Everything we know about the Xbox One X, the $500 game console Microsoft says is the 'most powerful' ever

xbox one x

Microsoft has a brand new game console called the Xbox One X. All that “Project Scorpio” talk you might have heard months ago? This is that, without the code words.

And on Sunday, Microsoft said the first Xbox One X units were up for pre-order in the form of a early "Project Scorpio Edition" version of the console.

Microsoft is touting the new device as “the world’s most powerful console.” Based on what we know about its internal specs, Microsoft probably isn’t wrong!

But since this kind of iterative release is a bit nontraditional for game consoles, you probably have questions about what exactly this new Xbox is, and where it fits into the larger gaming market.

We're here to help! Here’s what to know about the Xbox One X:

SEE ALSO: I got an early look at Microsoft's new Xbox One X in action, and I was not blown away

The Xbox One X is, fundamentally, another Xbox One.

This is not a “next-generation” device like the leap from the Xbox 360 to the Xbox One.

Instead, it’s more like Microsoft’s version of Sony's PlayStation 4 Pro — it takes the existing Xbox One and makes it more powerful.

That means it plays all the same games you can play on the original Xbox One and Xbox One S. There is no deviation in any of the three devices’ game libraries.

In other words, there are no games that are exclusive to the Xbox One X. If you’d prefer the cheaper Xbox One S, you won’t miss out on that next "Halo," "Forza," or whatever else.

At the same time, this means a good chunk of the games from companies other than Microsoft will still be available on the PlayStation 4 and other platforms as well.

Also worth noting: Like the other Xbox One consoles, the One X will be "backwards compatible" with select older games from the Xbox 360 and, soon, original Xbox

That said, Microsoft is promising that games on the Xbox One X will look and run better than they will on other Xbox One devices, provided that those games are built with the Xbox One X’s extra horsepower in mind.

Everything we know about the flaming swords on 'Game of Thrones'

$
0
0

Screen Shot 2017 08 21 at 10.47.21 AMWarning: Minor "Game of Thrones" spoilers if you have not seen the episode "Beyond the Wall" yet.

Beric Dondarrion, the eye-patch-sporting leader of the Brotherhood Without Banners, made use of his flaming sword on the most recent episode of "Game of Thrones" — fighting off wights, White Walkers, and even a horrifying wight polar bear.

Beric first utilizes a flaming sword in season three, episode five, when he fights Sandor "The Hound" Clegane for his wrongful killing of Mycah the butcher boy. Thoros, co-leader of the Brotherhood and a red priest who serves the Lord of Light, says a prayer to the Lord of Light before cutting Beric's hand with a sword. Beric then touches his sword with his bloody hand causing it to burst into flames.

The same prayer and cutting ritual isn't employed in the latest episode of "Game of Thrones;" Beric merely waves his hand over the sword to get it to light this time.

The inconsistencies in getting these swords to flame poses the question: How do these flaming swords actually work?

The explanation for how Beric's sword is ignited into flames remains unclear.

There's no solid explanation for how or why Beric and Thoros are able make swords flame in the series, but in George R.R. Martin's third book in the "Game of Thrones" series, "A Storm of Swords," Gendry insinuates that the flaming swords are just a trick.

“'It’s only a trick, I told you. The wildfire ruins the steel. My master sold Thoros a new sword after every tourney. Every time they would have a fight about the price.' Gendry hung the tongs back up and took down the heavy hammer."

The flaming sword has a strong connection to the Azor Ahai prophecy.

According to the Azor Ahai, or The Prince Who Was Promised prophecy, a prince destined to chase away "darkness" is said to wield a flaming sword called the Lightbringer.

In season two, episode one, when Melissandre is still convinced that Stannis Baratheon is the Azor Ahai, she has him pull a flaming sword off of a burning idol during the burning of the seven on the beach of Dragonstone. In Martin's second book, "A Clash of Kings," Melissandre talks about Azor Ahai, and the significance of the Lightbringer sword.

Melissandre said:

"In ancient books of Asshai it is written that there will come a day after a long summer when the stars bleed and the cold breath of darkness falls heavy on the world. In this dread hour a warrior shall draw from the fire a burning sword. And that sword shall be Lightbringer, the Red Sword of Heroes, and he who clasps it shall be Azor Ahai come again, and darkness shall flee before him."

While none of this really offers up a deeper understanding of how the flaming swords work, it does reveal how significant flaming swords are in "Game of Thrones" lore.

'Dirty Dancing' premiered 30 years ago today — I visited the hotel where it was filmed and found a depressing tourist trap

dirty dancing

First, I have to confess that I am a huge "Dirty Dancing" fan. Despite being born seven years after the movie's premiere on this day in 1987, I have loved the movie for as long as I can remember.

Thanks to my mom, I know most of the classic lines ("I carried a watermelon"), can sing all of the songs ("She's Like the Wind" and "Hungry Eyes") and have even re-enacted the iconic lift.

On a recent road trip through Virginia with my family, my mom and I decided to stop at the Mountain Lake Lodge, the Pembroke hotel where the movie was filmed.

Mountain Lake Lodge is proud of its 15 minutes of fame as Kellerman's, from the spot where "nobody puts Baby in a corner" to the specific cabin where Baby and her family stay. But one pivotal part of that fame is now missing: the lake. Due to a naturally occurring phenomenon, the lake is now completely dry.

Mountain Lake Lodge still has several "Dirty Dancing"-themed weekends throughout the year. The next one is August 25-27, the weekend of its 30-year anniversary. The weekend includes a walking movie tour (like the one my family and I did), dancing lessons, a scavenger hunt, and a Saturday night party. Thousands of fans make a pilgrimage to the set to see remnants of the '80s movie that became a cult classic.

Despite our excitement on the seven-mile drive up the side of a mountain, the "Dirty Dancing" set was something of a letdown. Here's what it was like to walk back in time to the "Dirty Dancing" set:

SEE ALSO: We visited the controversial, award-winning Trump Winery in Charlottesville— and it was completely different from what we expected

At first glance on the drive in, Mountain Lake Lodge makes you feel like you're back in 1987, pulling up to the Kellerman's of "Dirty Dancing."

Aside from having fewer people and the addition of a screen around the porch, Mountain Lake Lodge looks almost exactly the same as it did for filming.

Next to the visitor parking lot, a small cabin is filled with newspaper clippings, memorabilia, and a guided map for "Dirty Dancing" fans to take a walking tour of the grounds.

The first stop was the front of the hotel, which we saw as we drove in — the same view the Houseman family sees from their car in the movie. By the second stop, it already felt like Mountain Lake Lodge was scrounging for memories.

Nintendo is about to release a miniature version of the original SNES — here's everything we know about it

Super NES Classic Edition

That smell of teen spirit and Nickelodeon slime isn't just you — the '90s are cool again. Look no further than the adorably angular Super Nintendo console above for confirmation of that fact.

Nintendo isn't going so far as straight up rereleasing the original SNES console, but it has instead created a new device called the SNES Classic Edition. We're just a few weeks away from the console's release, so we compiled everything we know about it in our Trapper Keeper — then published our findings below.

SEE ALSO: You can finally buy Nintendo's new $80 mini Super Nintendo later this month

DON'T MISS: It looks as if Nintendo's making a miniature, inexpensive version of the original Nintendo 64 console

As hinted above, the SNES Classic Edition is smaller than the original Super Nintendo. Here's the original SNES — the console is much larger than the gamepad.

By contrast, the SNES Classic Edition is minuscule. The game pad is far larger than the console, which is adorable and hilarious. The console fits in the palm of your hand.

Don't be fooled by the look of it, though. The SNES Classic Edition doesn't function anything like the original SNES. You can't put cartridges in it, nor can you plug original game pads into the ports on the front.

Controllers plugged into the front ports of the original Super Nintendo console, and game cartridges went into the slot on top. The blue sliders controlled power and resetting the console, and the gray lever in the middle ejected games. It now seems pretty low-tech.

The 24 most gruesome 'Game of Thrones' deaths, ranked

Game of Thrones

Warning: spoilers for "Game of Thrones" season seven, all the way up to the most recent episode, "Eastwatch." Read at your own risk.

Westeros is a brutal place, and you're pretty much considered lucky if you don't die in an incredibly brutal fashion.

With even more deaths happening in season seven, we looked back on all the most brutal deaths the show has pulled off so far, so you can fondly remember some very painful memories of lovable characters gone too soon. And so you can relive some of the most satisfying deaths of the worst villains the show has to offer.

Here are the most gruesome and violent deaths on "Game of Thrones":

SEE ALSO: Every 'Game of Thrones' romantic relationship, ranked from worst to best

24. Shae

Despite the fact that she sleeps with his dad and testifies against him in trial, Tyrion still loves her a little.

Time of death: Season 4, episode 10, "The Children"

Cause of death: Tyrion strangled her upon discovering that she was sleeping with his father, Tywin.

23. The High Septon, Margery Tyrell, Mace Tyrell, Loras Tyrell, Kevan Lannister, Lancel Lannister

According to an alchemist Tyrion talks to in season two, wildfire "burns so hot, it melts wood, stone, even steel! And of course: flesh. The substance burns so hot it melts flesh like tallow."

Wildfire also becomes more potent as it ages. The wildfire Cersei used was placed there by the Mad King over 20 years ago, so it was extremely dangerous. The deaths at the Destruction of the Great Sept of Baelor were quick, but they certainly weren't painless.

Time of deaths: Season 6, episode 10, "The Winds of Winter"

Cause of deaths: Burned alive in Cersei's wildfire explosion at the Sept of Baelor.

22. Jory Cassel

If it involves an eyeball in any way, it's gruesome.

Time of death: Season 1, episode 5, "The Wolf and the Lion"

Cause of death: Jaime Lannister stabbed him in the eye.

Here's what Nintendo's new $80 mini Super Nintendo looks like in action

Nintendo is about to release a miniature version of its Super Nintendo video game console.

The new console — called the SNES Classic Edition — comes with 21 packaged Super Nintendo Entertainment System classics, including "Donkey Kong Country" and "The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past." It costs $79.99, and it looks rad.

Super NES Classic Edition

If you're familiar with the NES Classic Edition, which Nintendo released in late 2016, then you're already pretty familiar with the SNES Classic Edition: It's a smaller version of the original SNES form factor. It doesn't play original SNES cartridges, only the games that are built into it.

But what it lacks in ability to play aging game cartridges is more than made up for by the console's many modern conveniences. It uses an HDMI cable to plug into your modern television, for instance, and you're able to save any game at any point — only some games on the original Super Nintendo had save systems built in, while many had none at all.

Super NES Classic Edition (Skitched)

A delightfully '90s-centric advertisement showing off the Super NES Classic Edition was released by Nintendo on Tuesday (seen in parts above), and it provides a ton of details about the system.

You can check it out right here:

But that's not all! At the same time as the North American version of the trailer arrived, a European version also arrived — and it's way crazier. Of note: The European version of the Super NES Classic Edition is slightly different in look from the North American version.

You can see that trailer right here:

The SNES Class Edition costs $79.99 and arrives on September 29. Pre-orders for the system aren't available just yet, but should go live any day now. The console is only planned for production through the end of 2017.

R. Kelly's latest accuser alleges the singer paid her to keep quiet about an abusive, underage sexual relationship

r kelly

In the latest R. Kelly-related investigative report by BuzzFeed News, Jerhonda Pace, an alleged victim of the R&B singer, claims she received "cash settlements" from the singer in return for "signing nondisclosure agreements" crafted to cover up a sexual relationship she had with Kelly that turned abusive when she was 16 years old.

Pace, now 24, says she felt the need to violate her nondisclosure agreement to speak out against Kelly following a July report by BuzzFeed News that alleged that the singer was keeping women against their will in a "cult."

"I didn't have anybody to speak up on my behalf when I was going through what I was going through with him," Pace told the outlet. "He's brainwashed them really bad, and it kind of reminds me of Charles Manson."

One of the women in Kelly's alleged cult has since denied the previous report, saying that she is of age and in a relationship with the singer on her own free will. Kelly's representatives have repeatedly denied all allegations.

According to the new report, Pace met R. Kelly outside of his 2008 child-pornography trial. As a 15-year-old fan of Kelly's, she says she faked being 18 to sneak into the trial, and she even defended the singer to MTV News while standing outside of the courtroom. After R. Kelly was acquitted of all charges in the trial, Pace says that a friend of the singer's invited her to a party at his home in Olympia Fields, Illinois. She then began an allegedly abusive relationship with Kelly as a 16-year old.

Pace alleges that the singer would film their sexual encounters and make her ask permission "to shower, eat, go to the bathroom, and leave the property" of his mansion. When she violated his "rules," Pace says she was "mentally and physically abused," according to BuzzFeed.

Pace left the relationship in 2010 after an alleged instance of abuse, and she contacted Susan E. Loggans, a Chicago lawyer. Pace claims the lawyer "negotiated a large settlement with Kelly" in return for her signing "a nondisclosure agreement and declining to pursue any charges or other claims against Kelly."

Though her agreement included a "non-disparagement clause," Pace is speaking out against Kelly for the first time, and she says she is now considering filing criminal charges against the singer.

Kelly's camp has since refuted the claims with the following statement:

"The allegations against Mr. Kelly are false, and are being made by individuals known to be dishonest. It is clear these continuing stories are the result of the effort of those with personal agendas who are working in concert to interfere with and damage his career. Mr. Kelly again denies any and all wrong doing and is taking appropriate legal action to protect himself from ongoing defamation."

Nintendo's $80 mini Super Nintendo went up for sale overnight and sold out immediately

Despite Nintendo's insistence that its upcoming SNES Classic Edition console won't be impossible to find, things aren't off to a great start. The console doesn't come out until September 29, yet both Amazon and Best Buy are already sold out of pre-orders.

You're forgiven for missing the alert: Best Buy pre-orders reportedly went live somewhere around 1:20 a.m. ET, while Amazon reportedly went live a bit later at 4:45 a.m. ET or so. Both sold out quickly, within minutes.

Super NES Classic Edition

Notably, there are still several retailers planning to offer pre-orders of the SNES Classic Edition that have yet to go live: Toys 'R' Us, Target, Walmart, and GameStop. It's unclear when those retailers will offer the system for pre-order, and Nintendo didn't respond to a request for comment regarding pre-orders going forward.

Still, if you're a fan looking to buy a SNES Classic Edition, this is a frustrating situation. Even the most dedicated fan isn't up in the middle of the night on the lookout.

Worse still, Nintendo and its retail partners provide no indication of when pre-orders will become available. The only specific information Nintendo has given thus far is the following statement, from its Facebook page:

"We appreciate the incredible anticipation that exists for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System: Super NES Classic Edition system, and can confirm that it will be made available for pre-order by various retailers late this month [August]. A significant amount of additional systems will be shipped to stores for launch day, and throughout the balance of the calendar year."

It is of course true that you'll be able to walk into a store on September 29 and buy the SNES Classic Edition, but so will many other people. And chances are that, whatever store you walk in to, supplies will be severely limited while demand is quite high.

In so many words, the best way to guarantee that you get an SNES Classic Edition console is to pre-order it.

NES Classic Edition / Super NES Classic Edition

If this sounds familiar to you, that's because Nintendo's NES Classic Edition console — released in late 2016, seen above on the left — had the same issue. The NES Classic Edition and the SNES Classic Edition are inexpensive, sought after by millions, and produced in a limited quantity. The result of that combination is obvious: The product is impossible to find.

Nintendo is seemingly fine with that problem.

The discussion becomes, "Nintendo has a hot new product that you can't find anywhere." The downside, of course, is that Nintendo fans and general consumers are furious that they can't buy a product that's highly sought after. But maybe they'll buy a Nintendo Switch instead!

For what it's worth, Nintendo says the SNES Classic Edition won't suffer the same supply issues as the NES Classic Edition. A Nintendo representative provided the following statement to Business Insider in June:

"We aren’t providing specific numbers, but we will produce significantly more units of Super NES Classic Edition than we did of NES Classic Edition."

The SNES Classic Edition goes on sale on September 29, and it costs $79.99 — you can check out the trailer for the console right here:

Ever since Nintendo announced the SNES Classic Edition, fans have been frantically looking for a chance to reserve one. It's easy to understand why: The SNES Classic Edition is a miniaturized version of the original console that works with modern TVs, yet it costs just $80 and comes with 21 games packed in.

Super NES Classic Edition

Better yet — one of those games is the never-before-released "Star Fox 2."

When the console launches in September, demand is expected to be very high. Thus, potential buyers have been eagerly anticipating the ability to preorder the system. As of Tuesday afternoon, the pre-orders have begun! Check out where to find them all below.

SEE ALSO: Nintendo's new $80 mini Super Nintendo will be available for a limited time

You can preorder the Super NES Classic Edition at any of the following retailers starting on Tuesday — the stores are going live on a rolling basis, it seems, with Amazon and Best Buy going live overnight (and selling out quickly).

Of note: The Super NES Classic Edition is a limited-edition product and planned for production only through the end of 2017. If you're interested in getting one for the $80 asking price — rather than double or more through resellers — your best bet is preordering one. Rest assured that the Super NES Classic Edition is going to be a high-demand holiday gift, so you'll want to get in on preorders to guarantee one in time for the holidays.

Louise Linton, wife of US Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin, was in the spotlight well before her involvement with Washington insiders.

An actress and model from Edinburgh, Scotland, Linton married Mnuchin in an extravagant ceremony in June. She most recently made headlines with an Instagram photo that shows Linton and Mnuchin stepping off a government jet, adding the caption: "Great #daytrip to #Kentucky!" She tagged several high-end designers, including Tom Ford and Valentino, in the post. The resulting comments were less than charitable; Linton then bashed one commenter for being "adorably out of touch" and made her Instagram account private.

But the jet photo and ensuing comments were not the first time Linton sparked a controversy. Below, see more about her life.

The solar eclipse caused a 10% drop in Netflix viewing

2017 total solar eclipse new york city

While the solar eclipse drew massive crowds and a bare-eyed President Trump outside to witness the rare event Monday afternoon, Netflix viewership took a significant hit.

According to the streaming service's U.S. Twitter account, Netflix plays dropped 10 percent during the eclipse.

"Hey, just wondering why 10% of you chose to watch a giant rock cover a giant ball of gas when I HAVE ALWAYS BEEN THERE FOR YOU," Netflix tweeted.  The account added, "but really, there was a 10% drop in plays during the eclipse today. Well played, Moon."

In addition to losing viewers to the momentary eclipse, Netflix may also have lost some viewers in the long term to eclipse-induced eye damage.

Google searches for "eyes hurt" reportedly spiked following the eclipse, and numerous notable people — including Trump, Tesla CEO Elon Musk, and New York Giants wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr.— publicly demonstrated the incorrect, retina-burning technique of viewing the eclipse without special glasses.

Who was the smartest, dumbest, luckiest, and most emotional this week on 'Game of Thrones'

$

Beyond the Wall Hound Beric JorahWarning: Spoilers for "Game of Thrones" season seven, episode six, "Beyond the Wall." If you aren't caught up on the series, read at your own risk.

Every week the game of thrones changes. This week there was a lot of talking, wights, Arya monologues, lightning speed travel, and more wights. It was mostly unpleasant, and not many characters are playing the throne game particularly well right now.

Every week, we round up and detail which character was the smartest, dumbest, luckiest, and more in our power rankings.

Here's the "Game of Thrones" power rankings based on season seven episode six, "Beyond the Wall":

SEE ALSO: The 24 most gruesome 'Game of Thrones' deaths, ranked

The smartest: Beric Dondarrion, Sansa Stark

Beric Dondarrion has died six times but somehow has the best brain this week. He doesn't know exactly what the Lord of Light wants from him, but unlike his one-time resurrected buddy Jon Snow, he accepts his fate with gratitude, not brooding, and uses his new lives for a greater purpose. Jon kind of does this, but he sounds like he thinks the Lord of Light is annoying. After talking with Beric, he seems to come around to this new perspective.

Sansa Stark also uses her noggin this week: she's asked to travel to King's Landing, but sees right through Cersei and refuses to travel for a month to an event that could lead to her death. She sends Brienne instead. Go, Lady Sansa, go!

The dumbest: Tyrion Lannister, The Hound

This week Tyrion's plan to capture a wight and bring it to Cersei proves that it's as dumb as it sounds. While Tyrion is thinking about the future, he's not doing a very good job getting his queen to listen to him, which is a problem since he is Hand of the Queen. We're desperately hoping that Tyrion Lannister has a grand plan we don't know about planned for next week's awkward meeting of enemies in King's Landing.

The Hound loves cursing and throwing rocks, apparently. His foolish throwing of rocks at a dumb wight makes them realize that the lake has frozen over, allowing them to attack. Sure, that wight did deserve to get hit in the skull with a big rock, but The Hound is so much better than this.

The most creative: The Night King

The Night King definitely knew what he was doing during the frozen lake attack. It looks like he knew dragons were coming, or at least that they could be on their way, and had a plan on what to do once they made their debut North of the Wall. His plan worked, because now he has a dragon on his side, in addition to an entire army of dead people, giants, and polar bears (there has to be more than one of those by now, right?).

snes classic 2x1

When Nintendo released a modern remake of its Nintendo Entertainment System game console last holiday season, lots of people went home disappointed, because the game company didn't make enough to satisfy the huge demand.

With the company about to release a similar remake of the Super Nintendo Entertainment System, history seems to be repeating itself.

After Best Buy and Amazon opened up preorders for the new SNES Classic Edition Monday night, they sold out almost immediately. On Tuesday, Target and other retailers opened up their own preorders, only to close them within minutes amid crushing demand.

To get a sense of this new Nintendo madness, I swung by a GameStop in downtown San Francisco, right in the heart of the city's tech scene. We had heard through the grapevine that most GameStop stores will only be getting 10 to 16 SNES Classic consoles. I've reached out to the retailer to confirm, but assuming those numbers are accurate, a lot of these folks, who were waiting outside the GameStop on Tuesday morning to pre-order a console, likely went home empty-handed:

gamestop snes classic line

At the time of our visit, around 11 a.m. PT, the store's computer system hadn't yet been updated to accept SNES Classic preorders, an employee told me. Reports on Twitter later indicated that the number of people in the line reached as high as 45. According to those reports, the store actually had 36 consoles available for pre-order.

It was a similar scene in New York City, where Business Insider's Chris Snyder hit a GameStop near our offices and found another line:

gamestop snes classic nyc

The SNES Classic Edition is a miniature, modernized version of the classic console that will come with 20 all-time classic games built in. It's priced at $80 and is slated to hit store shelves on September 29th.

In contrast to what Nintendo fans found this week, Nintendo had promised that the SNES Classic would be easier to find than its predecessor was last year.

"We aren’t providing specific numbers, but we will produce significantly more units of Super NES Classic Edition than we did of NES Classic Edition," Nintendo told Business Insider back in June.

We've reached out to Nintendo to see if there's an update on the SNES Classic's availability. In the meanwhile, the best solution is to just plug away and try to find a retailer that will take your preorder.

Ultimately, though, it's a frustrating situation. To quote our own Chris Snyder, who's still searching for a unit to call his own: "Can't they just make more?"

The 'Game of Thrones' season 7 finale will be the longest episode in the show's history

Jaime Bronn The Dragon and the Wolf

You might have to take a long nap or have a giant cup of coffee (or both) before watching the season-seven finale of "Game of Thrones" on Sunday. The finale episode of the beloved HBO series' penultimate season, called "The Dragon and the Wolf", will be a record-breaking 79 minutes and 43 seconds long.

The sixth episode of the season, "Beyond the Wall" was 71 minutes long.

This isn't the first time "Game of Thrones" has done long episodes, but "The Dragon and the Wolf" will be the longest. The season-six finale, "The Winds of Winter," was 68 minutes long and at that point it was the longest episode in the show's history. The creators packed a lot of death (and other things) into that one, so who knows what's in store this Sunday when all of our heroes meet Cersei in King's Landing.

A lot can happen with an extra eight minutes and 43 seconds on any TV show, especially "Game of Thrones." We're hoping for 8 minutes and 43 seconds of the Stark children stabbing Littlefinger with his dagger, but it will probably just be Cersei arguing with people before killing them.

"The Dragon and the Wolf" airs on HBO Sunday night at 9pm Eastern.

People are going nuts over this classic game franchise getting revived by Microsoft

It's been over a decade since the world last saw an entry in the revered "Age of Empires" game franchise. The studio that created the series was disbanded, its principal leaders scattered across the game industry.

In 2017, Microsoft is bringing the series back — and fans are very excited.

Age of Empires 4

A new teaser trailer for "Age of Empires IV" was revealed earlier this week. The game itself isn't shown, and little information is provided about what to expect, but it's got fans going bananas regardless.

The trailer — which features no gameplay, and offers little indication of what to expect from the game — has already garnered nearly 4 million views on YouTube in two days.

Part of the positive reaction is coming from news of who's in charge of the game: "Age of Empires IV" is being made by Relic Entertainment, a studio that's highly-regarded in the "real-time strategy" gaming genre. Rather than controlling a single player character, in real-time strategy games you're in charge of whole groups. In an "Age of Empires" game, that could mean managing a city-state, or a nation, or a whole empire.

Little is known about the new "Age of Empires" beyond a vague release window — 2018 — and a platform (Windows 10). Check out the first teaser of "Age of Empires IV" right here:

Justice League Warner Bros 2 final

After a summer movie season that saw some hit movies but a lot of duds, Hollywood is looking for a rebound in the fall.

The fall season will have its share of blockbusters — from the anticipated “It” to "Thor: Ragnarok" and “Justice League” — but there will also be some titles mixed in that will compete for award season attention, like “Call Me By Your Name” and “Stronger.”

Here are 34 movies coming out this fall that you shouldn’t miss:

"It" - September 8

The latest adaptation of Stephen King's classic novel looks to be the most chilling yet. In it, a group of bullied kids team up to take on a monster named Pennywise (that looks like a clown) that hunts kids.

"First They Killed My Father" - September 15

Netflix's next anticipated movie from a marquee name is Angelina Jolie's latest directing effort that looks back on the horrific upbringing in Cambodia of Loung Ung. Jolie cast hundreds of survivors and their children to recreate their stories.

"mother!" - September 15

Darren Aronofsky's latest thriller stars Jennifer Lawrence and Javier Bardem as a couple whose lives are suddenly interrupted when guests arrive at their home. Aronofsky has always had a knack for completely messing with audience's heads, and this one looks to be no different. The movie also stars Ed Harris and Michelle Pfeiffer.

An origin movie about The Joker is in the works without Jared Leto — and Martin Scorsese is involved

the dark knight joker

Warner Bros. is working on an origin movie on the legendary DC Comics villain The Joker. But here's the interesting twist — it will be cowritten and directed by Todd Phillips and produced by Martin Scorsese.

It's a random pairing that perhaps only the Clown Prince of Crime could fully appreciate: the director known best for making bro comedies like "The Hangover" movies and "Old School" teaming up with one of the greatest filmmakers who ever lived.

According to Deadline, Phillips is cowriting the script with Scott Silver ("8 Mile") and is producing the movie alongside Scorsese. The Joker origin movie will be the first title in a spin-off of Warner Bros.' DC Comics Extended Universe that will delve deeper into the DC catalog to focus on iconic characters.

Having The Joker kick things off is a smart choice by Warner Bros./DC. The character continues to fascinate audiences through the decades, from the memorable performances given on the big screen by Jack Nicholson and Heath Ledger (who won a posthumous best supporting actor Oscar) to Mark Hamill voicing the character for years.

Todd Phillips Alberto E. Rodriguez GettyAnd though the current holder of the outlandish character, Jared Leto, will continue on playing The Joker in the sequel to "Suicide Squad" and a Harley Quinn spinoff movie, he will not be playing him in the origin movie.

According to Deadline, a different actor, possibly younger, will play the role.

Phillips and Silver are currently writing the movie, which Deadline said is intended to be a "grounded hard-boiled crime film set in early-'80s Gotham City that isn’t meant to feel like a DC movie as much as one of Scorsese’s films from that era, like 'Taxi Driver,' 'Raging Bull' or 'The King Of Comedy.'"

Ellen DeGeneres

Whether it's movie stars or directors, everyone is flocking to TV and streaming lately to cash in. But the money has always been there for TV show hosts.

They are the ones who are in our living rooms on a daily basis, and since the 1950s executives have shaped TV hosts — whether they be on morning shows or late night — to have a quality that makes them almost feel like they are part of our family. And that leads to big bucks.

Variety has compiled the biggest estimated annual salaries of reality, news, and talk show hosts. There's newbies to the game like Mike Meyers, Jamie Foxx, and Megyn Kelly, and then there are the big hitters like Ryan Seacrest, Ellen DeGeneres, and Judith Sheindlin (you know here better as Judge Judy).

Here are the top 20 paid hosts:

A trio of blockbuster games are finally coming to VR headsets this year

A trio of blockbuster games — "DOOM," "Fallout 4," and "Skyrim" — are scheduled to arrive on high-end virtual reality headsets by the end of 2017. All three games are from publisher Bethesda Softworks; the release dates were announced via blog post on Tuesday.

Here's a look at "Fallout 4" being played on PC with an HTC Vive headset:

Fallout 4 (VR)

Notably, "Fallout 4" is only heading to the PC-powered HTC Vive headset; the game is also available on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, but won't be playable in VR on either platform. "Fallout 4 VR" is scheduled to launch on December 12.

In the cases of "Skyrim" and "DOOM VFR," the games are heading to both the HTC Vive and the PlayStation 4-powered PlayStation VR headset. "Skyrim VR" is identical to the original game, first released in 2011 — instead of playing the game on a TV from first-person, you are the first-person in question when you're in VR.

With "DOOM VFR," the game is a spin-off of the outrageously good 2016 re-launch of the "DOOM" franchise.

You're still shooting and ripping monsters to pieces, but this time you'll be doing so from a variety of different perspectives. Instead of the traditional "DOOM Marine" player character, this time you're playing as a doctor who dies early on in the story. He transfers his consciousness to a computer, thus enabling him to jump from being to being. The extremely high-speed movement from "DOOM" is being tempered by a teleportation system — enemies seemingly rush you less than in last year's game.

Here's the full list of release dates and platforms:

  • "Skyrim VR": November 17 for PlayStation VR (PlayStation 4)
  • "DOOM VFR": December 1 for PlayStation VR (PlayStation 4), HTC Vive (PC)
  • "Fallout 4 VR": December 12 for HTC Vive (PC)

Each game supports VR headsets and motion controllers — you'll literally throw fireballs in "Skyrim VR," for instance. Try not to throw your PlayStation Move controller across the room!
