Amber Heard

Actress Amber Heard is a Hollywood actress who is also the most recent ex of Tesla founder Elon Musk.

In a recent interview with Rolling Stone, Musk sounded like he was still pining after his ex, and concerned about the status of his love life.

I just broke up with my girlfriend," Musk said, according to Rolling Stone. "I was really in love, and it hurt bad...If I'm not in love, if I'm not with a long-term companion, I cannot be happy."

Who is Amber Heard, the actress that has the billionaire CEO so hung up?

Heard is only 31, but she has had quite a career and continues to take on bigger acting roles. In 2017, she appeared as Mera, the queen of Atlantis, in "Justice League," and she'll probably have a more substantial role in 2018's "Aquaman." She's also an advocate for women, especially those who are victims of domestic violence.

Heard was born in Austin, Texas, in 1986. When she was 17, she dropped out of high school and moved to Los Angeles to pursue an acting and modeling career.

Her first movie role was in the 2004 sports drama "Friday Night Lights," which starred Billy Bob Thornton. (It later became a TV show.)

Before that, she had supporting and guest-starring roles on teen dramas including "Jack & Bobby" and "The O.C."

Gal Gadot devised a unique system to deal with horrible morning sickness while shooting 'Justice League'

  • Gal Gadot became pregnant while shooting "Justice League" and had to deal with excruciating morning sickness.
  • Gadot had to throw up constantly between takes, and had her assistant stand by with a bucket.

Gal Gadot revealed on "Live with Kelly and Ryan" that she became pregnant during her last three months filming "Justice League," and devised a unique strategy to deal with her overwhelming morning sickness.

Gadot said that while shooting, she needed to "go and run and vomit somewhere" between every cut, so she had her assistant stand by with a bucket for her to throw up in between takes.

"So, I had an assistant with a bucket and she was to put other stuff in the bucket so other people thought that instead of having a bag she had a bucket," Gadot said.

Gadot also said that one time she was unable to make it to the restroom in her trailer, and was vomiting so loudly that her assistant started singing to mask the sound.

"It was so loud, I'm so sorry, this is disgusting. And she [sang], 'Aww Ah Ah,' so that no one could hear me," Gadot recalled.

Gadot thought she had been good at concealing her morning sickness on set, but said she later learned that everyone knew she had been throwing up constantly.

Meet Tony Robbins' 24/7 personal trainer, who helped turn Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson into a movie star

Tony Robbins is 57 years old but his schedule is as physically grueling as it's ever been. As the world's most famous life coach, Robbins is constantly traveling the world and averages 60 events annually. It's common for him to put in 16-hour workdays during one of his signature seminar events, and much of that time is spent jumping and running around a stage. This is where Billy Beck III comes in.

Robbins hired Beck as his full-time personal trainer four years ago, and Beck has helped him accommodate an increasingly busy schedule as he gets older.

Beck has his own gym in Florida, has twice won the Met-Rx Personal Trainer of the Year competition, and has had clients like Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson, NHL and NFL athletes, UFC fighters, and boxers.

Most of his time now, though, is spent traveling the world with Robbins to make sure he maintains his energy throughout his relentless schedule. Beck even bought a house near Robbins' main residence in Palm Beach, Florida, and has his own place next to Robbins' Fiji house.

Business Insider recently traveled to Robbins' Fiji resort Namale and spent several days with Robbins and Beck. And even though Robbins is Beck's client, it became obvious that the two are also great friends. Following is a transcript of the video.

Tony Robbins: Wow, look at the kind of animals that we have here in this forest! It's a lion!

[Meet Tony Robbins' personal trainer]

Billy Beck III: I'm Billy Beck III — trainer to a bunch of people, but in this episode, I am the exclusive trainer to Tony Robbins. We're in Namale. This is Tony's resort in the Fiji islands. This is my little sanctuary. This is where he hides me.

I've trained hundreds of professional athletes. When they come to see me, I take every factor that makes someone better physically, mentally, emotionally, and I make them a complete athlete.

[Beck travels the world with Robbins ...]

Beck: No one does more preparation than this man right here.

[... and it's clear they're best buddies]

Robbins: Yeah, Billy has a hard time having a good time. It's his most difficult situation. He was depressed when I met him. It was an amazing thing.

Beck: Yeah, you are amazing! I wasn't feeling good about myself.

Robbins: We have to figure out how to reverse that pattern. It's a little out of control.

Beck: By the time I was 13, I had to make a decision because I grew up in a trailer. I could either have a bed or a weight bench. So, I slept on a weight bench for three years. I didn't confine myself to exercise. I started studying nutrition. Then, I started looking at sports performance.

Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson – I was very blessed to be able to work with him. Worked for him like seven years or something like that. It was when he was looking to go from wrestling into movies.

Richard Feloni: How long have you been working with Tony?

Beck: Like four years?

Feloni: And you check in how often? A daily basis?

Robbins: Pretty much daily. Yeah. When we're at events, it's every day because he's there with me. When I'm on the road, it's not every day. But, we're dear friends also, so we're always connecting, communicating. But, it's constant. Yeah. He's really there because we're always adjusting things to what the environment demands from me.

Beck: He's on stage 12, 14, 16 hours, and he's completely immersed the entire time. My job is to actually stop him sometimes so I can refuel the tank. The level of technology and science that we employ to make him the best he can be is insane. We'll get an extra room in a hotel and bring a portable hyperbaric chamber. I mean, we do cryotherapy. We'll bring it with us. We do lab testing. I do genetic testing to determine what he actually needs more of, you know, from his DNA. So, we're never guessing. I don't like to guess. There's no reason to guess with the way we have technology now.

He pushed his body so hard for so long, that he got in debt with his body. He expended so much without replenishing it, that his body got really beat up. We've been able to correct a lot of this. In the last four years he's — like, this is the best shape he's ever been in.

Robbins: Billy!

Beck: Teamwork makes the dream work!

I see him do stuff all the time that people don't know about. He just loves people, and he hates to see people suffer, and like, if I wanted to be like anyone in the world, it would be like him.

A woman who accused 'The Ranch' star Danny Masterson of rape is calling out Netflix for still working with him

Danny Masterson

  • Four women have accused actor Danny Masterson of sexual assault, according to HuffPost.
  • Masterson currently stars opposite Ashton Kutcher on Netflix's "The Ranch," and both starred in "That '70s Show."
  • Despite the allegations, Netflix hasn't made any moves to suspend him or remove him from the show, like it did when accusations against stars Kevin Spacey and Louis C.K. surfaced.
  • One of Masterson's alleged victims is taking Netflix to task for its continued work with the actor.

Danny Masterson stars alongside Ashton Kutcher on Netflix's "The Ranch" and, according to HuffPost, four women have now accused him of sexual assault. But Netflix, so far, has not made any moves to remove Masterson from the show, and on Thursday one of his alleged victims called out the streaming giant for continuing its working relationship with the actor.

“Victims are taking back the power that was stolen from us, and things are going to change. Netflix should write that down," Chrissie Carnell Bixler, who alleged Masterson raped her, told The Daily Beast.

Allegations against Masterson first went public in March of this year, when reporter Tony Ortega published accusations and documents on his blog, The Underground Bunker. Documents in the post showed that the Los Angeles Police Department had been investigating Masterson, who is a Scientologist, for “at least three alleged cases of rape or sodomy of women who were also Scientologists and who claim they were pressured by the Church of Scientology not to contact police or go public with their accusations.”

The Church of Scientology has not responded to Business Insider's request for comment, but told The Daily Beast that it was "per se defamatory to accuse the Church of engaging in, fostering, or covering up criminal behavior."

In a statement in March, the LAPD confirmed to The Hollywood Reporter that it was conducting an investigation. The LAPD said that three women came forward and said that they were sexually assaulted by Masterson in the early 2000s, when he was a star on "That '70s Show."

In November, reporter Yashar Ali followed up in a piece for HuffPost and reported that four women had by then accused Masterson of raping them in the early 2000s. But according to Ali, the LAPD investigation, which started in 2016, had stalled.

Netflix's response to the 'Weinstein ripple effect'

Since The New York Times broke a story unearthing decades of sexual misconduct allegations against producer Harvey Weinstein in early October, more stories about powerful men in the film and television industry and beyond have circulated. These men include actor Kevin Spacey, who has been accused of sexual harassment by over half a dozen men, besides other allegations including that he began a sexual relationship with a 14-year-old boy. The wave of post-Weinstein accusations also include stories of comedian Louis C.K. masturbating in front of multiple women, which he confirmed were "true."

Masterson, Spacey, and Louis C.K. all worked with Netflix.

When the allegations against Spacey came out, Netflix suspended production on "House of Cards," and announced it would be rewriting the final season without his character, Frank Underwood. And after allegations against Louis C.K. came out, Netflix canceled his second stand-up special that was supposed to premiere exclusively on the streaming service.

But Netflix hasn't made any such moves since the allegations of sexual assault against Masterson have surfaced. Netflix did acknowledge the allegations, telling HuffPost, “We are aware of the allegations and the subsequent investigation, and will respond if developments occur.”

For Chrissie Carnell Bixler, that is not nearly enough.

She told The Daily Beast, “I was sick when I read Netflix’s statement on continuing with 'The Ranch' and continuing their working relationship with a man who has violently raped and abused so many women." Bixler also said that Netflix's inaction "feels like a continuation of how the Church of Scientology made me feel when I reported my rape to them, as well as how Danny Masterson made me feel when I would beg him for an apology, an explanation, anything."

In 2018, 20 more episodes of "The Ranch" are coming to Netflix.

Netflix told Business Insider that it does not have any further comment at this time. Representatives for Masterson have not responded to a request for comment.

  • Comcast, Verizon, and Disney have reportedly approached 21st Century Fox to buy some of its assets.
  • Disney had approached 21st Century Fox to discuss a purchase of its movie and TV studio and some cable networks, according to reports last week.
  • 21st Century Fox shares gained 6% after-hours on Thursday.

Comcast and Verizon have approached 21st Century Fox to buy at least part of the company, CNBC and The Wall Street Journal reported on Thursday.

The news comes about a week after CNBC reported that Disney was recently in talks to buy most of 21st Century Fox.

It signals that the three companies may engage in a bidding war for the $54-billion owner of the Fox News Channel. The reported offers come amid rating declines across many large cable networks as more consumers opt for cheaper and more customizable web-based services.

A deal with Disney would have further trimmed 21st Century Fox's assets into a more focused slate of news and sports networks to better compete in a changing media landscape, the report said. 21st Century spun off News Corp., its publishing business, in 2013.

The acquisition would have excluded Fox News because Disney cannot own two broadcast networks. Disney bought ABC in 1996. 21st Century Fox would reportedly have kept its sports channels to avoid the regulatory scrutiny that would come with a tie-up with ESPN.

Disney was reportedly interested in buying Fox assets including its studio division, partial ownership of the UK telecoms company Sky, and networks such as National Geographic and FX.

21st Century Fox shares jumped 6% in after-hours trading on the news, while Comcast rose 1%.

Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin, right, and his wife Louise Linton, hold up a sheet of new $1 bills, the first currency notes bearing his and U.S. Treasurer Jovita Carranza's signatures, Wednesday, Nov. 15, 2017,

  • Actress and model Louise Linton married US Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin this June.
  • Linton has gained attention due to public fights via her Instagram comments.
  • Most recently, she was the subject of criticism after a photo of her holding a sheet of newly printed $1 bills circulated on social media.

Louise Linton, wife of US Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin, was in the spotlight well before her involvement with Washington insiders.

An actress and model from Edinburgh, Scotland, Linton married Mnuchin in an extravagant ceremony in June. She most recently made headlines after she and Mnuchin were photographed holding up a sheet of freshly printed $1 bills. The photos drew attention and criticism on Twitter, as well as a write-up in the Styles section of The New York Times, which critiqued her all-black leather outfit.

Earlier this year she caused news when she published an Instagram photo that showed her and Mnuchin stepping off a government jet, adding the caption: "Great #daytrip to #Kentucky!" She tagged several high-end designers, including Tom Ford and Valentino, in the post. The resulting comments were less than charitable; Linton then bashed one commenter for being "adorably out of touch" and made her Instagram account private for a period of time. She has since made the account public again

But the jet photo and ensuing comments were not the first time Linton sparked a controversy. Below, see more about her life.

The new 'Star Wars' game temporarily removed the feature that caused a massive backlash (EA)

Star Wars Battlefront 2

  • Game publisher EA has temporarily removed microtransactions from "Star Wars Battlefront 2," the flagship new "Star Wars" game launching on Friday.
  • "Battlefront 2" was at the center of controversy this week, with fans outraged that they might have to spend real money on "loot crates" of random items just to see everything the game has to offer.
  • EA says the feature will return at a "later date"

EA has temporarily backed off a controversial plan that players feared would give those who paid real money an unfair advantage in "Star Wars Battlefront 2," the flagship new game in the franchise officially launching on Friday.

In a blog post on Thursday, the studio behind the game said the feature would be available at later date, after they had addressed the player concerns that led to a massive backlash earlier this week.

"The ability to purchase crystals in-game will become available at a later date, only after we’ve made changes to the game. We’ll share more details as we work through this," wrote DICE, the game developer on its official blog on Thursday.

Earlier this week, EA, the publisher of "Battlefront 2," faced a massive backlash on Reddit and social media over microtransactions. And EA's comment responding to the backlash became the most-disliked comment in Reddit history, with over 600,000 "downvoting" it.

The crux of the issue is that so-called "hero" characters, including Luke Skywalker, Princess Leia, and Darth Vader, require a certain amount of "credits," the main in-game currency, to unlock. In other words, if you want to be one of the main characters of the "Star Wars" series, you have to earn it.

While you earn small amounts of credits just by playing the game, the fastest way to acquire the currency is via "loot crates." A loot crate is a bundle of premium items, dispersed in a random bundle. And while you can earn them just by playing the game, players of the "Battlefront 2" beta complained that paying real money for them was the only efficient way to actually make progress without just grinding away for dozens of hours.

The notion that players would have to spend more money for loot crates, just to make progress in a game that they spent their $60 on, was a bridge too far for many players.

Star Wars Battlefront 2

"The intent is to provide players with a sense of pride and accomplishment for unlocking different heroes," wrote EA in its now-infamous Reddit comment. Following the Reddit backlash, EA announced that it was slashing the amount of credits it would take to unlock certain characters by as much as 75%.

That did little to quell the backlash. And so now, EA has taken out the ability to pay real money in "Star Wars Battlefront 2" altogether. Players logging in on Thursday night, amid the official launch, saw that the real-money options were removed.

It's not immediately clear how the removal of real-money payments will change "Battlefront 2." A representative for EA did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

'Mudbound' is the best movie Netflix has released so far — and you can watch it today

Mudbound 2 Steve Dietl Netflix final

  • Dee Rees' "Mudbound" is one of the best movies of the year.
  • It's also the best movie Netflix has released to date.
  • The ensemble cast is terrific, but Jason Mitchell proves he's one of the best up-and-coming actors working today.

Writer-director Dee Rees has been a shining star in the independent film world for years now, having given us movies like her striking debut feature “Pariah” in 2011, about a black Brooklyn teenager struggling with her gay identity, and the 2015 HBO biopic “Bessie,” about legendary blues artist Bessie Smith. But it’s her latest movie that will make her a known name in the mainstream.

“Mudbound,” which received high acclaim at this year’s Sundance Film Festival before being snatched up by Netflix for $12.5 million (it will play in theaters and be available on the site Friday), is a gripping work that looks at life on a rural Mississippi farm in post-World War II America. But it also contains themes of race and class that are sadly still very relevant in today’s world.

The movie is fueled by its perfect cast — which includes Carey Mulligan, Jason Mitchell, Jason Clarke, Garrett Hedlund, and Mary J. Blige — rich cinematography, and tender screenplay cowritten by Rees and Virgil Williams (adapted from the Hillary Jordan novel of the same name). It opens on a Mississippi farm with brothers Henry (Clarke) and Jamie (Hedlund) digging the grave for their recently departed father (Jonathan Banks) in the middle of a downpour. Jamie has cuts and bruises on his face, while Henry is conflicted about burying his father among the chains and bones of slaves they’ve uncovered while digging the deep grave.

We aren’t aware of the significance of any of these things, or why the black family in a carriage that Henry waves down to help with the burial looks so upset at him for asking. But in the next few hours it will all make sense.

“Mudbound” is a story about dreams that go unfulfilled, and how hatred that goes back generations can’t be mended by a single friendship. But mostly it’s about family: for one character it’s all he has, while for another it’s what he’s been trying to run from his whole life.

The two families the movie centers on are the McAllans and Jacksons. Henry McAllan, his new wife Laura (Mulligan), and his father Pappy (Banks) have all packed up and moved from the city to Mississippi to become farmers. Just down the road, Hap Jackson (Rob Morgan), his wife Florence (Blige), and their kids try to build a life of their own with their cotton crop, working on land McAllan owns.

Mudbound NetflixThis part of the movie is heightened by the work of character actor Rob Morgan, known best for his roles on Netflix shows “Luke Cage” and “Stranger Things." He plays Hap as a proud man struggling to make a better life for his family, though all he knows is back-breaking work on the farm. Preaching in a half-built church on Sundays, and then tending to his cotton the rest of the week, we feel his pain through his heartbreaking voiceovers. One touching voiceover on the worth of a deed — playing on the word's dual meaning as a "good deed" or a "deed" to land — is delivered in a way by Morgan that will leave you with goosebumps.

The story then shifts abroad to the family's boys battling in World War II. Jamie McAllan (Hedlund) is a pilot and Ronsel Jackson (Jason Mitchell) is a tank commander. Both see a lot of awful things, and lose buddies, but Ronsel also realizes that on the field of battle, and to those he’s liberating, the color of his skin means nothing.

Both come home to Mississippi and form an instant bond as they suffer from different forms of PTSD. But Ronsel also has to deal with racism as soon as he gets off the bus. Things get worse when Ronsel crosses paths with Pappy, leading to a riff between the families, and to Ronsel suddenly having a target on his back among the white supremacists in the area.

However, Jamie and Ronsel’s bond grows even stronger. The two sneak away to have mid-day drinks and talk about the war. Ronsel even reveals to Jamie that he’s learned that he has a child back in Germany from the woman he fell for over there.

But things turn bad when Pappy realizes Jamie and Ronsel have been hanging out, leading to the appearance of the Ku Klux Klan and some very tough scenes to watch.

Rees captures this time in America with an unforgiving eye, which is essential to the story.

And though the story is heavily an ensemble work, it’s Mitchell’s performance as Ronsel that shines through. He’s has already wowed us playing Easy-E in 2015’s “Straight Outta Compton,” but here Mitchell proves that he’s one of the best up-and-coming talents in Hollywood today. It honestly will be criminal if Mitchell doesn’t receive an Oscar nomination for his work in “Mudbound.”

Hopefully Netflix plays somewhat by the rules to give “Mudbound” a chance to be eligible for Oscar consideration because it is pound-for-pound the best movie Netflix has released so far in its existence.

The surprising 'prenups' of America's richest couples

$

mark zuckerberg priscilla chan

  • A prenuptial agreement (or prenup) is a legal agreement couples enter into before they get married.
  • Many involve what will happen to the couple's finances should they divorce.
  • However, relationship contracts, whether they be a prenup, postnup, or other agreement, can stipulate more than simply who gets what in case of a breakup.

Successful power couples agree upon important issues from the get go.

And whether it's with a legally-binding prenup, or postnup, or a more flexible relationship agreement, they often put it in writing.

"Two egos in a marriage can be great if all the important issues are agreed upon up front," Handel Group co-president and life coach Laurie Gerber previously told Business Insider.

While prenups are traditionally thought of as worst-case-scenario financial planning, relationship agreements aren't always all about the money.

Some of the most important issues couples should agree upon early on include sexual and romantic needs, family boundaries, and who pays for what, and putting it into writing can give a marriage a better chance of success.

Most breakups happen because of cheating, Gerber says: "Couples who face the reality of this threat head-on and deal with it stand the most chance of success."

"Don't be afraid to put it all in writing to refer back to as a living breathing document," she says. "And plan to have meetings about how you are running your marriage and family just as you would for your company or any other project you care about profoundly."

Here are some of the less conventional things successful power couples have put into writing:

Mark Zuckerberg and Priscilla Chan agreed to spend more time together

Before marrying in 2012, when Priscilla Chan moved to Palo Alto, California, she and Facebook CEO and founder Mark Zuckerberg drew up a relationship agreement.

In it, Zuckerberg agreed to take her on a date once a week and spend 100 minutes of alone time each week with her outside the office or his apartment.

The couple are worth an estimated $74.5 billion.

Jessica Biel and Justin Timberlake have a clause about cheating

Actors Jessica Biel and Justin Timberlake reportedly have an infidelity clause in their prenup that states Biel will receive $500,000 if Timberlake cheats.

The couple are worth an estimated $248 million

Nicole Kidman and Keith Urban agreed not to tolerate drug or alcohol abuse

Actress Nicole Kidman and singer songwriter Keith Urban reportedly signed a prenup stipulating that Urban, who struggled with alcoholism and cocaine abuse, would receive $600,000 a year for every year they are together, but only if Urban refrained from using illegal narcotics or drinks excessively.

The couple married in June 2006, and in October 2006 Urban checked into rehab for an alcohol addiction.

"Definitely we both met each other exactly at the right time," Urban told People magazine in 2007. "She said early on that she wanted to be brave with me. I feel there was something else at work, bringing us together and then just continuing to watch over us."

The couple are worth an estimated $205 million.

Quentin Tarantino's next film will be released by Sony following the Harvey Weinstein scandal

Quentin tarantino

  • Quentin Tarantino has decided to go with Sony for his next movie.
  • Previously he had only worked with Harvey Weinstein-owned companies Miramax and The Weinstein Company.
  • His ninth movie will be set in late 1960s Los Angeles.

After practically every movie studio in Hollywood tried to get his attention, Quentin Tarantino has decided where he will release his ninth feature.

Sony will be the home for the legendary writer-director's upcoming movie that's set in late 1960s Los Angeles.

Deadline reported the deal Friday, and Sony has confirmed the deal to Business Insider.

Though the director says it's not centered around Charles Manson, it seems it will touch on the Manson Family, and Tarantino is eyeing Margot Robbie to play starlet Sharon Tate, who was murdered by Manson's followers.

Other actor names floating around for the project include Tom Cruise, Brad Pitt, and Leonardo DiCaprio.

Outside of Disney, which reportedly wasn't interested, numerous studios and distributors tried to woo Tarantino, according to Deadline — from Fox, Universal, and Warner Bros. to Lionsgate and Annapurna. It seems Tarantino was impressed with Sony head Tom Rothman's film knowledge, according to Deadline. Tarantino is known for his encyclopedic knowledge of all things movies.

Sony is only the second company Tarantino has ever worked with to release his films in his career.

Harvey Weinstein Quentin tarantinoBefore this Tarantino, worked exclusively with Harvey and Bob Weinstein at Miramax and then The Weinstein Company. Miramax found its footing in the business after releasing Tarantino's second feature, "Reservoir Dogs" (Tarantino's debut, "My Best Friend's Birthday," never got a theatrical release), and then his follow-up, the mega-hit "Pulp Fiction." From then on Miramax was known as The House Quentin Built. When the brothers left Miramax and started The Weinstein Company in 2005, Tarantino followed and made more critically acclaimed movies like "Kill Bill" and "The Hateful Eight."

However, following the bombshell story of Harvey Weinstein's alleged sexual harassment and assault of women over decades, Harvey has fled the business and it's unknown if The Weinstein Company will survive.

Tarantino hopes to begin production on his yet untitled movie in Los Angeles by mid-2018, for a 2019 release.

The inside story of a bizarre Netflix documentary showing Jim Carrey in character as Andy Kaufman for 4 months, both on screen and off

Jim and Andy Francois Duhamel Netflix final

  • The Netflix documentary "Jim & Andy: The Great Beyond" is a behind-the-scenes look at Jim Carrey's journey to become Andy Kaufman in the movie "Man on the Moon."
  • Carrey was in character as Kaufman for the entire four-month shoot both on screen and off.
  • "Jim & Andy" director Chris Smith spent eight months editing the 100 hours of footage for the movie and two days interviewing Carrey about the experience.

It’s fitting that Spike Jonze would call documentary filmmaker Chris Smith to take on the task of sorting through 100 hours of footage of Jim Carrey, being in character as Andy Kaufman, throughout the filming of the 1999 movie “Man on the Moon.”

Smith has made a career looking at unique people and their passions. The movie that put him on the map was “American Movie,” which came out the same year as “Man on the Moon.” It gives an inside look at the often hilarious journey of an aspiring filmmaker named Mark Borchardt, as he tries to make a low budget horror movie. Then there’s the last movie Smith made, 2009’s “Collapse,” in which he profiles the controversial theories of police officer-turned-reporter Michael Ruppert

man on the moon universalAfter years of Jonze trying to convince his friend Carrey to show him some of the footage of him as Kaufman behind-the-scenes on “Man on the Moon,” he recently finally got a glimpse and was blown away.

That led to Jonze getting Vice, where he is the creative director, involved in producing it, and Smith to be the director in early 2016.

“Spike just called out of the blue and explained what the project was and I think to his credit it was really his enthusiasm that made it happen,” Smith told Business Insider over the phone this week. “I don’t know if I would have seen the potential the way that he did.”

Smith admitted he didn’t really know Jonze personally before the call, outside of running into him at events over the years, and through mutual friends. And he certainly didn’t run in the same circles as Carrey, as the director had taken a break from filmmaking the last five years, and spent most of his time on a farm in England. But the three got on the phone and after some chatting agreed that they all wanted team up to tell this story.

The role Carrey trained his whole life to play

At the time of shooting “Man on the Moon,” Carrey was one of the biggest movie stars in the world. He had one of most successful years any actor in Hollywood has ever had, with huge hits “Ace Ventura: Pet Detective,” “The Mask,” and “Dumb and Dumber” all opening in 1994. It instantly made Carrey an A-lister and led to roles in “Batman Forever,” “The Cable Guy,” and “Liar Liar.”

Turning to more serious fare by the end of the 1990s, like "The Truman Show," Carrey saw Kaufman as the role he’d been training his whole life to play. And he went all in. For the entire "Man on the Moon" shoot Carrey was in his Kaufman character on and off set. And it was all captured on a digital camera that followed him.

Jim and Andy Netflix finalThose moments included Carrey walking around as Kaufman’s most famous character, Latka, from the TV show “Taxi;” harassing professional wrestler Jerry Lawler when he came to set to film the scenes depicting Kaufman’s feud with him in the early ‘80s, when Kaufman would wrestle women; and being Kaufman’s vulgar alter ego Tony Clifton, who when Carrey was portraying him, would show up drunk on set. One time Carrey showed up to work on the back of a motorcycle with a group of Hell’s Angels, and even went to the offices of Steven Spielberg’s Amblin Entertainment one day, which is located on the Universal lot where “Man on the Moon” was made, and demanded to see the legendary director (Spielberg wasn’t there).

All this went on for the four-month shoot, while the movie’s director Milos Forman, and the cast that included Paul Giamatti and Danny DeVito (who worked with the real Kaufman on “Taxi”), looked on in shock.

After “Man on the Moon” wrapped, the footage of Carrey’s behind-the-scene antics, shot by Kaufman’s former girlfriend Lynne Margulies, went into the possession of Kaufman’s former writing partner Bob Zmuda. For over a decade the footage was just another Hollywood story brought up at parties.

Jonze wanted the legend to become available to all. He got Zmuda to license the footage to them, and Smith was handed a digitized version of the dozens of MiniDV tapes the footage was on.

When Jim Carrey says he wants to do something, who is going to stop him?

“We ended up working on the material for a good eight months before we did the interview with Jim,” Smith said. “There was a lot of talk about us interviewing everyone that was involved [on ‘Man on the Moon’], but I was really interested in just Jim’s perspective and what the toll this film took on him mentally.”

Smith’s end result is the entertaining and touching documentary “Jim & Andy: The Great Beyond — Featuring a Very Special, Contractually Obligated Mention of Tony Clifton,” which Netflix bought and will air beginning Friday.

Chris Smith Spike Jonze Jim Carrey Christopher Polk Getty finalThe movie is not just a look at Carrey at his most bizarre, but also a look at how Carrey’s rags-to-riches life before making it big in Hollywood was the perfect training to take on the Kaufman persona.

As Smith had hoped, there’s only one current-day interview, and it’s Carrey, who recounts the experience with a clarity and vulnerability that amazed Smith.

“We shot with Jim for two days,” he said. “It doesn’t seem like a lot of time, but there was so much because his insights were so far reaching. He articulates so well this idea of losing yourself for four months and wondering if you can really walk away from yourself and come back.”

Carrey admits in the movie that after playing Kaufman it took a while to for him to get back to being just Jim.

“That experience had a big impact on Jim,” Smith said, who was surprised when Carrey told him that he didn't miss anything from making “Man on the Moon.”

“I think there’s oddly a lot of life lessons in this movie and I think one of them is just this idea of not holding onto things from the past but actually moving forward,” he said.

But why go through all of this? Did Smith feel he got from Carrey exactly why he went through all this to portray Kaufman?

“I personally think he really tried to do justice to Andy’s legacy and I think he really felt that this was the right way to do that,” Smith said. “When Jim Carrey says he wants to do something, who is going to stop him?”

“Jim & Andy: The Great Beyond” is available now on Netflix.

The startup VidMob says it can quickly make ads for Snapchat — and it's raising money to help it take on ad agencies

  •  VidMob – a Task Rabbit for video ads and content - has raised $7.5 million in new funding.
  • The company helps marketers crank out lots of ads for Snapchat, Facebook and Instagram, often by using existing TV ads.
  • The firm promises it can make these ads much faster and cheaper than ad agencies.

Advertisers ideally need to make custom ads for Snapchat. But most don't have the assets or experience to make the kinds of 'vertical' mobile ads that do well on the platform.

Over the past year the startup VidMob has quickly carved out a niche promising to help marketers convert their existing TV and web ads into Snap-friendly formats in a manner of days – a lot faster and cheaper that ad agencies.

Now, the company has raised $7.5 million to accelerate its growth as it looks to further disrupt the ad production ecosystem. That series A funding round – which includes investors such as Manifest Investment Partners, Interlock Partners and Stampede Ventures, brings VidMob's total to $13 million since launching in 2015.

That amount of cash will hardly topple the existing global ad agency system. But it's another sign of an upstart tech company squeezing its way into the ad-making food chain.

vidmoblancVidMob is able to make short videos by tapping into a network of freelance editors and producers (think Task Rabbit for videos). The company initially focused on helping media companies like Meredith pump out more editorial video.

But once Snapchat's ad product opened up to a wide array of advertisers, the need arose for brands to churn out more 'native' Snapchat ads, and a constant flow of other ads types for other social platforms. VidMob soon became approved to make ads for Facebook, Instagram, and Pinterest in addition to Snapchat, while its network of editors developed expertise on each.

Alex Collmer, founder and CEO of VidMob said that the plan for the new funding is to hire more staff and build out VidMob's engineering and data prowess.

"We want to build out the production layer of the web," he said. "Everything on the web is all about timeliness, and instead of taking weeks to make these kids of ads we can do that in a day or two. Doing that with an agency is very far from being cost effective for most brands."

Stephen Colbert blasts Al Franken's initial apology after sexual misconduct allegation

  • Stephen Colbert slammed Senator Al Franken's apology to radio news anchor Leann Tweeden.
  • Tweeden accused Franken of groping her and kissing her without her consent during a USO tour in 2006.

Stephen Colbert called out Senator Al Franken's initial apology to radio news anchor Leann Tweeden — who accused him of sexually harassing her during a USO tour in 2006 — in his opening monologue on "The Late Show" Thursday night.

Colbert slammed Franken for saying that a photo he had taken with Tweeden (where she is asleep and he appears to be groping her) was "intended to be funny but wasn't."

“OK, ‘intended to be funny but wasn’t?'” Colbert said. “No, your movie ‘Stuart Saves His Family’ was intended to be funny but wasn’t. That photo was intended to embarrass her. That’s why he did it while she was asleep. Nobody goes up to their buddy when he’s awake and says, ‘Hey, can I draw a penis on your forehead?’”

In an article published on KABC radio's website, Tweeden accused Franken of aggressively kissing her without her consent during a rehearsal for a sketch on the USO tour. Tweeden also alleged that the senator groped her without her consent while she was asleep, and shared a photograph documenting the incident.

Franken has since released a second, lengthier statement, saying that when he looks at the photo of himself and Tweeden, he feels "disgusted" and that it was "completely inappropriate."

Franken has also asked that an ethics committee investigation be undertaken, and has said that he will happily cooperate.

Jay-Z blasts the 'absurdity' of Meek Mill's controversial prison sentence and the criminal justice system in NYT op-ed

jay z meek mill

  • Jay-Z wrote a New York Times op-ed on Friday protesting rapper Meek Mill's controversial prison sentence from last week.
  • Jay-Z has been one of Mill's most fervent supporters, previously calling the ruling "unjust and heavy-handed."
  • In the Times op-ed, Jay-Z calls probation "a trap" and highlights "the absurdity of the criminal justice system."

When rapper Meek Mill was sentenced to 2-4 years in prison last week for violating his probation, an outpouring of protest followed the controversial decision, with Jay-Z being one of Mill's most fervent supporters.

After calling Mill's sentence "unjust and heavy-handed" in a Facebook post last week, Jay-Z wrote an op-ed protesting Mill's sentence and the "absurdity of the criminal justice system" for The New York Times on Friday.

"What's happening to Meek Mill is just one example of how our criminal justice system entraps and harasses hundreds of thousands of black people every day," Jay-Z wrote. "I saw this up close when I was growing up in Brooklyn during the 1970s and 1980s. Instead of a second chance, probation ends up being a land mine, with a random misstep bringing consequences greater than the crime."

Mill was imprisoned last week following a sentencing from a Philadelphia judge, who Mill's attorney said showed an inappropriate "personal bias" in a "ridiculous" decision that the rapper's legal team is currently appealing.

In his Times op-ed, Jay-Z addresses how the two charges that violated Mill's probation were both either dropped or dismissed, and that neither Mill's probation officer nor the case prosecutor recommended that Mill be imprisoned.

He went on to use the specifics of Mill's case to paint a picture of injustice in the criminal justice system at large, including how black people are disproportionately imprisoned for probation or parole violations.

"Probation is a trap and we must fight for Meek and everyone else unjustly sent to prison," he wrote.

A 'Transparent' actress has accused its star Jeffrey Tambor of sexual misconduct — the second woman to come forward

  • Jeffrey Tambor, the star of Amazon TV series "Transparent," has been accused of sexual misconduct by two women.
  • Actress Tracy Lysette said that Tambor made inappropriate sexual comments, and thrust his body against hers without permission, on the set of "Transparent."
  • Both of Tambor's accusers are transgender women.
  • In a response to the second accusation, Tambor said he is difficult to work with and can express his opinions harshly, but says "I have never been a predator — ever."

Jeffrey Tambor stars in Amazon's award-winning TV series "Transparent" — as transgender woman Maura Pfefferman — and on Thursday an actress on the show accused him of sexual harassment and misconduct on set.

Tracy Lysette, who is openly transgender, is the second woman to come forward with an allegation of sexual misconduct against Tambor, who has won two Emmys for his role. The first woman to accuse Tambor was his former assistant, Van Barnes, who is also a transgender woman. Following Barnes' accusation, Amazon began an internal investigation into the matter.

Lysette plays a yoga teacher and friend of Maura's named Shea, and appears in season two's famous scene when Maura tries to say "yas queen" the right way.

Lysette told The Hollywood Reporter that when she arrived on set in full costume for the "yas queen" scene, Tambor said, "My God, Trace. I want to attack you sexually." Alexandra Billings, the other actor in the scene, heard Tambor's remark and confirmed the interaction to THR. Lysette said that she and Billings laughed off Tambor's remark "because it was so absurd."

Then, a few minutes later, according to Lysette, Tambor approached her. "He came in close," Lysette said. "Put his bare feet on top of mine so I could not move, leaned his body against me, and began quick, discreet thrust back and forth against my body. I felt his penis on my hip through his thin pajamas," Lysette told THR.

Lysette said that other people were around, but didn't notice because they were working. Lysette said that it was discreet, and could have looked like Tambor was giving her a hug. Lynette said she pushed Tambor away and rolled her eyes.

Since that day on set, Lysette said it's been difficult. "One minute Jeffrey is lovely, the next it's a temper tantrum or flirtation." Lysette also recalled an exchange later into production on season two. Tambor set up a meeting with his manager for potential representation. When Lysette thanked him, she said that Tambor said, "Well, yeah Trace. I really believe in you. And you know what? I don't even want to have sex with you."

Barnes and Lysette said that they approached producers of "Transparent" about Tambor's behavior, but they claim none took action.

Tambor denied that he was a "predator" in a statement to THR.

"I can be volatile and ill-tempered, and too often I express my opinions harshly and without tact," Tambor said. "But I have never been a predator — ever. I am deeply sorry if any action of mine was ever misinterpreted by anyone as being sexually aggressive or if I ever offended or hurt anyone." (Full statement here.)

Business Insider has reached out to Tambor's representation for further comment, but has not gotten a response at this time. An Amazon spokesperson told THR, "This information will be added to our ongoing conversation."

  • MoviePass is offering a limited time one-year subscription plan of $89.95.
  • That's $7.50 a month, less than the average ticket price ($8.93).
  • The number of subscribers using the startup since the $9.95-a-month price change in August has hit 600,000.

MoviePass is not letting up on disrupting the movie theater ecosystem.

The startup has announced an annual subscription plan that's hard to beat.

For a limited time a one-year subscription to MoviePass will only cost $89.95 ($6.55 processing fee included). If you do the math, that's $7.50 a month. The average domestic movie ticket is currently $8.93. That's quite a deal.

Existing MoviePass members will save 25% on their current $9.95 a month plan if they switch.

MoviePass, backed by Helios and Matheson Analytics, Inc., has been a hot topic in the movie business since August when it announced it was dropping its monthly subscription plan, which allows its members to see one movie per day, to under $10 a month. AMC, the largest theater chain in the world, has been trying to find a way to block the service at its theaters since August.

Though there have been complaints since the end of the summer by customers about the wait time to get membership cards, and how long it takes to get reimbursed if you have to pay for a ticket out-of-pocket (Business Insider has looked into a few of these complaints and found — though it takes a frustrating long time — people have been getting cards and reimbursed), MoviePass has seen its subscription number hit 600,000 since the price change.

The new 'Star Wars' game is embroiled in controversy, and fans are furious — here's what's going on

$

A gorgeous new "Star Wars" game launches today on Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC. It's called "Star Wars Battlefront 2." Perhaps you've heard about it?

Star Wars Battlefront II

In it, you can play as over a dozen iconic "Star Wars" characters, in major "Star Wars" locations, doing "Star Wars" things like using The Force and piloting the Millennium Falcon. It's even got an original story, bridging the events of "Return of the Jedi" and "The Force Awakens."

Unfortunately, all fans are talking about is why you shouldn't buy it. One of the top posts on the game's Reddit page on Friday morning was, "Target Employee here. We haven’t sold a single copy of Battlefront II. Keep it up!"

The situation is complicated and messy — here's what's going on.

SEE ALSO: Fans are outraged by the new 'Star Wars' game

Problems started long before the game's release.

Though "Battlefront 2" just launched on November 17, there were several opportunities for fans to play the game before that. A beta of the game was available in October, which enabled anyone to try the game's multiplayer section.

Overshadowing the game itself, which consists of first-person shooting and spaceship dogfighting, was the way "Battlefront 2" implemented so-called "loot boxes." Players were able to buy in-game currency ("crystals") that could be used on in-game loot boxes; these boxes contain a random smattering of items that can be used in the game, from character enhancements to other forms of in-game currency.

What people took issue with were the character enhancements. By putting items in the loot boxes that impacted gameplay, the game's developers unbalanced gameplay in favor of people who were willing to spend more money. This is known as "pay to win" among gaming fans.

The game's loot-box system was altered in response to complaints from the beta — but not enough.

When the beta ended, EA told fans it would address complaints with the loot crate system before the game's soft launch in mid-November.

But when the game arrived through EA's Early Access system on the Xbox One in mid-November, the loot system hadn't changed much at all. You could still pay real money for access to enhancements that would otherwise take dozens of hours to unlock by playing the game.

Meanwhile, you were playing against people who could easily defeat you with stronger weapons, faster movement, and more health — people who were willing to pay more money on top of the $60 price of the game.

On top of that, a number of major "Star Wars" characters — including Princess Leia, Luke Skywalker, and Darth Vader — weren't unlocked from the start of the game.

Characters like Luke Skywalker, Darth Vader, and Princess Leia — so-called hero characters in the game's multiplayer mode — require in-game credits to be unlocked.
