to find than non-trending apps, and therefore more likely to be installed. Stefanko estimates that the games were installed over 560,000 times from Google's Play Store.

It's a mystery as to how two of the games were trending in the Google Play Store when they didn't work. But it's not the first time that apps have been removed from Google's Play Store for containing malware, and it could erode the trust Android users have in the Play Store, especially for smaller app developers who are relatively unknown.

Here's Google's comment on the latest malware-infected apps it recommended on its own app store: “Providing a safe and secure experience for our users is our top priority. We appreciate the researcher’s report and their efforts to help make Google Play more secure. The apps violated our policies and have been removed from the Play Store.”

It's not a satisfactory response, in my opinion. If a safe and secure experience is a top priority, surely a malware-infected app wouldn't be trending on the Google Play Store.

If you've downloaded one of the apps below, your best bet is to factory reset your device after backing up your photos, text messages, and anything else you want to keep. If that's too drastic, you could try uninstalling the offending app and downloading an anti-malware app, like Malwarebytes, to get rid of the malware.

Some legitimate games — or at least we think they're legitimate — have similar titles and images. You should look out for any app published by "Luiz O Pinto."

Check out the 13 games that were removed from the Google Play Store for containing malware:

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are moving out of their London palace home — here are the 13 other royals they leave behind

kensington palace 2x1

  • Kensington Palace, next to London's Hyde Park, is currently home to 15 high-ranking royals.
  • But Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are moving out in early 2019 in preparation of the birth of their first child.
  • The Duke and Duchess of Sussex will be moving to Frogmore Cottage, in the grounds of Windsor Castle.
  • They had been living in a cottage on the palace grounds, where Harry first proposed.
  • Prince William and Kate Middleton are among the royal neighbors they will lose when they move.
  • The Queen and Prince Philip live in Buckingham Palace, about 2 miles away from Kensington Palace.

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are moving out of Kensington Palace to set up a new home in the grounds of Windsor Castle to prepare for their first child, leaving their royal neighbors behind.

The couple currently shares the royal residence with more than a dozen other major royals, but they will move to Frogmore Cottage in early 2019.

Kensington Palace palace, a royal residence since the 1600s, is easily the most bustling of the royal family's many grand homes. Its resident were at the centre of the two royal weddings and royal birth this year.

Kensington Palace general view

Within its grounds are a host of separate properties, ranging from relatively humble cottages, to the grand 20-room apartment occupied by Prince William, Kate Middleton, and their young family.

As well as royal living quarters, which tend to be relatively sedately decorated, it is also home to lavish state rooms used for grand occasions, like this one:

Kensington Palace interior

Harry and Meghan have been living in Nottingham College:

While they may be moving soon, until now Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have been living in a two-bed cottage in the palace grounds.

They lived there before they got married on May 19, and came back two days after the ceremony to make it their marital home.

The cottage, nicknamed "Nott Cott" and often described as "snug," has been Harry's home since 2013.

Meghan moved in just after their engagement was made public in November 2017. Harry proposed to Meghan when they were spending an evening together at Nottingham Cottage, surprising her while they were roasting a chicken.

After announcing their engagement, they gave an interview from the cottage, sitting on its sofa, which is one of the only times the public has seen inside:

Meghan Markle Prince Harry

They will leave Kensington Pace behind in early 2019.

Here's a breakdown of who's who, and where they live in Kensington Palace:

Prince William, Kate Middleton, Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis:
Apartment 1A

William, Kate, and their children are not only the largest group of royals in Kensington Palace but the closest to the throne.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, they have the best rooms going. The family of five occupies Apartment 1A, a collection of 20 stately rooms with a commanding view of Hyde Park.

They moved to Kensington Palace full time in October 2013, not long after their first child, Prince George, was born. Princess Charlotte followed in 2015, and Prince Louis in April 2018.

The public rarely get to see inside, but photographers were allowed to take photos of a reception room when William and Kate hosted the Obamas in 2016:

We also saw another view (or maybe even another room) where Prince George played on a rocking horse before meeting the US president.

Duke of Gloucester and Duchess of Gloucester: Apartment 1

The Duke of Gloucester, one of Queen Elizabeth II's cousins, and his wife, the Duchess of Gloucester, were the last to reside in Apartment 1. It isn't clear whether they moved out during the renovation work.

It is also not clear if they continued to live in the apartment while renovations were underway. British newspaper The Sun had previously reported that the couple offered to vacate the property to make way for Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, though this plan has not come to fruition in light of their move to Windsor.

Duke of Gloucester Duchess of Gloucester

Like William and Kate's home at 1A, the dwelling is a large complex of rooms in the main palace building. The two used to be one enormous set of rooms until they were divided in the 1950s.

The complex has 21 rooms, slightly pipping the size of William and Kate's, but few details are available other than its overall size.

Princess Eugenie and Jack Brooksbank: Ivy Cottage

The newest royals at Kensington Palace are Princess Eugenie, who is William's and Harry's cousin, and her husband, Jack Brooksbank, a London socialite.

According to The Sun, the couple moved into a cottage right next to Harry and Meghan's about the same time Kate was in the hospital delivering Prince Louis.

princess eugenie engagement

The couple announced their engagement in January, a few weeks after getting engaged while vacationing in Nicaragua.

They got married at Windsor Castle in the same chapel as Harry and Meghan on October 12, but the occasion attracted less publicity.

Prince and Princess Michael of Kent: Apartment 10

Prince Michael of Kent, another of the queen's cousins but from a more junior line, lives in the main palace building with his wife.

She is known as Princess Michael, in the old-fashioned tradition by which the wives of princes take their husband's name.

Prince Michael of Kent Princess Michael of Kent

This same rule means that Kate can technically be referred to as Princess William of Cambridge, and Meghan as Princess Henry of Wales, but the names are not widely used.

Their apartment, No. 10, consists of five bedrooms and five receptions rooms. They used to have use of the property rent-free, but since 2008 they have been paying a reported£10,000 ($13,600) per month in rent.

The Duke and Duchess of Kent: Wren House

The Duke of Kent, Prince Michael's older brother, also lives in the Kensington Palace grounds with his wife, the Duchess.

Their home, Wren House, is named after the famous British architect Christopher Wren, who built St Paul's Cathedral and several properties for the royal household.

Duke and Duchess of Kent

Few details about their home have ever been made public. It is physically between Ivy and Nottingham cottages and appears to be of a similar size.

What about the queen?

Queen Elizabeth II lives at Buckingham Palace with her husband, Prince Philip. It's about 2 miles from Kensington Palace, across Hyde Park and Green Park.

Kensington Palace to Buckingham Palace.JPG

It's not quite as cosy as living on the same property, but if Her Majesty ever wants to drop in on her cousins, grandchildren or great-grandchildren, they aren't far away.

Red Dead Redemption 2

  • "Red Dead Redemption 2" came out on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One on October 26, but players have been waiting since release to play "Red Dead Online," the game's free multiplayer mode.
  • Rockstar Games originally said "Red Dead Online" would enter public beta in mid-November and has told players to expect some growing pains early on.
  • Players will be able to explore the world of "Red Dead Online" alone or with friends. It's expected to offer a mix of storytelling, competitive, and cooperative gameplay.
  • Rockstar plans to support "Red Dead Online" with constant updates and adjustments. Healthy ongoing support for "Grand Theft Auto Online" has helped Rockstar sell more than 100 million copies of "Grand Theft Auto V" since 2013.

Rockstar Games' "Red Dead Redemption 2" was one of the year's most anticipated games, releasing on October 26th to plenty of fanfare. But a major portion of the game has been missing for the past month, the online multiplayer mode, "Red Dead Online."

In September, Rockstar revealed that "Red Dead Online" wouldn't be ready on release and would enter beta testing in November. Rockstar developers have said they consider "Red Dead Online" and "Red Dead Redemption 2" to be two different games, though "Red Dead Online" is free for anyone who buys the PlayStation 4 or Xbox One versions of "Red Dead Redemption 2." Now, with just a few days left in November, Rockstar is keeping true to its word and rolling out the online beta for all players this week.

Here's the breakdown on when you'll be able to play the beta:

  • Those who bought the ultimate edition of "Red Dead Redemption 2" will get first dibs on the "Red Dead Online" beta starting tomorrow, November 27th, The Verge reports.
  • Those who played "Red Dead Redemption 2" on release day, October 26th, will be allowed into the beta on Wednesday, November 28th.
  • Anyone who played between October 26th and October 29th will be able to join "Red Dead Online" on Thursday, November 29th.
  • On Friday November 30th, the "Red Dead Online" beta will be open to everyone who plays the game.

According to Rockstar, "Red Dead Online" will feature both competitive and cooperative gameplay, but the company is warning fans to expect some growing pains. Players will be able to explore the open-world environment of "Red Dead Online" alone or with friends, and the online mode will have its own narrative storyline.

"As with most online experiences of this size and scale, there will inevitably be some turbulence at launch," Rockstar said in a September statement. "We look forward to working with our amazing and dedicated community to share ideas, help us fix teething problems and work with us to develop 'Red Dead Online' into something really fun and innovative."

Rockstar certainly has practice at building mega-popular online games; its ongoing support for "Grand Theft Auto Online" has helped sell more than 100 million copies of "Grand Theft Auto V" since September 2013.

The NPD Group reports that "Red Dead Redemption 2" is already the second-best selling game of 2018, with just nine days of reported sales after release. The game also managed to triple the launch sales of its predecessor, "Red Dead Redemption." With the introduction of "Red Dead Online," the game will have laid plenty of foundation for a healthy multiplayer community.

As such, Nintendo is attempting to shut down the many, many videos of "Super Smash Bros. Ultimate" that are repeatedly sprouting up.

It's a game of whack-a-mole that's unlikely to end, as more people download the game illegally and stream it online — an especially frustrating situation for Nintendo given how far we are from the game's official launch on December 7. Company representatives didn't respond to our request for comment.

Nintendo has a long history of taking legal action against piracy. Most recently, the company won a lawsuit against an Arizona couple who ran a website that distributed free versions of classic games.

It's unclear what action, if any, Nintendo will take regarding the piracy of "Super Smash Bros. Ultimate."

One thing is clear: With over 10 days to go until the game launches, and an ongoing flood of videos showcasing the game ahead of launch, Nintendo has a ton of work on its hands.

'Venom' just passed 'Wonder Woman' at the worldwide box office — and there's a particular reason it's continued to dominate

  • "Venom" has officially surpassed "Wonder Woman" at the worldwide box office.
  • A major reason is China, where "Venom" has made $205 million compared to $90 million for "Wonder Woman."
  • "Venom" has also topped other popular superhero movies, like "Spider-Man" and "Deadpool."

"Venom" continues to shock Hollywood at the box office.

Sony's Spider-Man spin-off continued its dominance over the weekend, pulling in another $21 million internationally and raising its worldwide total to $822 million.

That means it has officially surpassed another highly successful superhero movie, 2017's "Wonder Woman," at the global box office. "Wonder Woman" peaked at over $821 million, but "Venom" refuses to slow down.

READ MORE: How 'Venom' scored one of the biggest superhero-movie openings ever in China

A major reason for its stunning international box office is China. "Venom" has made $205 million there, while "Wonder Woman" made $90 million, according to Box Office Mojo.

Exhibitor Relations senior box-office analyst Jeff Bock told Business Insider earlier this month that monster movies are "bonafide box office gold" in China, and "Venom" is "as monstrous as it gets in the superhero universe." China also helped monster movies like "The Meg" and "Rampage" become box-office hits worldwide this year.

But "Wonder Woman" isn't the only popular superhero movie that "Venom" has topped.

READ MORE: 'Venom' gives Sony an edge over Disney in its fight to keep Spider-Man, according to industry experts

The movie has also crossed the worldwide box office (unadjusted for inflation) of nearly every other "Spider-Man" movie, including "Spider-Man," "Spider-Man 2," "The Amazing Spider-Man," and "The Amazing Spider-Man 2." The only ones it hasn't reached are "Spider-Man 3" and "Spider-Man: Homecoming," which made $890 million and $880 million, respectively.

"Venom" is currently 70th on the list of highest-grossing movies in the world of all time, according to Box Office Mojo. Superhero movies like "Guardians of the Galaxy," "X-Men: Days of Future Past," and both "Deadpool" movies are below it.

"Venom" has revitalized Sony's "Spider-Man" plans, so it's not surprising that the studio likely already scheduled a sequel for October, 2020. Expect a lot more "Venom" in the years to come.

Oscar-winning director Guillermo del Toro says he's lost over a decade of work on unmade movies, including 'Justice League Dark' and 'Beauty and the Beast'

  • Oscar-winning director Guillermo del Toro shared a list of movies on Twitter Monday that he'd written or developed that never got made.
  • The list includes "Justice League Dark," "Beauty and the Beast," and "Pacific Rim 2."
  • Del Toro said he lost more than a decade of work on the projects.

"Justice League" fans could start asking for the "Guillermo del Toro cut" soon.

The Oscar-winning director of "The Shape of Water" shared a list of movies on Twitter Monday that he had written, co-written, or developed that had yet to be produced. The list included "Justice League Dark," a "Beauty and the Beast" movie, and a "Pacific Rim" sequel that he said was "very different" than the one that came to theaters this year, "Pacific Rim Uprising."

"The thing is- each script takes about a year, so- more than a decade of work lost," del Toro tweeted.

In the comics, "Justice League Dark" is a team that takes on supernatural enemies and is comprised of magic-based characters like Etrigan the Demon and Swamp Thing. It's far from the super team that audiences saw in Zack Snyder's "Justice League" movie last year.

The movie has been long in development, and del Toro was attached to write and direct in 2013. Last year he recalled that he was "mighty proud" of the script, but in 2015, he told The Daily Beast that he left the project to focus on "Pacific Rim 2."

"Warners liked the script, they were very enthusiastic and wanted to green-light it but they wanted it to coincide with the shoot of 'Pacific Rim 2,'" he said. "I was put in a very difficult place facing a difficult choice, and I chose to do 'Pacific Rim 2.'"

Unfortunately, neither project saw the light of day.

Belle and the Beast Beauty and the Beast

Del Toro was also attached to a "Beauty and the Beast" remake starring Emma Watson before he dropped out in 2014. Disney made its own movie that went on to gross over $1 billion worldwide last year, but del Toro's script was not used.

Del Toro's next project is on track, however, as he will write and direct a stop-motion "Pinocchio" movie for Netflix.

Below is every movie on del Toro's list of unfinished projects:

  • “The Witches”
  • “Justice League Dark”
  • “Beauty and the Beast”
  • “At the Mountains of Madness”
  • “Fantastic Voyage”
  • “The Count of Monte Cristo”
  • “Mephisto’s Bridge”
  • “Pacific Rim 2”
  • “Secret Project (Untitled)”
  • “Superstitious”
  • “Nightmare Alley”
  • “Haunted Mansion”
  • “The Hulk” TV pilot
  • “The Buried Giant”
  • “The Coffin”
  • “Drood”
  • “List of 7”
  • “Wind in the Willows”

3 video games that deserve a second chance

  • Lots of people buy video games, try them briefly, and forget about them for one reason or another.
  • There are plenty of games that deserve a second chance, or a revisit if you gave up on them the first time.

Not every video game makes an excellent impression the first time around. But many games, especially in recent years, tend to improve greatly after their initial public launch. Updates, expansions, and even remasters can give an old video game new life.

While there are dozens of video games worth revisiting, we highlighted the three that we think should be at the top of your "second chance" list.

SEE ALSO: 'Red Dead Online,' the online multiplayer mode for 'Red Dead Redemption 2' will launch tomorrow as a beta test

"Destiny 2" — Available on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC

"Destiny 2" was rough at launch, to say the least. I was a big "Destiny" player even before the sequel came out, but was extremely disappointed in all of the ways "Destiny 2" had regressed: Fun systems were made less fun, the all-too-rare "exotic" items were suddenly way too easy to obtain, and the game was generally more boring than the first outing.

Like the first "Destiny" game, though, "Destiny 2" experienced a massive overhaul in the form of an expansion, which arrived in September, exactly one year after the launch of the base game. The new expansion, "Forsaken," drastically changes the way players experience "Destiny" for the better. I would even call it the best "Destiny" expansion to date.

Unfortunately, many people are missing out on all of the new goodies in "Destiny 2 Forsaken" because the 2017 launch of "Destiny 2" was so bad. But if you give "Destiny 2" a chance, you'll enjoy a really fun and addicting sci-fi shooter that feels way more rewarding than it was a year ago. If you've ever wanted to know what it would feel like to be a superhero in space, "Destiny 2" is your opportunity — but you need to get it with the "Forsaken" expansion to really enjoy everything the game has to offer.

Price: "Forsaken Legendary Collection," which includes the base game and all three expansions, costs $35 on Amazon

"The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt" — Available on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC

I'll admit it: The first time I tried playing "The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt," I found it overwhelming. There were too many quests to do, and too many large areas to explore. I had other games I wanted to play at the time, so I put it down and moved on.

This summer, though, I found myself looking for a new game to play, so I decided to give "The Witcher 3" another chance. I started a new game, and I was immediately enthralled.

By the time I played "The Witcher 3," the game's developers CD Projekt Red had vastly improved the game's stability, fixing numerous bugs and issues that hampered the game's performance. And the game also had two massive new expansions available for me to play, including the gorgeous "Blood and Wine" expansion, which features my favorite locale and storyline in the entire game.

"The Witcher 3" can be a magical experience. It presents you a massive, immersive fantasy world filled with monsters, magic, and memorable quests and characters. The game's looks and performance have significantly improved since launch, and if you pick it up now, you can enjoy all of the excellent expansions as soon as you're ready for them. With so much to do, "The Witcher 3" is one of the best values you can get right now in a video game.

Price: Game of the Year Edition, which includes base game and all expansions, costs $36 on Amazon

"Dark Souls Remastered" — Available on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, PC

This year, fans were treated to a remastered version of the original "Dark Souls" game, which first came out in 2011 for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. "Dark Souls" was notorious for being an extremely difficult game, but it also featured incredible design elements like interconnected environments and a surprisingly deep combat system.

"Dark Souls Remastered" features the original base game and all of its expansions, fully remastered for current-generation game consoles like the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. The game also launched for the Nintendo Switch in October, so you can play "Dark Souls" on the go.

Many people may have missed "Dark Souls Remastered" because it came out around the same time as other popular games like "God of War," which was one of the most talked-about games of 2018, but with the holiday season approaching, now is the best time to revisit this challenging game.

Price:$27 to $32 (depending on platform) on Amazon

Entertainment pioneers Chris Albrecht and Curtis '50 Cent' Jackson will discuss TV's golden age at IGNITION 2018

50 Cent Chris Albrecht

The television landscape has shifted dramatically over the past decade. We'll be talking to some of the executives and creatives heralding in TV's new golden age at IGNITION.

Starz CEO Chris Albrecht will take the stage with award-winning rapper, entrepreneur, actor, and producer Curtis "50 Cent" Jackson.

Albrecht has held his executive post at Starz since 2010. Before that, he spent 22 years at HBO, where he was credited with developing groundbreaking shows such as "Sex and the City," "The Sopranos," "Curb Your Enthusiasm," and "Entourage."

One of the most recognized rappers, Jackson recently pivoted into entrepreneurship. In 2003, he founded the film-production company G-Unit Film and Television Inc.

In 2014, Starz debuted G-Unit's scripted series "Power." Jackson is a cocreator, executive producer, and costar of the series.

The drama was an overnight success and renewed for a second season after just one episode. "Power" has become a lynchpin for Starz programming as Albrecht works to reinvent the network as a destination for premium original content.

In late 2018, Starz signed Jackson to an exclusive four-year deal, solidifying a long-term partnership between Albrecht and Jackson for years to come.

Albrecht has said of Jackson: "Both on screen and off, Curtis has proven that he can deliver content that our viewers want to watch. He is the real deal, and we have given him a real deal, with what I believe to be among the most significant deals to date for an executive producer in premium television."

Hear more about Albrecht and Jackson's vision for the future of premium television, as OTT giants like Netflix, Amazon, and Hulu capture market share in an increasingly competitive environment.

14 emerging movie directors who will take over Hollywood in 2019 and beyond

eighth grade A24

  • These are the directors whose movies we'll be falling in love with for years to come.
  • They include the likes of Steven Caple Jr. ("Creed II"), Bo Burnham ("Eighth Grade"), and Desiree Akhavan ("The Miseducation of Cameron Post").

2018 has been a great year at the box office, and it has also showcased the talents of many filmmakers who are on the cusp of major fame.

In some cases, like that of Bo Burnham (director of the indie hit "Eighth Grade") and Steven Caple Jr. (director of box-office champ "Creed II"), we got a glimpse of talents who were just figuring out their craft. With others, like Desiree Akhavan ("The Miseducation of Cameron Post") and Brady Corbet ("Vox Lux"), 2018 showed us that artists known for their work in front of the camera are just as talented behind it.

Here we look at 14 directors who you should keep an eye out for in 2019 and beyond:

SEE ALSO: 22 movies coming to theaters before 2018 ends that you need to see this holiday season

Desiree Akhavan ("The Miseducation of Cameron Post")

Since she built a fan base through her 2011 web series, "The Slope," Akhavan's profile has only grown as she continues to tell some of the most original stories about sexuality and relationships of anyone working today. Her 2014 feature debut, "Appropriate Behaviour," also starred Akhavan as a Persian bisexual Brooklynite just trying to fit in. And in this year's "The Miseducation of Cameron Post," which won the grand jury prize at Sundance in January, Akhavan cast Chloë Grace Moretz in the incredible role of a teenage girl forced to go to gay-conversion therapy. Akhavan is currently starring in the British series she created, "The Bisexual" (which you can see on Hulu).

Julius Avery ("Overlord")

With just two features under his best, Julius Avery, an Austrian writer-director, has quickly gotten on the radar of some of the biggest players in Hollywood. J.J. Abrams produced his latest movie, "Overlord," which has become a hit with critics and is destined to be a horror cult classic — it takes place before D-Day and goes behind enemy lines with US soldiers who uncover secret Nazi experiments. And off of that success, Avery has now been pegged to direct a "Flash Gordon" movie for Fox.

Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck ("Captain Marvel")

Though Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck are known in the indie world for favorites such as "Half Nelson," "Sugar," and "Mississippi Grind," they'll hit the mainstream in 2019 with "Captain Marvel." Marking the first movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe with a female as the lead, Boden and Fleck's grounded quality will be a nice mix to the action and explosions we've come to expect from a Marvel movie.

The 5 highest-paid TV hosts of 2018, including almost $150 million for Judge Judy

  • Forbes released its 2018 list of the world's highest-paid TV hosts on Monday, and Judy Sheindlin, a.k.a. Judge Judy, topped the list with $147 million.
  • That's nearly $60 million more than the second highest-paid host, Ellen DeGeneres.
  • The list also includes Ryan Seacrest, Dr. Phil, and Steve Harvey.

For the first time, Judy Sheindlin (a.k.a. Judge Judy) is the world's highest-paid TV show host of the year — and it's not even close.

According to Forbes, Sheindlin made $147 million between June 1, 2017 and June 1, 2018, before taxes. That's nearly $60 million more than the second highest-paid host, Ellen DeGeneres. Sheindlin sold the rights to her "Judge Judy," which consists of over 5,000 episodes, to CBS last year for $100 million, according to Forbes.

All of the personalities on Forbes' top five are daytime hosts. Nightly hosts like Fox News' Sean Hannity bring in 3 million viewers, but "Judge Judy" averages 10 million a day, even in its 23rd season, according to Forbes.

Ryan Seacrest also made the list after being accused of sexual misconduct last November by his former stylist (he denied the allegations, and an E! News investigation concluded earlier this year that there was "insufficient evidence" to support the claims).

Forbes said Seacrest's earnings jumped from $58 million to $74 million because of his gig hosting the "American Idol" reboot. He also co-hosts "Live with Kelly and Ryan."

Below are the five highest-paid TV hosts of 2018, according to Forbes:

How big is 'Fortnite'? With more than 200 million players, it's now equal to nearly two-thirds the US population

Fortnite championship

  • "Fortnite" is stronger than ever, with more than 200 million registered players.
  • That's a huge increase from June, when just 125 million players were registered.
  • Additionally, "Fortnite" has more than 80 million monthly players.

The biggest game in the world — "Fortnite" — is showing no signs of slowing down.

That's clear from the latest statistic to come out of "Fortnite" creator Epic Games: More than 200 million players have registered accounts, Epic Games confirmed on Tuesday.

Between June 2018 and November 2018, 75 million new players registered, putting the total at more than 200 million.

That's a pretty remarkable number. It puts "Fortnite" registered player numbers in the same realm as the most popular games of all time — games like "Tetris" and "Minecraft" and "Grand Theft Auto 5."

Fortnite High Stakes

That said, there's a big difference between "Fortnite" and those games: "Fortnite" is free, and available on pretty much anything that will play video games. It also doesn't hurt that the focus of "Fortnite" is an online-only multiplayer mode named "Battle Royale" that's endlessly re-playable.

It's that mix of attributes that's helped "Fortnite" become the most popular game in the world since the Battle Royale mode launched in September 2017.

It's been barely a year since "Fortnite" began its climb to the top, and already its victory dances have bled into professional sports.

It feels like months since Drake joined up with Tyler "Ninja" Blevins to stream the game on Twitch, thus boosting its visibility even more — but that's because it was months ago, way back in March. March!

ninja and drake fortnite

And now, just one year after Battle Royale hit "Fortnite," more people are playing it monthly than there are people living in Drake's home country — by a factor of two! Way to make Canada look underpopulated, "Fortnite."

And if we're talking about registered players? At over 200 million, "Fortnite" has a player base that's nearly two-thirds of the entire US population.
