Avril Lavigne put her Bel-Air mansion on the market in May for $9.5 million, and just a few months later, newly traded Chris Paul scooped it up for $8.5 million.

Paul, who was recently traded to the Clippers from the Hornets, apparently fell in love with the home when he walked in.

Paul's new digs has more than 12,000 square feet of space, eight bedrooms, a pool, hot tub, a wine cellar, and a gym.

These Fake 'Vintage' Posters For Modern Movies Will Make You Ache For Hollywood's Golden Age

avatarDigital media designer Peter Stults created these stunning posters for modern movies in the style of ads from Hollywood's "Golden Age," when films were often promoted with paintings that depicted the stars or the action in a muralistic way that suggested a story or a narrative.

It was only in the late 1970s and early 1980s that the movie business largely abandoned painting for its advertising in favor of scene stills, photography and computer-generated imagery.

star warsPeople often forget that even as late as 1977, studios were still commissioning painted posters for their biggest hits. Both Jaws and Star Wars were advertised with hand-illustrated posters that would not have looked out of place on hoardings 50 years prior.

Stults is currently working in New York but was previously a social media and marketing manager at UC Santa Cruz. His Linkedin page shows he spent nearly three years as an assistant manager at Hollywood Video -- clearly the experience stuck with him.

Get your "two-step" on for Juliet, a 8-year old rocking out about her pet dog, Robert, and her stinky acquarium fish in "My First Hardcore Song."

Juliet teamed up with family friend and Australian producer Rob Sharpe to put out the YouTube hit that has gained more than 4.3 million views in just 24 hours. Trampoline jumping never looked so fun.

We watched some of her other videos, and guess what, the girl is multi-talented. She also plays the piano. We sense a sequel in sight.

Watch out Sofia Grace, looks like you have some competition.

Etta James

Music icon Etta James has passed away due to complications from the final stages of leukemia. At the age of 73, James was diagnosed with the blood cancer in 2010 and was also dealing with dementia and Hepatitis C when she was released from a California hospital recently to spend time with her family. She would have turned 74 on Wednesday, Jan. 25.

James is responsible for some of the most well-known songs of the last 60 years. Her cover of "At Last" was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 1999 and she was protrayed in the movie "Cadillac Records" by Beyonce.

She received six Grammys, including a Lifetime Achievement Award and several Blues Foundations awards. James has also been cited as an inspiration by multiple singers, including Adele and Christina Aguilera.

The legendary singer conquered several obstacles in her life. She overcame a heroine and painkiller addiction, fought through legal troubles, and battled obesity.

Struggles aside, James will most be remembered for producing some of the best jazz and soul ballads of all time.

AWESOME: Hedge Fund Movie Starring Richard Gere And Susan Sarandon To Debut At Sundance

Richard Gere

Hollywood movie stars Richard Gere and Susan Sarandon, who showed support for the Occupy Wall Street movement, are starring in a hedge fund movie called "Arbitrage."

The film, written and directed by Nicholas Jarecki, is debuting at the Sundance Film Festival this weekend.

Here's a description of the movie [via Sundance Film Guide].

"...Arbitrage—buying low and selling high—depends on a person’s ability to determine the true value of any given market. It’s a talent that has made billionaire hedge fund magnate Robert Miller the very portrait of success in American business. But on the eve of his sixtieth birthday, Miller finds himself desperately trying to sell his trading empire to a major bank before the extent of his fraud is discovered. When an unexpected bloody error challenges his perception of what things are worth, Miller finds that his business is not the only thing hanging in the balance."

Al Pacino was originally supposed to supposed to play the hedge fund manager instead of Gere.  Both Gere and Sarandon starred alongside each other in "Shall We Dance?"

Either way, we love post-financial crisis dramas and we're excited to see the film when it comes our way.

Apparently President Barack Obama's day-long stroll through New York City Thursday was for more than just fundraising.

His visit to the home of one of the New York Knicks' most famous fans, Spike Lee, included a very unique gift: a pair of yet-to-be-released Nike Air Jordan Spizike "Bordeaux" shoes in a special wooden box featuring the presidential seal and Michael Jordan's signature.

Not bad for a guy who also showed he can sing a little bit of Al Green better than most of us.

Here's a photo of the sweet custom-made box too:

American Idol Ratings Plummet: Here's The Worst-Case Scenario That Could End The Show

0
0

american idol judges steven tyler jennifer lopez randy jackson

"American Idol" is showing its age. The 11th season of the Fox TV hit got the lowest numbers in its history this Wednesday with a 17 percent drop in total viewership and a 24 percent drop in ratings from season 10's premiere.

Thursday's episode was even worse: It slipped another 20 percent from Wednesday's premiere and 28 percent from last year.

So what could be the reason? We have three possible explanations:

  1. The show is just old. In it's 11th season, what more can it really do to stay fresh?
  2. A slew of new reality singing competitions are chipping away at AI's fanbase (like "The Voice" and "The X Factor"). What's more exciting, seeing the same show over and over again or discovering a new way to find America's next singing sensation?
  3. Randy Jackson needs to go. What may have "American Idol" in the "dawg" house is one of its original elements. Randy Jackson has been with the show from day one and he's been known for catchphrases and losing a lot of weight. It's about time he changed his routine or made room for another new face.

After Simon Cowell left the show (and was followed by Ellen Degeneres and the firing of Kara DioGuardi), Steven Tyler and Jennifer Lopez turned out to be pretty decent replacements. The show was fun again -- Lopez provided experience and knowledge about singing while Tyler provided ... let's say "color commentary."

But Jackson stayed with his tired patter, such as, "You could sing the phonebook, dawg!" or "It wasn't for me, dawg." It's all so four seasons ago.

Maybe it's time the show's producers bring in a different music producer to take Jackson's seat. It would be interesting to bring a more hip producer a la Pharell Williams or Timbaland to the bunch so that the younger crowd will tune back in.

The other variable is Ryan Seacrest. If he decides to leave after this season there will be no familiar faces from its original incarnation. That could trigger the end of the show.

And that, in turn, would be a disaster for Fox because "Idol" still won the night in ratings and the network is heavily dependent on the $10 million it gets from Coca-Cola and other advertisers who want to buy ad space in and around the show.

10 Ridiculously Belated Movie Sequels That Took A Decade Or More To Arrive

0
0

Long-Belated-Movie-Sequels

Ah Hollywood. They try so hard to come up with new ideas to entertain the masses. Even if we get one or two good ones ("Inception," "Juno", most things by Quentin Tarantino), chances are everything else is rehashed.

Almost all of those are sequels. So when Hollywood is really feeling the pressure, in come the long belated sequels. You know, the ones that are released at least five years after their predecessors.

And with news of a "Bruce Almighty" sequel coming out (we're going to forget "Evan Almighty" happened), it's seems like a great time to go and revisit the films that were made years after the success of their predecessor. There are some really fantastic picks, but most haven't fared so well.

“American Reunion” (2012; 9 Years)

After “American Wedding”, it seemed an ill-fitted idea to return to the lives of Jim, Michelle, Stifler and the other "American Pie" members. But here they are, nine years later, for a high-school reunion.

Jim and Michelle are now married and have kids and the rest of the characters’ lives are a mystery. It does help that every single cast member is back for the film and the directors are the writers of the hilarious “Harold and Kumar Go to White Castle,” but we’re a bit skeptical.

“Men in Black III” (2012; 10 Years)

Whoever thought we would see the iconic J and K again after 10 years of working the secret division of the government known as the Men in Black? The plot here looks like it could go one of two ways -- either it’ll be ridiculously fun and action-packed like the first film, or it’ll be confusing and a misguided attempt to capitalize on a successful first film like the second film. In this movie, Will Smith’s Agent J learns that his trusty partner Agent K (Tommy Lee Jones) has been dead for several decades. J must learn what happened by going back in time to when Agent K was young -- enter Josh Brolin. Good casting and some potential humor make this an anticipated watch for our list.

“The X Files: I Want to Believe” (2008; 10 Years)

10 Years after the cult-success of the first “X Files” movie, creator Chris Carter was determined to make another one that would increase the legacy of his other-worldly show. Gillian Anderson and David Duchovny came back to plays sci-fi icons Scully and Mulder and Carter himself decided to helm the film.

What should have a been exciting and tense adventure- the plot involved a priest that had visions of grisly crimes- became difficult to understand and ridiculously dull. The only thing it had going for it was the remaining chemistry between its main stars.

Compare The Dogs From VW's Super Bowl Teaser To The Actual Star Wars Characters

ewok

Deciding to stick with the Star Wars theme, Volkswagen and Deutsch Los Angeles released a teaser for their Super Bowl ad Thursday. "The Bark Side" -- which after only one day has reached almost four million hits on YouTube -- features a cacophany of barking dogs, yelping the tune of "The Imperial March."

Click here to see how similar the dogs look to their characters>>

Although the creative team at Deutsch LA toyed with the idea of ditching Star Wars and starting from scratch, "Ultimately, we all came to the conclusion that to turn our backs on the equity we had built would have seemed strange," Michael Kadin and Mark Hunter, who helmed the creative, emailed to Business Insider. "We were very concerned about making the connection unexpected and surprising."

Well, they did a great job because if there's anything better than a little kid dressed up in a Darth Vader costume, it's a whole pack of dogs dressed up as the cast of Star Wars.According to Jeff Sweat, a spokesperson for Deutsch LA, the dogs were picked for their looks over the tonality of their barks.

We've created a slideshow that compares the cast dogs to their Star Wars characters, and they certainly look the part.

Our only critique: we really wish that there had been a puppy Jabba the Hutt.

Chewbacca: Gus -- Yorkshire terrier / Affenpinscher mix

Ewok: Affenpinscher / Yorkshire terrier / Terrier mix (this is a pure guess as he was a street dog)

C-3PO: Huck -- Podengo

Tucker Max Will No Longer Write 'Hilarious' Books

beer in hell tucker max

Tucker Max—the irreverant, politcally incorrect, borderline misogynist author of I Hope They Serve Beer In Hell—is calling it quits after writing just three books.

From an interview with Forbes (via Abnormal Returns):

And now, the man who can sell all those books shares in an exclusive with Forbes, he is retiring.

Not from writing—but from the “fratire” genre that made him famous in his first two books. After his third book Hilarity Ensues comes out in a few weeks, there will be no more like it coming from him.

“I never thought I would do that forever. There are many people who are envious of what I do, and they’re like, ‘you can’t do this forever’ blah-blah-blah. And I’m like, ‘Well who said I would?’ I mean, that’s like going up to Dirk Nowitzki and saying ‘Well, you’re not going to win NBA titles forever, so. . . ’ Of course he’s not. Nothing is forever. So why would the lifestyle I lead in my twenties be forever? I never thought it would be forever. It was what it was when it was.

“That’s why I’m retiring from writing more of these stories at the end of Hilarity Ensues. I publicly, explicitly retire. I want to be free to move on with my life, and I think the way I have to do that to set a public end to this.”

Max is often credited for creating a new literary genre which The New York Times dubbed as "fratire."

If you hadn't heard of him before, Max would be the first to tell you unapologetically just how successful he is as a writer.  From the same interview with Forbes:

“I’m so far up the power law curve of book sales, dude,” Tucker told me. ”The very tip-top are J.K. Rowling and Stephen King, Stephanie Meyer, James Patterson, and Paulo Coelho. People who sell tens or hundreds of millions of books. That’s just a different game. That’s like, the Bible. They’re competing with the Bible. I’m not in the Bible tier.” (I can hear the religious among readers thinking: thank goodness!)

“I’m on the tier below that. But still, on the power curve, I’m all the way at the tip. I’m on the same tier as Tim Ferriss or Chelsea Handler or Jeanette Walls—we’re in the 2, 3, 4 million range.”

Many will miss him.  And many won't.

Robert Redford Is Embarassed At How Much Swag They're Giving Away At Sundance

0

PARK CITY, Utah (AP) — Where there are celebrities, there is swag, and the Sundance Film Festival is no exception. Nearly a dozen gift suites opened their doors Friday afternoon along the city's Main Street.

Kate Bosworth, Andy Samberg, Emma Roberts and Rashida Jones are among the famous folks who stopped by the VEVO PowerStation SOREL Suite, where they could indulge in moisturizing facials and lip treatments from Fresh cosmetics and outfit their feet in snow-ready footwear.

"I think we belong here," said Kimberly Barta, global brand director for SOREL snow boots. "It just makes sense."

The company is also offering a 24-hour concierge service that will deliver boots around the clock to stars who can't stop by the suite.

At the Alive Expo Green Pavilion, guests could pick up natural skincare products and handmade handbags by Kenyan artisans from Tembo Trading Co.

The Bertolli Meal Soup Chalet served up bowls of hot soup and handed out sunglasses and Lumene skincare products to visitors. Joe Pastorkovich of Lumene said Sundance is the perfect place to introduce the European brand to an American audience.

"We're expanding into the U.S., and our brand connects well to Park City," he said. "It's a good fit because of the naturalness of the product, and we're unpretentious. This festival is about independent film, and we're an independent brand."

Italian shoe company Carlo Pazolini also exhibited (and gifted) its wares at the Sundance fest as a means of expanding its market reach.

"We're a European company launching in the U.S., so we wanted to get our name out there," company executive Jennifer Damiano said from the Miami Oasis suite, where she gave away high-end leather shoes and handbags. Guests at the suite were also treated to gluten-free snacks, hair styling by got2B, and cocktails from DiSaronno and Patron.

The Miami Oasis is just one part of the brand-heavy T-Mobile Village at the Lift, which includes McDonald's McCafe Lounge, the Puma Social Lounge and a temporary Tao nightclub.

Actress Blythe Danner stopped by the Fender Music Lodge, which offered live music and swag including Bear Paw boots and Park Lane jewelry.

Sundance sponsors HP, Acura, Chase Sapphire and the Sundance Channel also hosted suites along Main Street.

Alex Wilson, who produced the VEVO suite, said brands love Sundance because of the concentrated star power and media presence.

"In one location for five days, you can't get any bigger as far as names and exposure," he said. "With the heat of Park City, word travels fast."

And the number of branded suites keeps growing, too, much to the chagrin of Sundance Institute founder Robert Redford. He lamented that the success of the festival has attracted what he calls "leveragers" who muddle its mission of nurturing and celebrating independent film.

"They come in with their own agendas to use the festival to piggyback their agendas," he said. "It's a free country and there's nothing we can do about that ... but we have to work harder and harder to point to the fact that this is about the filmmakers. This is about their work and showing their work to you."

Many of the gift suites will close by Monday. The Sundance Film Festival continues through Jan. 29.

Hollywood Must Die

0
0

paul graham

One of the biggest startup advocators and investors, Paul Graham, doesn't like what he's seeing from Hollywood.

Graham founded Y Combinator, a startup incubator that has introduced some of today's biggest up-and-coming companies ilike Airbnb and Dropbox which are worth more than $1 billion each.

Graham has issued a call to arms for all startups: destroy Hollywood.

Here's why.

Hollywood, says Graham, is run by mean people who are so politically connected they can essentially control the governement.  Graham feels that because the movie industry is dying and the Internet industry is booming, Hollywood's elite are resorting to tactics like pushing the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA).

If you don't know what SOPA is, it's a bill that is currently under consideration.  It could be seriously detrimental to internet innovation.  It would enable the U.S. government to censor the Internet and shut down websites at will -- kind of like China.

So, Graham has issued a request for startups that will kill Hollywood. Here's the full request:

Hollywood appears to have peaked. If it were an ordinary industry (film cameras, say, or typewriters), it could look forward to a couple decades of peaceful decline. But this is not an ordinary industry. The people who run it are so mean and so politically connected that they could do a lot of damage to civil liberties and the world economy on the way down. It would therefore be a good thing if competitors hastened their demise.

That's one reason we want to fund startups that will compete with movies and TV, but not the main reason. The main reason we want to fund such startups is not to protect the world from more SOPAs, but because SOPA brought it to our attention that Hollywood is dying. They must be dying if they're resorting to such tactics. If movies and TV were growing rapidly, that growth would take up all their attention. When a striker is fouled in the penalty area, he doesn't stop as long as he still has control of the ball; it's only when he's beaten that he turns to appeal to the ref. SOPA shows Hollywood is beaten. And yet the audiences to be captured from movies and TV are still huge. There is a lot of potential energy to be liberated there.

How do you kill the movie and TV industries? Or more precisely (since at this level, technological progress is probably predetermined) what is going to kill them? Mostly not what they like to believe is killing them, filesharing. What's going to kill movies and TV is what's already killing them: better ways to entertain people. So the best way to approach this problem is to ask yourself: what are people going to do for fun in 20 years instead of what they do now?

There will be several answers, ranging from new ways to produce and distribute shows, through new media (e.g. games) that look a lot like shows but are more interactive, to things (e.g. social sites and apps) that have little in common with movies and TV except competing with them for finite audience attention. Some of the best ideas may initially look like they're serving the movie and TV industries. Microsoft seemed like a technology supplier to IBM before eating their lunch, and Google did the same thing to Yahoo.

It would be great if what people did instead of watching shows was exercise more and spend more time with their friends and families. Maybe they will. All other things being equal, we'd prefer to hear about ideas like that. But all other things are decidedly not equal. Whatever people are going to do for fun in 20 years is probably predetermined. Winning is more a matter of discovering it than making it happen. In this respect at least, you can't push history off its course. You can, however, accelerate it.

Jay-Z's Nightclub Gets Shut Down For A Ton Of Health Code Violations That Will Make You Puke

Jay-Z

A day after he hosted a lavish re-opening attended by stars like Spike Lee, The Roots and even Warren Buffett, Jay-Z's 40/40 club has been shut down by New York City health inspectors, the New York Post's Philip Messing and Kevin Fasick report.

The details of the violations are not pretty. According to the Post's sources:

An inspector found perishable food at dangerously warm temperatures inside the walk-in refrigerator and discovered “hot” food left out on the counter on Thursday, Health Department sources said.

A worker was also seen mixing salsa with his bare hands.

The refrigerator was at a rancid 60 degrees instead of 41 — jeopardizing the safety of 50 pounds of raw chicken wings, five pounds of raw shrimp and 100 turkey burgers, the sources said.

The club's restaurant has been closed and customers barred from entering.

A spokesman for the club said there “was no interruption in service or sales.”

But things could get worse. The health inspector cited 69 violation points, 28 more than are allowed for the worst 'C' grade. Those violations will be assessed at a hearing next month.
