A Bollywood production company is about to steal PewDiePie's top spot on YouTube — and viewers are watching it play out in real time

  • PewDiePie has been the top subscribed YouTube channel since 2013.
  • Now, his spot might be taken by Bollywood production company T-Series.
  • Viewers are watching PewDiePie and T-Series' subscriber counts play out in real time.

PewDiePie, the controversial Swedish YouTube personality famous for his livestreamed video game commentaries, has maintained his spot as YouTube's top subscribed channel for five years. But now, he's about to lose his top spot to T-Series, a Bollywood production company known for its lavish music videos.

So far, PewDiePie, whose real name is Felix Kjellberg,  has amassed a fan base of more than 66 million subscribers. Currently, T-Series has nearly 63 million subscribers and counting. Now, viewers are watching T-Series' tally increase in real time wth a livestreamed display of PewDiePie and T-Series's subscriber counts.

As the Verge points out, even if T-Series overtakes PewDiePie as YouTube's most subscribed channel, he still won't lose his seat as the top-subscribed individual channel on the site. For now, there's still plenty of time for PewDiePie to compete: it's estimated that it will take about two more months for T-Series to catch up.

YouTube is overhauling its gaming section — and now it looks more like Twitch

  • YouTube has announced it will discontinue support for its YouTube Gaming app in March 2019 after less than four years.
  • A new web portal, Youtube.com/gaming, will replace the service and allow users to search through video game specific content.
  • More than 200 million users watch gaming content on YouTube everyday, but the company has struggled to endear the sense of community seen on Twitch, a competing streaming service.

The YouTube Gaming app will cease to be in March 2019, as the streaming service reassesses how to better serve one of its largest audiences.

YouTube users looking exclusively for video game content can now visit a revamped web portal for YouTube Gaming that separates videos by game, and promotes live streamers at youtube.com/gaming.

YouTube Gaming launched in 2015 as a competitor to Twitch, a gaming focused streaming platform that has become wildly popular for gamers looking to build a following and monetize their playtime. YouTube boasts more than 200 million viewers for video game content every day and 50 billion hours of gaming videos watched in the last year, but struggles to build the sort of of dedicated gaming communities seen on Twitch.

YouTube Gaming

Major gaming events and individual content creators alike have chosen to partner with Twitch due to its monetization options and a larger focus on community interaction. While YouTube and Twitch both offer a chat service for viewers, Twitch has built a culture across the site with the use of emotes and moderators who voluntarily watch the live chat for bad behavior. Viewers can also subscribe to specific channels for exclusive emotes, and they can purchase a sitewide currency to tip streamers they enjoy.

The ability to earn money while creating content without relying on viewer counts or ad revenue brought a number of popular non-gaming content creators to Twitch, prompting the company to launch Twitch Creative in 2015, the same year YouTube Gaming rolled out. With the line between gaming specific and creative content blurring, YouTube found itself in competition with Twitch for popular content creators. YouTube began offering its own channel subscriptions in June 2018; viewers receive a special badge next to their name and access to subscriber only chats.

YouTube Gaming Portal

The new YouTube Gaming portal feels familiar to Twitch's layout as well, with a handful of featured videos or streams being promoted at the top of the page, and the rest of the content sorted by game or viewer engagement.

For gamers who are looking to avoid the rest of YouTube, the portal is straightforward and organized, but it remains to be seen if the site can spark a greater level of engagement between YouTube gaming channels and the millions of viewers using the side for on-demand video. YouTube has committed to highlighting a "Gaming Creator on the Rise" each week to help promote less popular channels.

Video game content remains a major portion of the greater YouTube audience: Swedish gamer Felix "PewDiePie" Kjellberg has owned the most followed YouTube channel since 2013 and now boasts more than 66 million followers. However, the failure of the YouTube Gaming app shows that the streaming service is still struggling to retain viewer interest and guide them to new content.

A potential TV show gives new life to a popular fan theory that Loki didn't die in 'Avengers: Infinity War'

avengers infinity war

  • Loki will reportedly star in a TV series on Disney's upcoming streaming service.
  • Thanos killed Loki in "Avengers: Infinity War."
  • It's possible the series could be a prequel, but a popular fan theory lays out how Loki may have faked his death.
  • The theory explains that Loki used his left hand to try and stab Thanos, but is right-handed.

Loki — played by Tom Hiddleston in the Marvel Cinematic Universe — will star in a limited series for Disney's upcoming streaming service, according to Variety.

Since Loki perished at the hands of Thanos is "Avengers: Infinity War," it raises the question: Is he still alive?

It's possible that the series could be a prequel or take place between the "Thor" movies. But it's also possible that Loki didn't actually die in "Infinity War" and instead faked his death, and a popular fan theory reveals why.

The theory explains that Loki is right-handed, and points out that Loki uses his left hand when he tries to stab Thanos in the throat at the beginning of "Infinity War." In the movie, some time passes between when Thanos fights the Hulk and when Loki appears again. During this time, it's possible he could have slipped away and projected an illusion in his place.

The theory suggests that there has only been one other time when he used his left hand, and that's when he faked his death in "Thor: The Dark World."

A Reddit user broke down the theory back in July, which is below:

"If you look, in movies since the Thor 1 to Avengers 1 to Ragnarok, he wields with his right hand. He holds weapons with his right and the scepter in Avengers with his right. There are two occasions he uses his left hand (that I've found). One, when he fakes his own death in Dark World. You can find him holding the dagger with his left hand during the entire scene. Two, when he stabs Thanos. So, Loki's illusion uses his left hand because he's a mirrored version? The Loki that was killed in the beginning of IW was an illusion and he's still out there, maybe disguised or just in hiding."

Other Reddit users argued that Loki could have been holding the dagger in his left hand to hide it, as none of Thanos' followers were standing to his left.

Before he "dies," Loki reminds Thanos that he is the God of Mischief, and tells Thor, "I assure you, brother, the sun will shine on us again," which has made some fans wonder if he was warning Thor that he might come back.

We won't find out until the "Infinity War" sequel next year, though.

  • Maroon 5 has reportedly agreed to perform at Super Bowl LIII.
  • The band's frontman, Adam Levine, has said in the past that the band has been on the shortlist for years to play it.

Maroon 5 has finally gotten the call to perform at the Super Bowl halftime show.

According to reports in Us Weekly and Variety, the band was offered the gig and has accepted. Frontman Adam Levine has said in the past that the band has been on the shortlist to play the Super Bowl for years.

Maroon 5 is currently on tour promoting its 2017 album, "Red Pill Blues."

Playing halftime at the Super Bowl is a prized honor in music. Everyone from Lady Gaga to Prince has performed at it. Last year, Justin Timberlake had the honor at Super Bowl LII.

Maroon 5 is certainly a safe choice for the NFL, and it will likely lead to some groans on social media. Even before the reports of the band playing Super Bowl LIII (on February 3, 2019), 2014 performer Bruno Mars took to Twitter pleading with the league to choose a hip-hop artist for the halftime show.

At least we'll probably get to see Cardi B, as she's featured on the Maroon 5 song, "Girls Like You."

"It’s a Super Bowl tradition to speculate about the performers for the Pepsi Halftime Show," an NFL spokesman said to Business Insider when asked to confirm the reports. "We are continuing to work with Pepsi on our plans but do not have any announcements to make on what will be another epic show."

It looks like Nintendo could release a miniature Nintendo 64 console to compete with the new Sony PlayStation Classic (NTDOY)

Nintendo Switch

Nintendo's got a hot console in the Nintendo Switch, which launched last year. It is, for all intents and purposes, Nintendo's main product.

But one of its classics — the Nintendo 64 — may be getting a miniaturized re-release, and it could arrive just in time to take on Sony's just-announced PlayStation Classic, which comes out on December 3rd. Hilariously, this would be a perfect throwback to the original showdown between the PlayStation 1 and Nintendo 64 back in the mid-'90s.

But we're getting ahead of ourselves. In addition to the Switch, Nintendo makes the 3DS — a handheld console that's winding down after years of popularity. This guy:

New Nintendo 3DS XL

And, in addition to the 3DS, Nintendo's produces miniaturized, less expensive versions of its original consoles.

There's the NES Classic Edition, which launched in late 2016. And then there's the Super NES Classic Edition, arrived in September 2017.

Both play into the nostalgia of millions, and became so popular that Nintendo had to revise its production plans — both consoles are now available in wide supply after initially being introduced as limited time releases.

NES Classic Edition / Super NES Classic Edition

In addition to all those things, Nintendo appears to be making a similarly small, less expensive version of the original Nintendo 64.

Who could forget:

Nintendo 64

That's the original Nintendo 64 you see above, but a European trademark filing from Nintendo indicates that a "Classic Edition" of the original is in the works. That means a miniaturized version of the original system and its gamepad, a sub-$100 price point, and a gaggle of classic games built right into the console.

To be clear, Nintendo hasn't announced such a console, nor has the company previously indicated it's interested in making a "Classic Edition" of the original Nintendo 64. But we do have some clues from the filing that point to just such a console being in the works.

In the filing, a distinctive image is shown:

Nintendo 64 (trademark)

The trademark image isn't just notable because it's the outline of the Nintendo 64 gamepad — it's notable because it's the same outline of a gamepad that appears on the retail branding of Nintendo's other "Classic Edition" consoles.

For example:

NES Classic Edition gamepad (arrows)

That silhouette of the NES Classic Edition gamepad on the top of the box? It's identical to another trademark filing image from Nintendo:

NES Classic Edition (Logo)

This close-up really highlights how similar the image is:

NES Classic Edition

Nintendo filed the same logo trademark in Europe for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System gamepad silhouette, and that same silhouette appears on top of the Super NES Classic Edition box.

So, is Nintendo making a Nintendo 64 Classic Edition for sure? No, not for sure — but there's certainly some smoke here. And it would make a lot of sense; the generation that grew up with Nintendo 64 is now old enough to look at it nostalgically. For now, though, there's only smoke. It sure would make great competition for this year's PlayStation Classic, though!

Nintendo told us the following when asked for comment last year: "We have nothing to announce on this topic." We've reached out to see if they have anything else to add and will update when we hear back.

The PlayStation Classic is adorable, obviously. Just look at that tiny little replica of the original PlayStation! There's no way a full-sized CD could fit in that CD-ROM drive!

More importantly, though, the PlayStation Classic comes with 20 equally classic games — at least that's the case for the first five Sony has announced.

Here's what we know so far, and a few more that we expect will arrive with the PlayStation Classic on December 3:

The most anticipated game of the year will be missing a major online component when it comes out in October

Red Dead Redemption 2

  • "Red Dead Redemption 2" will launch on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One on October 26 — but players will have to wait November to play "Red Dead Online," the online multiplayer component
  • "Red Dead Online" will enter public beta in November, and developer Rockstar expects it to have some growing pains early on.
  • Players will be able to explore the world of "Red Dead Online" alone or with friends. It's expected to offer a mix of storytelling, competitive, and cooperative gameplay.
  • Rockstar plans to support "Red Dead Online" with constant updates and adjustments. Healthy ongoing support for "Grand Theft Auto Online" has helped Rockstar sell more than 100 million copies of "Grand Theft Auto V" since 2013.

Many, many gamers are eagerly awaiting the release of Rockstar Games' "Red Dead Redemption 2" on October 26 — almost certainly the most anticipated game of the year, with the possible exception of Nintendo's "Super Smash Bros. Ultimate."

But there's a little bad news: the game will be without online multiplayer for at least a few days, and possibly weeks, after launch. Rockstar Games has announced that "Red Dead Online," the action-western game's online multiplayer mode, won't be available until the launch of a a public beta-testing program in November.

"Red Dead Online" will be available for free to anyone who buys the PlayStation 4 or Xbox One versions of "Red Dead Redemption 2." Players will be able to explore the open-world environment alone or with friends, and the online mode will have its own narrative storyline. According to Rockstar, "Red Dead Online" will feature both competitive and cooperative gameplay, but the company is warning fans to expect some growing pains.

"As with most online experiences of this size and scale, there will inevitably be some turbulence at launch," a statement from Rockstar reads. "We look forward to working with our amazing and dedicated community to share ideas, help us fix teething problems and work with us to develop 'Red Dead Online' into something really fun and innovative."

Rockstar certainly has practice at building mega-popular online games; its ongoing support for "Grand Theft Auto Online" has helped sell more than 100 million copies of "Grand Theft Auto V" since September 2013.

Games sales analyst Mat Piscatella told Business Insider that Since "GTA 5" went on sale in September 2013, it has appeared in the top 20 best-selling games list 57 out of 58 times, through early August 2018. The only time it failed to break the top 20 was in October 2014, when the game landed at #21.

The original "Red Dead Redemption," released in 2010, was a popular online game in its own right — and Rockstar now has many more years of experience crafting exciting online play. If the new single-player campaign is anywhere near as impressive as the previous title, players of "Red Dead Redemption 2" will have plenty to hold them over until "Red Dead Online" is ready to launch. Still, this news will likely come as a bummer to many.

  • Lebron James is making a sequel to "Space Jam" with Ryan Coogler, the director of Marvel's "Black Panther," according to The Hollywood Reporter.
  • James will star in the film, while Coogler will produce it.
  • Bugs Bunny will also star.

"Black Panther" director Ryan Coogler is set to produce a sequel to "Space Jam" starring Lebron James, first reported by The Hollywood Reporter Wednesday and seemingly confirmed by James' production company shortly after.

James will act in the sequel to the 1996 film that starred Michael Jordan alongside Bugs Bunny in a live-action animated comedy. Bugs Bunny is set to return for the second installment.

Terence Nance, the creator of the HBO sketch comedy series "Random Acts of Flyness," will direct the film.

According to THR, production on the Warner Bros. film is slated to start in the 2019 NBA offseason.

James told THR that he "loved [Coogler's] vision" for "Black Panther," the blockbuster Marvel film released this spring. "For Ryan to be able to bring that to kids, it’s amazing," James told the outlet of the black heroes who appeared in "Black Panther."

James' production company, SpringHill Entertainment, seemed to confirm its coproduction of the "Space Jam" sequel in a tweet on Wednesday, which featured the following image of lockers named for Bugs Bunny, James, Nance, and Coogler:

James' last starring role came in Amy Schumer's 2015 romantic comedy, "Trainwreck." James' role in "Space Jam 2" coincides with his move to Los Angeles this summer, where he will not only play for the Los Angeles Lakers but, as many analystsnoted, look to increase his presence in Hollywood.

"Space Jam 2" has been a long-rumored production, but James confirmed to THR in 2016 that he would star in the sequel. At the time, THR reported that "Fast and Furious 6" director Justin Lin was slated to direct the film.

The CEO of one of the most important startups in video gaming explains why the next big thing hasn't yet replaced the smartphone (MSFT, FB, GOOGL)

$

Unity Technologies CEO John Riccitiello speaks onstage during Day 1 of TechCrunch Disrupt SF 2018 at Moscone Center on September 5, 2018 in San Francisco, California.

  • There's been lots of hype around virtual- and augmented-reality headsets in recent years — with some going so far as to say that they could replace the smartphone. To date, though, neither set of gadgets has caught on with mainstream consumers.
  • It's easy to understand why, said Unity Technologies CEO John Riccitiello in a recent interview with Business Insider.
  • Not only are such gadgets generally expensive and clunky, they lack compelling games and other experiences, Riccitiello said.
  • What's more, manufacturers have yet to back them with a major marketing push.

If you ask John Riccitiello, CEO of Unity Technologies, it's no great mystery why virtual- and augmented-reality gadgets have thus far been duds with consumers despite all the hype surrounding them.

You only have to contrast them with a successful game console, such as Sony's PlayStation 4, to get a sense of what's wrong.

The PlayStation 4 has a price many consumers can afford, is well-designed and relatively easy to use right out of the box, and offers a slew of compelling games — a combination of features that none of the VR or AR headsets can tout, Ricciteillo, a longtime game industry executive before joining Unity, told Business Insider in a recent interview.

Perhaps just as importantly, Sony launched its game console with a marketing blitz unlike any seen from the AR or VR headset makers.

Unity's software is used widely across the video gaming industry to build video games that work across console, PC, and smartphone platforms. It's also used to make virtual- and augmented-reality games and experiences, including "Pokémon Go."

"What we've had is a sizzle and a whimper and a little bit of smoke, but no one's done a heavy launch," said Riccitiello on the state of AR and VR. "And I think it's because, wisely, they recognize they're not at the form factor and the price to justify it," he says.

Companies have been working on AR and VR for years with little payoff

Many technology experts consider augmented- and virtual-reality headsets to be among the leading candidates to replace smartphones as consumers' primary computing devices. The technologies both involve displaying computer-generated images. With augmented reality, those images are layered over views of the real world; with virtual reality, users are completely immersed in artificially generated images.

sergey brin google glassElectronics makers and programmers have been working on both technologies for decades, and the first virtual-reality headset hit the market some 30 years ago. In recent years, a growing number of such gadgets has hit the shelves, including from major companies including Google, Sony, Facebook, and Microsoft. But thus far, neither augmented- nor virtual-reality gadgets has found mainstream appeal.

Cost is a big reason for that, especially on the AR side of things, Riccitiello said. Magic Leap One, perhaps the most hyped AR device to the hit the market so far, costs $2,300, while Microsoft's HoloLens, another major entrant, starts at $3,000.

But even VR headsets can be pricey. Oculus Rift and HTC Vive, the two most notable and advanced virtual-reality gadgets on the market, cost $400 and $500, respectively, and both require users to connect them to a powerful PC.

By contrast, the base model of the PlayStation 4 now costs $300. And users only need to connect it to their TV to start playing it.

"We're going to need to see these things come down in price," Riccitiello said.

The headsets so far have often been clunky or heavy

Another big factor holding the devices back from mass adoption is their design, he said. Game consoles work right out of the box, and they're standalone devices; they don't need to be connected to any other gadget. And they're relatively easy and comfortable to use; typically, you just hold a wireless controller in your hand.

The Microsoft HoloLens augmented reality headset is demonstrated on stage during the 2015 Microsoft Build Conference on April 29, 2015 at Moscone Center in San Francisco, California. Thousands are expected to attend the annual developer conference which runs through May 1.You can't say the same about most of the headsets on the market. Both the Rift and the Vive have to be tethered to PCs, while the Magic Leap One has to be connected to a hockey-puck-sized processing unit clipped to your belt or carried in a pocket. Rift and Vive can feel bulky and unwieldy; so too can HoloLens.

"You need something that works right out of the box," he said. "And it needs to meet a certain ergonomic design. It can't be 20 pounds of helmet on your head."

Another big shortcoming of the headsets thus far is the content that's been available for them, Riccitiello said. There's just not been any games or other applications for them that have been must-haves for most consumers.

"You need great content to sell the hardware, but great makers of content won't make the content until the hardware's installed in a large enough base to justify the investment," he said.

Headset makers to date really haven't backed them with marketing

A woman checks a pair of Vive Virtual Reality goggles, produced by Taiwan's HTC, during the Gamescom 2015 fair in Cologne, Germany August 5, 2015.But the biggest factor may be simply the fact that the makers of the various headsets haven't given the devices the kind of marketing and other support they'd need to have a major launch.

When Sony or Nintendo or Microsoft launches a console, they invest millions, even billions of dollars on things such as luring developers to make games for their new machines and advertising them widely to consumers. Nothing like that has been done in support of the augmented and reality headsets, he said.

Still, Riccitiello's a believer that such gadgets will eventually take off with consumers. Somewhere in the next two to four years, once the hardware makers are able to perfect the technology, get prices down, and build up compelling content, one of them will mount a major consumer push, and the market will take off, he said.

"The thing is, on the consumer side, people are waiting for magic to happen," he said. "Magic doesn't happen. It's engineered."

Disney's CEO on whether he regrets firing 'Guardians of the Galaxy' director James Gunn

guardians of the galaxy

  • Disney CEO Bob Iger told The Hollywood Reporter that the decision to fire "Guardians of the Galaxy" director James Gunn was brought to him "as a unanimous decision of a variety of executives at the studio and I supported it."
  • "I haven't second-guessed their decision," he added.
  • Disney fired Gunn in July after years-old offensive tweets of his resurfaced.
  • The "Guardians of the Galaxy 3" production has been put on hold.

Fans still hoping that Disney will change its mind about firing "Guardians of the Galaxy" director James Gunn should lower their expectations. Disney CEO Bob Iger doesn't regret the decision.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Iger revealed his involvement in the decisions both to fire Gunn after offensive tweets of his resurfaced, and to cancel ABC's "Roseanne" reboot after star Roseanne Barr made racist remarks on Twitter.

"I would say there is a blend of my helping to make the decision to my supporting the decisions that have been made," Iger told THR. "'Roseanne' was completely unanimous. We discussed how it would be communicated and when because there were a number of entities that had to be properly filled in, but the decision was completely unanimous. The James Gunn decision was brought to me as a unanimous decision of a variety of executives at the studio and I supported it."

He added, "I haven't second-guessed their decision."

Disney fired Gunn from the third "Guardians" movie in July after conservative personalities uncovered years-old tweets — which Gunn had apologized for in the past — where he made offensive jokes about child abuse. Gunn had finished the script to "Guardians of the Galaxy 3" before he was fired.

Since then, the "Guardians" cast released a letter in support of Gunn, and franchise stars like Chris Pratt and Dave Bautista tweeted that they wished to see him reinstated. Bautista has been the most vocal against Disney. He called working for the company "nauseating" and even threatened to quit if Marvel didn't use Gunn's script.

Last month, THR reported that the "Guardians 3" production has been put on hold indefinitely. It's unknown whether it will make its 2020 release date.

  • The director is best known for helming the first season of HBO's "True Detective" and the acclaimed Netflix movie, "Beasts of No Nation."
  • Bond 25's original director, Danny Boyle, left the project a month ago over creative differences.

James Bond 25 has found a director to replace Danny Boyle, and it's a very interesting choice.

Production will begin on March 4, 2019, with a release date set for February 14, 2020, according to the tweet.

"We are delighted to be working with Cary," Bond franchise producers Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli were quoted as saying in another tweet in the thread. "His versatility and innovation make him an excellent choice for our next James Bond adventure."

Fukunaga has become one of the most sought-after filmmakers in Hollywood after the stylish first season of "True Detective" wowed everyone. Disney's CEO says you should get ready for a 'slowdown' on 'Star Wars' films

  • Disney CEO Bob Iger has reconsidered his "Star Wars" release strategy in the wake of the disappointing box-office performance of May's "Solo: A Star Wars Story."
  • Iger told The Hollywood Reporter in a new interview that "Star Wars" fans could expect "some slowdown" in the production of the series.

It appears the disappointing box-office performance of "Solo: A Star Wars Story" has led Disney CEO Bob Iger to reconsider his release strategy for the "Star Wars" film series.

Iger told The Hollywood Reporter in an interview published Thursday that "Star Wars" fans could expect "some slowdown" in the production of the series, which saw two films, "Solo" and "Star Wars: The Last Jedi," released in the span of five months this past year.

While 2017's "The Last Jedi" grossed $1.33 billion worldwide and received critical acclaim, the "Solo" spin-off fell way short of box-office expectations in its debut over Memorial Day weekend, ending with a $392 million worldwide gross against a reported $250 million production budget.

"Solo" notably had extended reshoots under director Ron Howard, who replaced Philip Lord and Christopher Miller, the directors who were ousted in summer 2017. The movie's critical reception was lukewarm.

THR's Matthew Belloni said during his conversation with Iger that "many believe Disney should pump the breaks and not put out a 'Star Wars' movie each year."

In responding to Belloni, Iger referred to the upcoming "Star Wars" film series from the "Game of Thrones" cocreators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss and detailed the "mistake" he believes he made in the "Star Wars" release strategy, along with his subsequent approach to a "slowdown."

"I made the timing decision, and as I look back, I think the mistake that I made — I take the blame — was a little too much, too fast," Iger said. "You can expect some slowdown, but that doesn't mean we're not going to make films."

He added that the director J.J. Abrams was busy making "Episode IX" and that "creative entities," including Benioff and Weiss, were "developing sagas of their own, which we haven't been specific about."

"And we are just at the point where we're going to start making decisions about what comes next after J.J.'s," Iger added. "But I think we're going to be a little bit more careful about volume and timing. And the buck stops here on that."

  • Disney CEO Bob Iger told The Hollywood Reporter that it "makes sense" for Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige to oversee the "X-Men" franchise after the Disney/Fox merger.
  • Iger's comments further suggest that X-Men characters will be introduced to the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
  • "There shouldn't be two Marvels," Iger said.

Disney CEO Bob Iger has his own vision for Fox's "X-Men" franchise, and it doesn't exactly involve Fox.

Iger revealed in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter that he'd like Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige to oversee the franchise after Disney's acquisition of Fox, but tip-toed around the subject because of what has (or hasn't) been communicated to Fox.

"I think it only makes sense," Iger said. "I want to be careful here because of what's been communicated to the Fox folks, but I think they know. It only makes sense for Marvel to be supervised by one entity. There shouldn't be two Marvels."

It sounds like the possibility of the "X-Men" franchise as we know it continuing is low. Based on Iger's comments, Disney will likely integrate the characters into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, which would reboot the franchise.

Variety reported this week that Disney is developing TV series spinning off of the MCU that would star Tom Hiddleston as Loki, Elizabeth Olsen as Scarlet Witch, and characters that haven't been introduced yet. Feige would have a "hands-on role" in the making of them.

A Scarlet Witch TV series suggests that Disney is already thinking of ways it can include X-Men characters into the MCU, as Scarlet Witch is the daughter of X-Men villain Magneto in the comics.

Iger's comments breathe further life into that likelihood. Maybe Wolverine, Storm, Cyclops, and others (or characters we haven't even seen in Fox's films) will soon be fighting side-by-side with the likes of the MCU's Spider-Man, Captain Marvel, Black Panther, and more.

Nintendo is bringing back its classic NES controller for the Switch, but now it's wireless — take a look

Nintendo Entertainment System

Nintendo's first major video game console, the Nintendo Entertainment System, once dominated the world of gaming.

The console's ubiquitous rectangular controller is iconic, and it still occupies a nostalgic place in the hearts of many. In 2018, the NES gamepad is coming back — and this time, it's wireless. There's good reason for that, as it's a controller designed for use with Nintendo's Switch!

Here's everything we know about Nintendo's modern update to a classic gamepad:

SEE ALSO: The Nintendo Switch online service costs $20 a year, granting access to classic games and long-awaited new features when it lights up on September 18

The only way to buy the NES wireless gamepad is by signing up for Nintendo's new, paid online service: Nintendo Switch Online.

What a twist!

It might sound crazy, but the only way to buy Nintendo's re-released NES gamepads is to first sign up for the new $20/year Nintendo Switch Online service.

There's a good reason for that: The only way to access NES classics on the Nintendo Switch is by signing up for Nintendo Switch Online. And what are you using the NES gamepad for on the Switch? For playing NES games, of course!

There are 20 games available thus far, and Nintendo's adding three additional games to a growing library each month. For now, it's just NES games — no Super Nintendo or Nintendo 64 or Game Boy, unfortunately.

You won't be able to play most Switch games with the NES gamepad — it simply doesn't have enough buttons.

Including the D-pad, Start, Select, A, B, and the ability to press A and B at the same time, there are only so many buttons on the NES gamepad. And for many Switch games, using the NES gamepad simply wouldn't translate — it doesn't have enough buttons!

And that's before we start talking about the fact that there are no analog thumbsticks.

There are two new buttons: L and R.

Since the NES gamepad for Switch charges by attaching to the Switch console itself, like the Joy-Con gamepads that come with the Switch, it uses the same connection rail as the normal Switch gamepads.

You can see it above — it's the black strip of plastic along the top of the gamepad, taking the place of the usual connection cable.

That rail comes with two new buttons: L and R. They're tiny, and wrapping your fingers around the hard angles of the NES gamepad to tap them isn't really workable while playing games. But the good news is that they exist solely as a means of accessing a Switch menu; you tap them both at the same time to access the menu while playing NES classics through Nintendo Switch Online.

13 songs you had no idea were written by Prince

prince

Prince died over two years ago, but his catalog of songs left an indelible mark on the music industry.

While he was making albums of his own, Prince, a prolific songwriter and musician, also wrote and produced songs for other artists. And some of them turned into major hits. There are also quite a few covers of Prince songs that became hits for other artists, like Cyndi Lauper, Sinead O'Connor, and Alicia Keys.

Prince often used a pen name in these collaborations with other artists to keep his own spotlight away from the songs.

Here are 13 songs by other artists that were actually written by Prince:

The Bangles — "Manic Monday" (1986)

Prince wrote "Manic Monday" for the '80s girl group The Bangles under the pen name "Christopher." The track peaked at No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1986.

Listen to the song here.

Sinead O'Connor — "Nothing Compares 2 U" (1990)

Prince wrote the original version of "Nothing Compares 2 U" for the eponymous 1985 album by The Family, a band signed to his Paisley Park Records label.

The song only became a hit five years later when Sinead O'Connor covered the ballad in 1990. O'Connor's version went platinum and topped the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart.

Listen to the song here.

Stevie Nicks — "Stand Back" (1983)

Nicks cowrote "Stand Back" with Prince, and she credited Prince's hit song "Little Red Corvette" as the inspiration for it. Nicks' song hit No. 5 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1983.

Ibiza is a world-famous partying hotspot, but I found an under-the-radar celeb haunt most normal people would never know about

Rihanna KateHudson Ibiza Spain Atzaro (36 of 36)

  • While Ibiza is known as a party capital of the world, many wealthy and famous head to the lesser-known pastoral north of the island to relax.
  • One of the most luxurious and secluded resorts on the island is Atzaró Hotel and Spa, an agrotourism resort where Rihanna, Shakira, and other celebs have stayed.
  • I recently spent the day at Atzaró to see what it's like to live like a popstar. The food was good, the drinks were strong, and the grounds were stunning.

The Spanish island of Ibiza is world-famous as a vacation and partying hotspot for the wealthy and the famous.

Every summer sees the usual influx of actors, billionaires, and models and their entourages flooding in for wild parties at the island's bumping clubs and beautiful beaches.

But what if you are looking for something a bit more secluded, classy, and chic? Ibiza has that, too.

Enter the Atzaró Hotel and Spa, an agrotourism resort hidden in the northern countryside of the island. Considered one of the more prestigious hotels on the island, the resort opened in 2004 after being converted from a 300-year-old traditional farmhouse into the lavish 10-acre estate and gardens it is now.

The hotel's hidden, serene location has made it a favorite of celebrities ranging from popstars Rihanna and Shakira to actress Kate Hudson, among others.

I recently visited Atzaró Hotel and Spa on a recent trip to Spain. Keep reading to see what it's like:

SEE ALSO: I stayed at Robert De Niro's ridiculously swanky new hotel in Ibiza — and it makes you feel like a celebrity, if you can afford it

DON'T MISS: I went on an epic road trip to find the best beach in 2018's hottest travel destination — and it did not disappoint

Getting to Atzaró is a bit of a schlep. Located near Santa Eularia des Riu in the north of the island, it was a 30-minute ride from Sant Antoni de Portmany, one of the major towns on the island. It's about the same distance from Ibiza Town.

The drive there was gorgeous. The ride revealed a lush, green countryside that I didn't even know existed on Ibiza. Located down a small country road, Atzaró is named after the mountain behind the property.

The property was originally a finca, or Spanish farmhouse, built some 300 years ago, that served as the family home of owner and CEO Victor Guasch.

Disney pops after revealing ESPN's new streaming service has reached 1 million subscribers (DIS)

  • ESPN+, the network's new streaming service, has hit 1 million subscribers, the network said Thursday.
  • Shares of Disney, ESPN's parent company, rose 1.7% following the announcement.
  • The streaming service is likely Disney's testing ground for its own over-the-top service when it pulls its content from competitors like Netflix next year.
  • Follow Disney's stock price in real-time here.

Less than five months after its launch, ESPN's paid streaming service has hit 1 million subscribers, the Disney-owned network said Thursday.

Shares of Disney rose 1.7% following the announcement.

"Reaching one million paid subscribers is an important milestone for any video subscription service, but reaching this benchmark in such a short amount of time is an incredible testament to the teams from DTCI and ESPN who have worked tirelessly to bring this product to market and continually improve it since our April launch," Kevin Meyer, Disney's head of direct-to-consumer efforts, said in a press release.

"We’re thrilled so many sports fans have quickly come to love the service. The future is bright and we believe growth will continue as we add features, distribution partners and more exclusive content in the coming months."

ESPN+ is available for $4.99 a month, or $49.99 annually, and has been conceived as an add-on channel to its current cable offerings of ESPN, ESPN 2 and ESPN Classic. Therefore, it lacks some of the major leagues those channels may have broadcast deals for, instead opting for other sports like soccer, hockey, swimming, and more. It's available on Apple TV, Roku, Chromecast, and others.

Powered by BAMtech, a service ESPN purchased from Major League Baseball, ESPN+ is widely seen as the precursor to any over-the-top offering from Disney. The company has said it hopes to yank its original content from other providers, like Netflix, next year in favor of its own.

If its bid to acquire 21st Century Fox is approved, Disney will have a much larger stake in the streaming service Hulu.

Disney is up 12.4% this year.

Cary Joji Fukunaga on directing the next James Bond movie: 'I'm just honored that they picked me'

Cary Fukunaga Eamonn M McCormack Getty final

  • Cary Joji Fukunaga was named the director of James Bond 25 on Thursday morning.
  • He talked to Business Insider that afternoon about getting the job.

It might have been the biggest morning of director Cary Joji Fukanaga's career, but it didn't seem that big a deal hours later on Thursday while doing press for his Netflix series, "Maniac," which launches on Friday. Lounging on an oversized chair at a hotel by Madison Square Park with his dog Eli, who he rescued while making "Maniac," Fukanaga didn't seem to have a care in the world.

So, at least on the outside, he's taking the news that he's the director of the yet-to-be-titled 25th James Bond movie in stride.

A tweet from the official 007 Twitter account went out in the early morning announcing that Fukunaga would be replacing Danny Boyle, who left the project a month ago over creative differences.

Production will begin on March 4, 2019, with a release date set for February 14, 2020.

"I don't know if I can comment on any of the process stuff," Fukanaga told Business Insider. "I can't talk about story, anything else. I'm just honored that they picked me."

Not only will the director, known for his incredible work on the first season of "True Detective" and Netflix's "Beasts of No Nation," now take the helm of one of the most treasured franchises of all time, but directing Bond means it will be the first time a movie of his gets a wide theatrical release.

And that's an aspect that he was willing to talk a little about.

"I love the theatrical experience," he said. "[Netflix CCO] Ted [Sarandos] was very generous in when we did 'Beasts of No Nation' in having a cinematic aspect of it, so that was awesome. But it's really hard to compete with day and date. It's not indicative, I think, of a real theatrical run."

Though Fukanaga was quick to end it there and go back to talking about "Maniac," you could see in his eyes that he can't wait to make something that will appear on the largest screens all over the world.

Amazon Fire TV Recast

Amazon on Thursday debuted the Fire TV Recast, Amazon's first antenna and DVR.

The Fire TV Recast will play and record live TV, and integrate directly into your Fire TV. It can also send recorded footage to your other devices.

Amazon says the device will allow you to "stream live TV anywhere from shows to local news, sports, and more from stations like ABC, CBS, FOX, NBC, PBS, and The CW."

The device contains two tuners and a 500 GB DVR, which will let you record up to two shows at once, but there's also a four-tuner, 1 terabyte DVR version that will cost more but offer more storage space and the ability to record up to four shows at once.

The device will start at $229.99 and will be available by the holidays.

Amazon Fire TV Recast

Here's how Amazon described the device on its website:

Fire TV Recast allows you to watch your favorite live TV content from anywhere. It is a companion DVR that lets you watch, record, and replay free over-the-air programming to any Fire TV, Echo Show, and on compatible Fire tablet and mobile devices. Stream live TV anywhere from shows to local news, sports, and more from stations like ABC, CBS, FOX, NBC, PBS, and The CW.

Fire TV Recast makes it easy to put video everywhere in your home. not just by your TV. We’ll help you find the right place for the device during setup – maybe the attic where you have the best reception – and then we’ll take care of the rest.

With Fire TV Recast, you can record up to two or four shows at once, and stream on any multiple devices at a time. Even over-the-air shows can go with you on-the-go.

Fire TV Recast is even better with Alexa – search for shows, browse recordings, change over-the-air live TV channels, control playback, and schedule, cancel, and delete recordings using just your voice.
