10 Actors' Dramatic Departures From Popular TV Shows

$

shannen doherty 90210

Charlie Sheen isn't the first major character to be axed from a hit show ("Two and a Half Men"), and there are others who (sometimes) ill-advisedly killed their own golden goose while their former show, despite dire predictions, went on.

Here are some memorable examples.

Shelly Long on "Cheers"

When Cheers debuted in 1982, one of the main continuing story threads was the love/hate relationship between wannabe-intellectual waitress Diane (Shelley Long) and retired athlete/bar owner Sam (Ted Danson). But behind the scenes, Long's relationship with not only Danson but the rest of the cast and crew of Cheers leaned more toward the "hate" side of the equation. Long was a perfectionist and, among other quirks, often held up taping for 45 minutes or more to have her hair and make-up redone (all the while, the studio audience was sitting and waiting).

After the box office success of her 1987 film Outrageous Fortune, Long decided to leave Cheers to pursue her movie career. Unbeknowst to critics and viewers who predicted certain death for the sitcom with the departure of such a major character, Long's departure actually relieved a good deal of on-set tension and virtually revitalized the cast and writers. Cheers ran for another very successful six seasons until Ted Danson finally decided to call it quits.

Ron Howard on "Happy Days"

Red-haired aw-shucks all-wholesome-American Ron Howard starred as Richie Cunningham on Happy Days for the first seven years of the long-running sitcom's 10 year run. Howard had been acting since the age of four, including a nine-year stint as Opie on The Andy Griffith Show.

Having spent most of his life on studio sets, he developed a serious interest in acting directing, and the respectable box office results of 1977's Grand Theft Auto, his directorial debut, further whetted his creative appetite. He was itching to stop playing a teenager and start pursuing his dream. Since virtually every Happy Days plot revolved around Richie, the producers were panicked when Howard gave his notice, so he agreed to return for a limited number of guest shots after his character joined the Army and was shipped off to Greenland.

Happy Days continued for another four seasons, but the changes wrought by Howard's departure were mind-boggling. Somehow Joanie, Chachi, Fonzie, et al., were magically transported 30 years into the future. Instead of a feel-good slice of 1950s nostalgia, viewers were treated to a barrage of Very Special Episodes (with formerly apolitical Fonzie suddenly solving the problem du jour—be it racism, single parenthood, or alcoholism—in 30 minutes) and featuring cast members who looked like they'd stepped out of an Izod ad rather than the Eisenhower era.

Of course, Howard hasn't done too badly for himself since hanging up his Jefferson High jacket...

Rob Lowe on "The West Wing"

When Rob Lowe first signed on to play Deputy Communications Director Sam Seaborn on The West Wing, he was considered the "box office draw" and was likewise given both top billing and the highest salary. But after the first season, the show started to gain critical acclaim and the supporting cast attracted more attention.

Once The West Wing became a bona fide ratings hit, supporting actors Allison Janney, Bradley Whitford, Richard Schiff, and John Spencer joined forces and demanded a sizable salary increase. The granted pay raise brought the quartet up to the same salary level as original "main" star Rob Lowe.

When Lowe asked for a raise, the producers refused him and, as Lowe later stated in his autobiography, he thought, "You know what? This is not right. It's just not right," so he called it quits in 2003. Despite his bitter departure, Lowe was still appreciative to the series' producers for essentially reviving his career (which had been in a slump after a notorious hotel sex video was made public) and he appeared in two parts of a four-episode story arc that served as the series finale in 2006.

A Toddler Dancing To 'Let's Go Crazy' On YouTube Sparked An Epic Legal Fight

Prince, Purple Rain

A closely watched copyright battle over a 29-second YouTube clip of a toddler dancing to the Prince hit "Let's Go Crazy" may be heading to trial soon, according to the Hollywood Reporter.

The toddler's mom, Stephanie Lenz, sued Universal in 2007 for allegedly sending a meritless "take down" request demanding the video be removed from YouTube.

After years of litigation, Judge Jeremy Fogel issued a ruling Thursday that refused to grant either side "summary judgment" on copyright issues -- meaning the case will likely go before a jury.

Lenz, who's represented by the free speech group the Electronic Frontier Foundation, says the YouTube video constituted "fair use" under federal copyright law. That is, she didn't need to get permission to post the video of her toddler dancing to "Let's Get Crazy," she says.

"I was really surprised and angry when I learned my video was removed," Lenz said in a statement on EFF's website. "Universal should not be using legal threats to try to prevent people from sharing home videos of their kids with family and friends."

Lenz scored a partial victory in this case in 2009, when Judge Fogel ruled that copyright holders must consider "fair use" before sending takedown notices, according to the Hollywood Reporter.

However, a jury still must decide whether the takedown could be justified through the Digitial Millennium Copyright Act, a 1998 law that gives websites like YouTube some protection from copyright lawsuits as long as they remove allegedly infringing content right away.

That law has sparked a lot of controversy over when it's appropriate for a big company to order the removal of certain videos from YouTube.

In the battle of Jessica Chastain versus Jennifer Lawrence at the Screen Actors Guild awards, it was the "Silver Linings Playbook" actress who took home the actor for her role as a recovering sex addict and widow.

And, Lawrence looked floored upon hearing the news.

As always, Lawrence had a quirky speech in tow. The first words out of her mouth? "I want to thank MTV."

Here's What Made Jennifer Lawrence's Dress Slip At The SAG Awards

If you were watching the Screen Actors Guild Awards, you may have noticed something odd when Jennifer Lawrence went to accept the award for Best Actress

Her dress visibly appeared to rip or slip revealing her thighs as she made her way to the stage.

Here's the GIF via Tumblr:

Many, including a few fashion sites, thought the dress may have ripped in half:

It seemed like everything was okay, since Lawrence smoothed the top part of her dress down, and accepted her award as if nothing ever occurred.

So, what was up with the dress?

It didn't rip.

If you take a closer look at Lawrence's Dior gown, it appears she was wearing an elaborate two piece.

jennifer lawrence SAG

According to E!, that's exactly what happened. Lawrence's Christian Dior Haute Couture dress was simply a layered gown and slipped when she took the stage:

"The original gown, which was revealed on the runway at a couture fashion show on Monday, showed clear distinctions that were connected by sheer lining. Lawrence's dress, however, had the lining hidden, so people couldn't really tell that it was a tiered gown."

Ashton Kutcher Was Hospitalized After Following Steve Jobs' Extreme Fruitarian Diet

jobs movie ashton kutcher josh gad

Christian Bale is rumored to have lived on coffee and one apple a day to achieve his emaciated physique in The Machinist. But not everyone is suited to unorthodox diets, as Ashton Kutcher discovered after adopting the late Steve Jobs's fruitarian regimen in preparation for a new biopic of the technology magnate.

Speaking at the premiere of Jobs at the Sundance film festival on Friday night, Kutcher revealed that he went to the hospital with pancreas problems after following a strict diet of fruit, nuts and seeds. Jobs, who was often reported to be a fruitarian, died of pancreatic cancer in October last year.

"First of all, the fruitarian diet can lead to, like, severe issues," Kutcher told USA Today. "I went to the hospital like two days before we started shooting the movie. I was like doubled over in pain. My pancreas levels were completely out of whack. It was really terrifying … considering everything."

Kutcher also revealed that he spent hundreds of hours studying tapes of Jobs in an effort to accurately replicate his hunched walk and mannerisms. The actor said that he felt close to the Apple founder as they shared a fascination for "tech space". He also revealed an admiration for his subject's ability to bounce back after periods of struggle.

"He's a guy that failed and got back on the horse," said Kutcher. "I think we can all sort of relate to that in some place in our life where we are moving forward with something and we fall down. You have to have the guts to get back up and go again. I think I share that as well."

Jobs, which covers the period from Apple's founding in a garage in Palo Alto, California to the launch of the iPod in 2001, has so far received a lukewarm response from critics. Variety's Justin Chang said Joshua Michael Stern's film "more or less embodies the sort of bland, go-with-the-flow creative thinking Jobs himself would have scorned", while CNET's Casey Newton was unimpressed by a movie in which "the viewer spends two hours watching cardboard cutouts lose arguments to Ashton Kutcher". Indiewire's Eric Kohn, however, praised "Kutcher's committed performance, certainly his most impressive turn in years, which conveys the character's focused, manipulative intentions in each calculated look".

Aaron Sorkin, the Oscar-winning writer of The Social Network, is planning a separate biopic based on Walter Isaacson's bestselling official biography of Jobs. Sorkin's version will reportedly comprise just three extended scenes, each capturing a point just before a vital product launch in order to portray Jobs and his biggest successes.

Victoria's Secret Has A Model-Casting Tactic That Sells Tons Of Underwear

victoria's secret fashion show 2012

Victoria's Secret sells so much underwear that it's the envy of the retail world.

And key to its success are its models, which fuel the retailer's famous fashion show and usually become celebrities in their own right.

While a casting director famously said that only a few women in the world would be suited to model for Victoria's Secret, a recent story reveals the role merchants play in selecting the women.

Victoria's Secret executives rely on one specific quality to sell underwear, Richard Habberley at DNA Model Management told Women's Wear Daily

“The merchants drive the decisions on the Angels. They [Victoria’s Secret] try the girls out, and certain girls sell product. They’re women that appeal to other women. And they’re special because they never appear in men’s magazines. Once you start to do that, they become threatening [to potential female customers],” said Habberley.

In other words, it's imperative that Victoria's Secret customers like the models it features.

It also sheds insight into why the retailer famously rejected Kate Upton. Her constant sexy pictorials and commercials are threatening to other women and would turn off potential customers.

Meanwhile, the top Victoria's Secret Angels are wives and mothers who are often photographed with their families.

Being a Victoria's Secret Angel also pays off for the models. Six of the top 10 highest-paid models have worked for the retailer.

“Becoming an Angel significantly increases a model’s earning potential due to their visibility around the world,” Habberly told WWD. “It changes the girls’ careers completely.”

The 7 Best Super Bowl Halftime Shows Of All Time

$
0
0

michael jackson superbowl halftime show

From Prince's 'Purple Rain' to U2's 'Where The Streets Have No Name,' the Super Bowl halftime show has been home to great performances by artists.

Here are our picks for the best. (They're in chronological order, not order of greatness.)

1. Michael Jackson (1993)

The singer performing as the halftime act caused audience numbers to go up during the show itself (the first time that had ever happened during the Super Bowl), causing Jackson's act to be often cited as the reason the Super Bowl tries to book big musical acts for the halftime show rather than the marching bands of yore.

When Jackson first appeared on the stage amid a flash of smoke, he stood dramatically silent and immobile for a full 1.5 minutes while many of the 98,000 at the Rose Bowl Stadium cheered.

During his performance, a chorus of more than 3,000 children from Los Angeles performed "We Are The World," and footage of Jackson being involved in charities was screened. Jackson sang "Billie Jean," "Black or White" and "Jam."

Arlen Kantarian, chief executive of halftime show producers Radio City Productions, remembered how Jackson was struck by the idea of the viewers who would be watching in other countries.

“He said, ‘Man, I’ll never tour there,’ ” Kantarian recalled in an article with the New York Times which detailed how Jackson's performance forever changed the halftime show. “We talked to him about the blue-collar football fan that might not otherwise be a Michael Jackson fan and about how he could build a new fan base. He got that as well.”

Bleacher Report writer Gordon Block ranked Jackson’s show as the best halftime show ever.

Super Bowl XXVII is the standard for all Super Bowl halftime shows, as the league called in the star power of Michael Jackson to keep audiences tuned in to the game,” Block wrote. “Jackson did not disappoint… Since that 1993 show, the halftime performance has become a huge part of the game and made the game much bigger than the sport of football. It's a cultural event and one that is almost impossible to miss.”

2. Aerosmith, Britney Spears, Mary J. Blige, Nelly, 'N Sync (2001)

The Super Bowl halftime show has often tried to book the artists who were leading the pop culture zeitgeist, and while some of them have put on great performances, others have stumbled. However, the 2001 combination of artists managed to be a perfect capsule of who was popular at the time as well as entertaining.

Aerosmith performed two solo numbers, "I Don't Want to Miss a Thing" and "Jaded," while 'N Sync chose "It's Gonna Be Me" and "Bye Bye Bye" for their numbers. The entire group sang Aerosmith's "Walk This Way" to close out the show.

3. U2 (2002)

The Irish band's performance was the first halftime show after the Sept. 11, 2001, and the performance included large backdrops onto which were projected the names of many of the victims who died in the attacks.

After the band performed "MLK," "Beautiful Day" and "Where the Streets Have No Name," frontman Bono revealed an American flag on the lining of his jacket. Many called it a stirring and respectful tribute.

No Amount Of Star Power Could Save 'Movie 43' From Bombing—Here's Your Box-Office Roundup

$
0
0

emma stone movie 43The raunchy trailers for "Movie 43" didn't help set it over the top at the box office this weekend. Instead, it may have helped steer audiences in the opposite direction.

The comedy composed of a bunch of shorts featuring more than 20 stars including Richard Gere, Halle Berry, Emma Stone, and Hugh Jackman followed three teens trying to find the most banned movie of all time.

Essentially, it looked like overly-stuffed celebrity films "Valentine's Day" or "New Year's Eve" (both of which fared much better at theaters opening weekend).

"Movie 43" wasn't the only new release in theaters to suffer from a poor opening.

Jennifer Lopez's return to theaters with Jason Statham in "Parker" didn't fare much better, leaving room for Jeremy Renner's "Hansel and Gretel" film to beat out both (though that may have been because of his "Avengers" star power as arrow-shooting Hawkeye).

Meanwhile, Weinstein Company films and Jessica Chastain continue to please while other Oscar-nominated films began to lose their appeal with audiences.

Out of the top ten this week include "The Hobbit" after seven weeks and Marlon Wayans' "A Haunted House."

Here are this weekend's winners and losers at the box office:

10. "Les Misérables" rounds out the top ten this week with $3.9 million. The foreign box office has helped bring the musical to $312.9 million worldwide at theaters.

9. Mark Wahlberg's "Broken City" dropped four spots in week two with $4 million.

8. Warner Brother's "Gangster Squad" is hurting. The film added another $4.2 million to it's paltry $39.6 million earnings in the U.S. In three weeks, the mob movie barely passed its estimated production budget of $60 million worldwide.

7. "Movie 43" featuring Halle Berry, Emma Stone, and practically every other celebrity under the sun bombed with $5 million. Director Peter Farrelly even admitted he didn't expect the film to get rave reviews. The film cost an estimated $6 million to produce.

6. Weinstein Company's "Django Unchained" may not have won over fans with its controversial dolls; however, the film is still going strong in week five with another $5 million. Quentin Tarantino's latest has brought in a total of $257.8 million worldwide.

5. Jennifer Lopez's last few films haven't been box-office gold ("The Back-up Plan" / "What to Expect When You're Expecting") and "Parker" was no different with $7 million. The film grossed less than star Jason Statham's "Safe" last year which debuted to $7.9 million.

4. "Zero Dark Thirty" dropped two spots earning $9.8 million. The Osama Bin Laden flick has now earned $77.6 million worldwide despite its controversial waterboarding scenes.

3. "Silver Linings Playbook" doesn't budge at all earning $10 million in week 11 bringing its worldwide total to $86.3 million. At this rate, the Oscar-nominated film starring Jennifer Lawrence and Bradley Cooper will hit $100 million worldwide in the next two weeks.

2. Jessica Chastain's "Mama" continues to deliver scares in week two with $12.9 million. The film took a big dip 54 percent dip in week two at theaters.

1. Jeremy Renner's Grimm fairytale "Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters" didn't bomb, opening at $19 million this weekend. It may be difficult for the "Avengers" star's latest flick to earn more than the film's estimated $50 million budget.

Kate Upton Just Passed A Major Milestone In The Fashion World

kate upton sam edelman

Kate Upton has publicly said that she wants to be more than a swimsuit model.

She proved she has what it takes to succeed in fashion with several Vogue editorials.

But now, Upton has passed another major milestone: her first major fashion campaign.

Upton is starring in a campaign for Sam Edelman shoes, a role previously held by couture model Charlotte Kemp Muhl, Women's Wear Daily reported

Advertising guru David Lipman, who ran the campaign, said he chose Upton for her curvy body.

"We chose Kate because she isn’t stick thin. She’s beautiful and all-American,” he told WWD.

Sam Edelman said Upton caught his eye because she was often photographed wearing a pair of his equestrian boots.

Upton told Vogue last year that she aspired to walk runways and do a "big, glamorous ad campaign."

But the 20-year-old has been snubbed by much of the industry. She's never walked a major runway campaign and was famously rejected by Victoria's Secret.

Why does much of the industry shun Upton?

Our theory is that like Kim Kardashian, the industry is turning a cold shoulder because it prefers waifish models to voluptuous, overtly sexy women.

But Upton's manager at IMG said he always believed in her potential.

"Kate’s only beginning to first realize the power that she has… A lot of products are now approaching us because she’s accessible and women are captivated by her. Last year it became very clear in my mind that she was a supermodel like Cindy Crawford," Ivan Bart told the New York Daily News.

According to reports, Bell and four other plaintiffs filed a lawsuit against L' Scorpion, a small tequila bar and lounge located in Los Angeles.

In July 2005, Bell invested $20,000 dollars into L'Scorpion.

Bell and the other investors were supposed to receive five-percent of the restaurants profits in trade for their investment — but Bell is claiming it never happened.

Since the bar's opening in 2006, it has reportedly made a modest profit of $30,000. However according to the lawsuit, Bell, and the others involved, do not believe they have recieved their fair share of that money.

Here's What J.J. Abrams Has To Say About Directing The New 'Star Wars'

$

j.j. abrams star wars

Late last week, it was revealed "Lost" producer J.J. Abrams would be the director of the new "Star Wars" film

The news came as a surprise since Abrams previously told outlets he turned down the gig, but Disney soon confirmed that the "Star Trek" director would indeed return us to a galaxy far, far away.

However, we'll have to keep guessing about the plot, because Abrams isn't giving away anything ... yet.

"It's obviously way too early to talk specifics," Abrams told E!. "But I'm excited to actually start it."

Though we still know virtually zero about the film, Abrams did tell The Huffington Post his ultimate goal for the film.

"I want to do the fans proud. I want to make sure the story is something that touches people. And we're just getting started. I'm very excited."

We wouldn't be surprised if we're in the dark for awhile. If the marketing for this film is anything like Abram's others ("Cloverfield," "Super 8"), we can expect it to be surrounded in mystery.

Lens flares aside, we can't wait to see what he can do since Abrams has said "Star Wars" is more his thing than "Star Trek."

And, so is George Lucas.

"I've consistently been impressed with J.J. as a filmmaker and storyteller," said Lucas. "He's an ideal choice to direct the new Star Wars film and the legacy couldn't be in better hands."

"Star Trek Into Darkness" comes out May 17 while "Star Wars" is set for theatrical release in 2015.

The Best Sports Movie You've Never Seen Is Called 'Warrior' — And It's On Netflix Streaming Right Now

$
0
0

warrior movie poster

"Warrior" is a movie about two estranged brothers on opposite sides of Pennsylvania who fight in an MMA competition.

I have no recollection of it coming out in the fall of 2011, and the fact that it's available to stream on Netflix (exactly zero new popular movies are on streaming) tells you that it's a pretty under the radar movie.

But it's great. I haven't liked a sports movie this much since "The Wrestler" in 2008. You should watch it.

What's remarkable about this movie is its ambitiousness.

It tries to marry two distinct styles of sports movies, 1) the gritty style of something like "The Wrestler" or the short-lived TV show Luck, and 2) the grand soft-focus style of something like "Rocky" or any traditional, big-budget sports movie.

"Warrior" moves back and forth between these two styles. You'll get a scene of long, mumble-y dialogue to map out the emotional dimensions of the characters, followed by a training montage that's straight out of "Rudy."

As a result the movie more or less gets away with every indulgent sports-movie cliche in the book.

There's a lot more to like:

The acting is great. Tom Hardy is in it, and Tom Hardy is awesome. Nick Nolte is also good as he growls his way through a performance as the two brothers' father.

It gets all the little things right. The little touches in this movie are great. The MMA stuff is accurate and they refuse to dumb it down in any way. The high school kids talk like high school kids. The fighters look, talk, and walk like fighters.

It's good. Watch it if you have Netflix.
