People Are Up In Arms Over The Coachella Lineup

$
0
0

shouting, cheering, excited, fun, gov ball, Governors Ball 2012, Randall's Island, NYC, New York City, Festivals, Music, Live Performance, BI, DNG

The highly anticipated Coachella 2013 lineup was just announced and the people are not pleased.

While it was rumored the Rolling Stones (who played ten 50th anniversary shows in recent months) or Daft Punk would be headlining, instead the Red Hot Chili Peppers and lesser-known bands Blur, Phoenix, and the Stone Roses are taking top billing during the three-day festival.

Second tier acts include Jurassic 5, Vampire Weekend, Moby and Hot Chip -- what is this, 2009?

With no big name electronic dance music DJs like last year's David Guetta or Justice, no hologram cameos, and no Rolling Stones, this year's festival feels stale and seems to fall short.

Perhaps it has something to do with AEG, the festival's promoter, currently being up for sale for at least $8 billion.

It's also still unclear why, after what Rolling Stone calls "overwhelming evidence," the Rolling Stones were replaced by the Stone Roses.

"The Indio, California festival appeared on the band's [Rolling Stones] own official app in December under their tour dates section," reports Rolling Stone. "And festival organizers later used their official Facebook page to post a photo of a stone rolling on the Empire Polo Grounds, where Coachella is held."

But with or without the Stones, the show must go on, as they say.

Coachella kicks off on April 12th through April 14th and reprise the following weekend, April 19th through 21st.

Here's the official lineup from coachella.com, see the angry Twitter reactions below:

Bob Iger's Disney Paycheck Is 20% Larger Thanks To 'The Avengers' and 'Star Wars'

Bob Iger

Walt Disney CEO Bob Iger received a big raise for landing the Lucasfilm deal.

SEC filings show Iger received a 20 percent raise in 2012, totaling $40.2 million.

Last year, Iger's pay package was valued at $33.4 million, a 12.9 percent raise from the year before.

Here's a break down of Iger's board package:

  • The Mouse House CEO receives a base salary of $2.5 million
  • A performance-based cash bonus: $16.52 million
  • Stock and Stock Options: $17.3 million
  • Change in pension value: $3.1 million
  • $800,000 for airfare, security, and other perqs

In the release, Disney said 92 percent of Iger's package was based on the company's financial performance of the past year.

The board broke down how it calculates Iger's $16.5 million bonus. Basically, Iger received a big pay bump because of the success of a cruise ship, Cars Land in California, "The Avengers," and landing the Lucasfilm deal.

"70% of the bonus is formulaically determined by the Company’s performanceagainst four key financial measures approved by the Committee: operatingincome, adjusted earnings per share, after-tax free cash flow, and return oninvested capital, each determined as described on page 32. The Companydelivered excellent results in each of these measures in fiscal 2012.

30% of the bonus reflected the Committee’s assessment of Mr. Iger’s strong leadership and vision in driving the Company toward the attainment of many significant long-term strategic goals including the launch of a new cruise ship, the opening of Cars Land at Disney California Adventure, the launch of a Disney Channel in a number of key emerging markets, and the renewals of several long-term affiliate agreements for our industry-leading cable networks and ABC. During the year, the Company also released Marvel’s The Avengers, which became the 3rd-largest film of all time in global box office, demonstrating the significant long-term value created from the Marvel acquisition. Mr. Iger also led the Company’s negotiation to acquire Lucasfilm, which closed at the end of December."

There's no doubt Disney's doing more than fine at the moment.

The Lucasfilm purchase will result in the addition of at least three new Star Wars films

Disney's already powering ahead with "The Avengers 2" after the first film became the highest-grossing film of 2012 with more than $1 billion at theaters. (And, Disney needed that to make up for an expected $200 million write off on "John Carter" earlier last year.)

And, yes, even the parks are thriving. In Disney's Q4 earnings call, Iger and Chief Financial Officer Jay Rasulo said Cars Land in California helped the ailing California Adventure with a boost in ticket sales, two new areas opened in Hong Kong Disneyland, and the parks added the still-growing Fantasyland to Walt Disney World in March.

All of this led to the company stock jumping 33 percent last year.

The only segment of Iger's empire that wasn't rolling in the cash last year was Disney Interactive. (They laid off 50 jobs back in September following a decline in year-over-year revenue.)

However, even that's looking to make a turn around later this year after unveiling an ambitious gaming initiative earlier this month, Disney Infinity.

G.E. Loved Being Mocked On '30 Rock' So Much It's Making Ads About It [THE BRIEF]

Tina Fey 30 Rock

Good morning, AdLand. Here's what you need to know today:

In spite of the fact that "30 Rock" made mocking G.E. a staple portion of its show — Alec Baldwin's character is a General Electric loyalist — the major corporation has no hard feelings. In fact, G.E. loved the bits so much that it decided to create ads saluting "30 Rock" in its final weeks on television, both on air and on the show's site. Global director of brand management Linda Boff told Ad Age that "G.E. employees and G.E. executives have laughed for the last seven years along with the rest of the audience." The ads feature the company's favorite moments in the show.

MARC USA is Payless ShoeSource's new lead agency. It beat out The Richards Group for the account. Payless split with Martin/Williams last year.

Lee Jeans picked GSD&M as its agency of record. The Austin-based shop replaced Arnold.

Wheat Thins' TBWA-created ad involves a man versus yeti fight.

People are wondering if the Dell Dudecan actually save Dell.

AppNexus, an ad tech platform based in NYC, recently raised $75 million in a Series D round of funding.

Collective, a data-driven, multi-screen ad solution for brands, launched "Collective on Facebook" to help marketers coordinate advertising across screens.

Look At All The Clues To Mad Men Season 6 In These Gorgeous Black-And-White Stills

mad men

While you're waiting for "Mad Men" to return for a sixth season (there's a two-hour premiere on Sunday, April 7), AMC is teasing fans with these gorgeous, old-timey black-and-white photos of the cast in tuxedos and cocktail dresses.

Don't read too much into them -- they're publicity stills.

Nonetheless, it's tempting to look for clues and draw some conclusions ...

Peggy is back ... but she doesn't look happy about it. Peggy left Sterling Cooper Draper Pryce at the end of last season for a job at another agency.

Don Draper does not look happy with his wife, Megan. Judging by Megan's hairstyle in this shot, the show may have moved on to the 1970s. Creator Matthew Weiner previously said the new season would move forward in time. Sally is dressed like Jackie O. Could this formal occasion be the Nixon inauguration of 1973?

Joan is back! Phew! Also, note that Roger and Joan are both now single in season 6. In this photo they're standing next to each other. Does that mean they're finally going to get together? That would allow Roger to actually be the father to the baby Joan secretly had with him.

Matt Damon Kidnapped Jimmy Kimmel And Hosted His Show Last Night

matt damon jimmy kimmel

Matt Damon finally got the best of Jimmy Kimmel last night on his late show.

For years, the two have had a pretty lengthy (and hilarious) spat back and forth on Kimmel's Live show stemming from the host never having enough time to interview the actor on air

Over the years, the two have pulled a number of pranks on one another, often enlisting the powers of Hollywood stars.

Last night, Damon got his revenge when he hijacked the late show after kidnapping Kimmel. He replaced Guillermo with Andy Garcia, and invited a plethora of celebrities ranging from Gary Oldman and Amy Adams to make appearances on the show.

The result was hilarious.

Here are some of the best videos from last night's show.

Read The Original Deleted Ending To 'The Shining'

jack nicholson the shining

If you've seen "The Shining," you know the film (spoiler) ends with Jack Nicholson's demise looming over the haunted Overlook Hotel; however, that wasn't always the way the movie originally ended.

When the film first debuted it included an epilogue in a hospital where both Wendy and Danny went afterward to recover.

Co-screenwriter, Diane Johnson explained the original decision to include the scene:

"Kubrick felt that we should see them in the hospital so we would know that they were all right," said Johnson. "He had a soft spot for Wendy and Danny and thought that, at the end of a horror film, the audience should be reassured that everything was back to normal."

However, after Kubrick showed the film to former publicist for Warner Brothers, Julian Senior, right before its debut he said the original ending didn't work for him.

The scene was then removed right after the films release with all of the copies supposedly being destroyed.

If you're wondering how the scene played out "Toy Story 3" director Lee Unkrich hosts a site dedicated to the film, appropriately titled The Overlook Hotel, where he posted the script from the deleted scene.

Check it out below:

UPDATED: Here's Everything We Know About The Super Bowl Ad Lineup

$

kate upton mercedes benzAs the countdown begins for Super Bowl XLVII, it's time to focus on one of the most important parts of the game: The ads.

We're updating this post daily as news comes in, so keep checking back.

We might not know what teams are playing yet, but this is one of the most watched television events in the world, so there's already a pretty solid advertiser lineup.

These are the companies that shelled out $3.8 million for each 30-second time slot that will play to 111 million people.

From Kate Upton for Mercedes to Skechers famous French bull Mr. Quiggly, here's what you have to look forward to.

If you have any Super Bowl ad updates, email LStampler@businessinsider.com.

Anheuser-Busch InBev

The Budweiser parent company has a lot planned as the Super Bowl's exclusive beer advertiser.

A-B bought four and a half minutes of ad space — including the first commercial that will be seen in the entire game. Anomaly created two 30-second spots called "Coronation" and "Celebration" for A-B's newest, more alcoholic than average beer: Black Crown. See a photo from the ad here.

Translation made the next two 60-second spots for Bud Light, inspired by the Superstitions campaign from earlier this football season.

Then there will be a 30-second spot for Beck's Sapphire and a 60-second spot starring the Clydesdale horses.

A-B's VP of Marketing hinted to BI that there might be celebrities, but he didn't confirm or say who it would be. While previous outlets reported that Jay-Z would be making and starring in a spot, A-B told BI that that's not the case. Womp womp.

Audi of America (VW)

Audi is giving viewers three different options for its Super Bowl ad, and they can vote on what makes the game.  Audi says that the Venables, Bell and Partners is about a boy who "embarks on one of the most pivotal moments of his adolescence: prom night."

You can vote for the what you want to win here. Watch one of the options below:

Axe (Unilever)

Axe is another newcomer to the Super Bowl this year. BBH London will create a spot called "Lifeguard" that touts its newest — and strangest — endeavor: Axe is sending 22 regular people into outer space.

Although Axe has relied heavily on risqueé ads in which women jump men after one spritz of body spray, it has recently produced more complex work. It got attention for a spot in which Keifer Sutherland laments the one that got away (screenshot of ad on right). The press release reminds fans to follow Axe on Facebook and Twitter for more updates.

9 Films Everyone's Talking About At Sundance This Year

$
0

Scarlett Johansson Joseph Gordon Levitt DOn Jon's AddicitionThe Sundance Film Festival is underway, and reviews are pouring in for some of the major films exhibited — and the minor yet totally intriguing ones.

There are definitely others out there (the Pussy Riot documentary, the comedy from the writers of The Descendants), and there are still five full days of movie marathoning in Park City, Utah, but here's a breakdown of what the critics are liking... and not so much.

THE BEST: 'Before Midnight'

Julie Delpy and Ethan Hawke are back in what is perhaps the most indie trilogy of all time, and they are getting raves.

Slate says it's "nearly perfect." HitFix says audiences will see "how much greater it is than it should be." The Hollywood Reporter says it "retains a clarity of spirit undimmed by 18 years."

Yeah, no one is saying bad things about this movie:

Jesse and Celine are back and ready for you to fall in love with them again.

THE BEST: 'Fruitvale'

The dramatization of the true story of Oscar Grant, who was shot by a police officer in the Bay Area, has already been picked up by the Weinstein Company.

Indiewire calls it an "incredibly moving and confident first feature." Per HitFix, what the "film does so well, and when it is at its best, is when it fleshes out and defines the life lost, the father trying to put his life back together and the pain that came with his death."

The Hollywood Reporter uses that famous movie superlative "powerful." And it's never too early for Oscar talk in Park City.

THE BEST: 'Ain't Them Bodies Saints'

David Lowery's fim about outlaws starring Rooney Mara and Casey Affleck is Malick-y in a way that works, as Screen Daily says. Indiewire waxed rhapsodic, saying it "channels genre expectations into sheer poetry."

Update: This 'Scandalous' Never-Before-Seen Photo Of Princess Diana Just Sold For $18K

Princess Diana

Update: This rare photo of a young Princess Diana on a ski trip sold Thursday in an online auction to a real estate investor from San Diego for $18,306 — well above early estimates, according to the AP.

***

This story was initially published on 1/4/13

Apparently lounging on a male friend next to a bottle of Johnnie Walker pre-1980 is today equivalent to a nude photo scandal.

While Prince Harry was blasted by the media in August after naked photos of him partying in a Las Vegas hotel suite hit the web, turns out his late mother had been hiding a photo scandal of her own all these years.

That is, if you consider tame PDA a scandal.

A never-before-seen black and white photo showing "a young Diana lying in bed, with a young man seated behind her, and a bottle of Johnnie Walker sitting on the window sill" has just hit the public auction block.

The photo, which is marked with the words "Not to be published" handwritten on the front, was purchased by Britain's Daily Mirror on February 26, 1981 – just two days after the then-Diana Spencer was engaged to Prince Charles.

The photo, featuring an 18 or 19-year-old Diana with an unidentified man on a Swiss ski holiday, was kept hidden in the paper's archives until it was purchased seven years ago by the private Caren Archive.

"This would certainly not be in the way the Royal Family would have Diana to have been presented," said Eric Caren, owner of the Caren Archive, to the Daily Mail.

It is now set for auction by RR Auctions in New Hampshire, and is being described as an 8x10 "salacious teenage image of the future princess."

You can start your bidding at $200.

Former 'American Idol' Contestants Are Accusing The Show Of Being Racist

American Idol judges

Nine former contestants are claiming "American Idol" humiliates black contestants by publicly revealing they have an arrest record and then kicking them off the show to boost ratings.

New York attorney James Freeman has sent a letter to the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission asking for permission to sue the hit show on behalf of nine African-American contestants, the New York Daily News reported Friday.

Freeman claims the show has "NEVER once publicly disqualified a white or non-black American Idol contestant in the history of the eleven season production," according to TMZ.com, which obtained a copy of the letter.

While former contestant Jermaine Jones hasn't joined the proposed lawsuit, Freeman said the man's fate prompted him to begin legal proceedings.

Jones was kicked off the show in March 2012 after producers learned he didn't reveal he had been arrested twice in 2011 and had outstanding warrants, TMZ reported at the time.

Freeman alleges that if contestants tell "Idol" producers they have a criminal record, producers use private eyes to track the contestants and portray them as "violent criminals, liars and sexual deviants," the Daily News reported.

Freeman's clients are Corey Clark and Jaered Andrews, both from Season 2; Donnie Williams from Season 3; Thomas Daniels and Akron Watson, both from Season 6; Ju'Not Joyner from Season 8; Chris Golightly from Season 9; and twin brothers Terrell and Derrell Brittenum form Season 5.

Fox Broadcasting declined to comment on the legal action Friday, but a "Idol" Executive Producer Nigel Lythgoe called the allegations "ridiculous."

TMZ Lost Big Advertisers After Posting Video That Showed Teen's Murder

Harvey Levin

TMZ edited its video late Thursday night of a teenager's murder outside a Hollywood nightclub, as advertisers abandoned the gossip site and a Change.org petition gathered more than 200,000 signatures.

The nearly two-minute video showed dozens of clubgoers brawling in a parking lot before one man pulls out a handgun and fires two shots.

It then replayed the murder in slow motion, showing a man -- identified by TMZ and the victim's family as Andre Lowe -- in jeans and a black hoodie lying face down on the ground.

The edited video froze on the shooter for a few seconds at the end.

Jason Andrews, Lowe's uncle, started the Change.org petition last week, calling on advertisers to drop support from TMZ. Since then, about 25 brands -- including Chase, Toyota and Comedy Central -- have suspended their ad campaigns on the site's video page, according to a statement Friday morning from Andrews and Change.com.

There were no ads on the site's video page Friday morning.

"TMZ's sensationalistic coverage of a regular teenager's tragic murder added salt to the wound for our family," Andrews said in the statement.

The video was viewed thousands of times on TMZ and on its YouTube page in the 11 days before it was pared down the exclude the moment the alleged shooter pulled the trigger.

TMZ did not immediately respond to emails from TheWrap requesting comment.

The Los Angeles Times first reported on the re-editing of the video, following the online petition.

Watching The Biggest Loser Is Bad For You

Biggest Losers

We all know that it's unhealthy to be overweight or obese, but when does a TV show go too far in trying to promote health?

Recent studies about the show "The Biggest Loser" seem to indicate that the series has serious negative impacts not only on the participants but also those who watch it — all 7 million of them.

Yoni Freedhoff, a doctor at the University of Ottawa who recently went on an epic rant against the food industry, took a look at the science of the show over at US News. He points to several studies about the show:

  • The first in Obesity indicates that the show increases viewer's "hateful and negative" feelings towards obese people.
  • The second, in Health Communication, showed that viewers of the show have stronger beliefs that losing weight is totally up to a person's ability to control it.
  • Those same viewers were also less likely to want to exercise, according to the American Journal of Health Behavior.
  • A paper in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism showed that the extreme weight loss actually greatly slowed down the participants' metabolism, making it easier for them to regain weight

This last one seems to be the case for most of the participants, Freedhoff writes:

This may explain why, when I interviewed three alumni of the TV show, they reported that 85 to 90 percent of participants regain most, if not all, of the weight that they lose, and that those who keep it off are generally the participants who have turned their losses into careers as personal trainers or motivational speakers.

Sarah Palin Is Leaving Fox News

sarah palin fox news

After a three-year run as a paid contributor to the nation’s highest-rated cable news channel, Sarah Palin and FOX News have cut ties, according to a source close to the former Alaska governor.

“It’s my understanding that Gov. Palin was offered a contract by FOX, and she decided not to renew the arrangement,” the source close to Palin told RCP. “She remains focused on broadening her message of common-sense conservatism across the country and will be expanding her voice in the national discussion.”

The source declined to say whether Palin would pursue a television contract with another news network, such as CNN.

After resigning as governor in 2009, Palin became one of FOX News’ marquee on-air assets, appearing frequently across its programming and often generating headlines for her memorable and characteristically provocative commentary.

In 2010, FOX News constructed a studio inside Palin’s Wasilla, Alaska, home where her husband Todd would sometimes act as cameraman and producer during her live television appearances.

Palin’s relationship with FOX appeared to take several rocky turns. In a Facebook post during the Republican convention last August, for instance, the 2008 Republican vice-presidential nominee lamented that the news channel had “cancelled all my scheduled interviews tonight.”

A spokesperson for FOX did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Stella McCartney: There's This Elitism In Fashion That Always Felt Wrong

stella mccartney

Stella McCartney has made herself a big name in fashion, but when she first interacted with the industry, she felt turned off by it.

Fashion blogger Garance Doré at Pardon My French sat down with McCartney to talk about all sorts of things and the designer opened up about the elitism of luxury fashion.

"I aspired to this kind of glamorous world. You know, the moments I had contact with it, it didn't feel like it welcomed me," said McCartney.

Here's what she had to say:

"I don't know if it was just me or if maybe it was the case or has been the case in luxury, luxury fashion where there is this sense that, you know, you're not good enough to really be part of this brand. Or maybe you're not thin enough, or maybe you're not cool enough.

And I picked up on that. Maybe it's because I'm a woman too and you know I was a customer. I felt that a lot growing up in the Nineties and it really stuck with me anyway. And I just have never believed in that elitism. You know, it's just… it's always felt wrong to me."

Everything We Know So Far About Season 6 Of 'Mad Men'

$

mad men season 5

"Mad Men" fans, get your skinny ties and martini shakers ready: AMC's critically adored period drama will return on Sunday, April 7, with a special two-hour season premiere.

"To be able to continue exploring the stories of these characters for a sixth season is an amazing opportunity," said series creator Matt Weiner in a statement. "We love mining this world and look forward to bringing the audience stories that we hope will continue to both surprise and entertain them."

In the past, Weiner has been notoriously tight-lipped about Mad Men, which follows the dapper and somewhat enigmatic advertising executive Don Draper (Jon Hamm) throughout the 1960s — but a few details on the show's upcoming season have managed to slip out.

Here's what we know about Mad Men's sixth season so far.

1. Season 6 will be the series' penultimate season.

In an interview with The Daily Beast, Weiner confirmed that Mad Men will end after its seventh season, which means there are just 26 episodes left in the series.

But Weiner also stresses that season 6 will have its own distinct arc, even as he looks ahead to Mad Men's ultimate ending. "I never had the guarantee of even one more season for the first few seasons I did the show. So I would just use all the story I had," says Weiner. "And it's a much better way to do it."

2. At least some of the season premiere will be set in Hawaii.

The vast majority of Mad Men's narrative is set in New York. The season 6 premiere, however, will reportedly take Don and his wife, Megan (Jessica Pare), to the sandy beaches of Hawaii.

It remains unclear why the characters have embarked on a tropical vacation, but photos at The Huffington Postreveal that Don is still a smoker and that Megan enjoys fruity blue cocktails.

3. Peggy and Betty will be back.

Some fans and critics had speculated that Mad Men would continue without January Jones, who played Don's ex-wife, Betty, in a reduced role last season, or Elisabeth Moss, who left Sterling Cooper Draper Pryce for a new firm near the end of season 5.

But Weiner confirms that both actresses will be returning. "I can tell you their names are in the credits," says Weiner to TV Guide Magazine. "And none of the cast has been let go."
