HBO confirms it was hacked, and a 'Game of Thrones' script may have been stolen

Game of Thrones

HBO is now the latest entertainment company to be hacked.

Entertainment Weekly reports the pay-cable channel had 1.5 terabytes of data from the company taken. The hackers claim to have put upcoming episodes of "Ballers" and "Room 104" online. But the big find was a script that’s allegedly from next week’s fourth episode of "Game of Thrones."

“HBO recently experienced a cyber incident, which resulted in the compromise of proprietary information,” the network confirmed in a statement to EW. “We immediately began investigating the incident and are working with law enforcement and outside cybersecurity firms. Data protection is a top priority at HBO, and we take seriously our responsibility to protect the data we hold.”

On Sunday, an anonymous email was sent to many reporters announcing the hack, according to EW. “Hi to all mankind," the email reads. "The greatest leak of cyber space era is happening. What’s its name? Oh I forget to tell. Its HBO and 'Game of Thrones'……!!!!!! You are lucky to be the first pioneers to witness and download the leak. Enjoy it & spread the words. Whoever spreads well, we will have an interview with him. HBO is falling.”

It's unclear if the hacker has possession of any completed episodes of "Game of Thrones." HBO would not divulge what might have been stolen.

Though the biggest hack within the entertainment industry is still the one suffered by Sony in 2014, there have been smaller ones recently. In April, Netflix was hacked and episodes from season five of "Orange is the New Black" were put online ahead of its summer launch. Then in May, a hacker claimed to have stolen Disney's "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales," but studio head Bob Iger later said it was a hoax.

The eSports competitive video gaming market continues to grow revenues & attract investors

This is a preview of a research report from BI Intelligence, Business Insider's premium research service. To learn more about BI Intelligence, click here.

What is eSports? History & Rise of Video Game Tournaments

Years ago, eSports was a community of video gamers who would gather at conventions to play Counter Strike, Call of Duty, or League of Legends.

These multiplayer video game competitions would determine League of Legends champions, the greatest shooters in Call of Duty, the cream of the crop of Street Fighter players, the elite Dota 2 competitors, and more.

But today, as the history of eSports continue to unfold, media giants such as ESPN and Turner are broadcasting eSports tournaments and competitions. And in 2014, Amazon acquired Twitch, the live streaming video platform that has been and continues to be the leader in online gaming broadcasts. And YouTube also wanted to jump on the live streaming gaming community with the creation of YouTube Gaming.

eSports Market Growth Booming

To put in perspective how big eSports is becoming, a Google search for "lol" does not produce "laughing out loud" as the top result. Instead, it points to League of Legends, one of the most popular competitive games in existence. The game has spawned a worldwide community called the League of Legends Championship Series, more commonly known as LCS or LOL eSports.

What started as friends gathering in each other's homes to host LAN parties and play into the night has become an official network of pro gaming tournaments and leagues with legitimate teams, some of which are even sponsored and have international reach. Organizations such as Denial, AHQ, and MLG have multiple eSports leagues.

And to really understand the scope of all this, consider that the prize pool for the latest Dota 2 tournament was more than $20 million.

Websites even exist for eSports live scores to let people track the competitions in real time if they are unable to watch. There are even fantasy eSports leagues similar to fantasy football, along with the large and growing scene of eSports betting and gambling.

So it's understandable why traditional media companies would want to capitalize on this growing trend just before it floods into the mainstream. Approximately 300 million people worldwide tune in to eSports today, and that number is growing rapidly. By 2020, that number will be closer to 500 million.

eSports Industry Analysis - The Future of the Competitive Gaming Market

Financial institutions are starting to take notice. Goldman Sachs valued eSports at $500 million in 2016 and expects the market will grow at 22% annually compounded over the next three years into a more than $1 billion opportunity.

And industry statistics are already backing this valuation and demonstrating the potential for massive earnings. To illustrate the market value, market growth, and potential earnings for eSports, consider Swedish media company Modern Times Group's $87 million acquisition of Turtle Entertainment, the holding company for ESL. YouTube has made its biggest eSports investment to date by signing a multiyear broadcasting deal with Faceit to stream the latter's Esports Championship Series. And the NBA will launch its own eSports league in 2018.

Of course, as with any growing phenomenon, the question becomes: How do advertisers capitalize? This is especially tricky for eSports because of its audience demographics, which is young, passionate, male-dominated, and digital-first. They live online and on social media, are avid ad-blockers, and don't watch traditional TV or respond to conventional advertising.

So what will the future of eSports look like? How high can it climb? Could it reach the mainstream popularity of baseball or football? How will advertisers be able to reach an audience that does its best to shield itself from advertising?

Robert Elder, research analyst for BI Intelligence, Business Insider's premium research service, has compiled an unparalleled report on the eSports ecosystem that dissects the growing market for competitive gaming. This comprehensive, industry-defining report contains more than 30 charts and figures that forecast audience growth, average revenue per user, and revenue growth.

Companies and organizations mentioned in the report include: NFL, NBA, English Premier League, La Liga, Bundesliga, NHL, Paris Saint-Germain, Ligue 1, Ligue de Football, Twitch, Amazon, YouTube, Facebook, Twitter, ESPN, Electronic Arts, EA Sports, Valve, Riot Games, Activision Blizzard, ESL, Turtle Entertainment, Dreamhack, Modern Times Group, Turner Broadcasting, TBS Network, Vivendi, Canal Plus, Dailymotion, Disney, BAMTech, Intel, Coca Cola, Red Bull, HTC, Mikonet

Here are some eSports industry facts and statistics from the report:

  • eSports is a still nascent industry filled with commercial opportunity.
  • There are a variety of revenue streams that companies can tap into.
  • The market is presently undervalued and has significant room to grow.
  • The dynamism of this market distinguishes it from traditional sports.
  • The audience is high-value and global, and its numbers are rising.
  • Brands can prosper in eSports by following the appropriate game plan.
  • Game publishers approach their Esport ecosystems in different ways.
  • Successful esport games are comprised of the same basic ingredients.
  • Digital streaming platforms are spearheading the popularity of eSports.
  • Legacy media are investing into eSports, and seeing encouraging results.
  • Traditional sports franchises have a clear opportunity to seize in eSports.
  • Virtual and augmented reality firms also stand to benefit from eSports.

In full, the report illuminates the business of eSports from four angles:

  • The gaming nucleus of eSports, including an overview of popular esport genres and games; the influence of game publishers, and the spectrum of strategies they adopt toward their respective esport scenes; the role of eSports event producers and the tournaments they operate.
  • The eSports audience profile, its size, global reach, and demographic, psychographic, and behavioral attributes; the underlying factors driving its growth; why they are an attractive target for brands and broadcasters; and the significant audience and commercial crossover with traditional sports.
  • eSports media broadcasters, including digital avant-garde like Twitch and YouTube, newer digital entrants like Facebook and traditional media outlets like Turner’s TBS Network, ESPN, and Canal Plus; their strategies and successes in this space; and the virtual reality opportunity.
  • eSports market economics, with a market sizing, growth forecasts, and regional analyses; an evaluation of the eSports spectacle and its revenue generators, some of which are idiosyncratic to this industry; strategic planning for brand marketers, with case studies; and an exploration of the infinite dynamism and immense potential of the eSports economy.

NOW WATCH: 7 details you might have missed on season 7 episode 2 of 'Game of Thrones'

Anthony Scaramucci reportedly paid $100,000 for a cameo in the 'Wall Street' sequel

Before Anthony Scaramucci entered the halls of the White House as the Trump administration's communications director, he was a figure in the New York financial world. And when the sequel to one of the most well-known movies about finance came around, he wanted to be in it.

According to The Daily Beast, Scaramucci paid $100,000 for a brief cameo in Oliver Stone's 2010 movie, "Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps" — the disappointing sequel to Stone's classic 1987 movie, "Wall Street," which earned Michael Douglas a best actor Oscar for his performance as Gordon Gekko.

Scaramucci, a former Wall Street executive, appears twice in the movie for about 15 seconds of screen time, playing an unnamed short seller working for Josh Brolin's character.

Here's the line he has: “Churchill Schwartz has a huge position in this thing and I want to get you in that stock."

See if you can find him in this clip from the movie:

Along with the screen time, Scaramucci's financial contribution to the movie also got the logo of his global investment firm, SkyBridge Capital, to be displayed prominently in a scene where Douglas' Gekko character attends a charity auction.

The Daily Beast also reports that Donald Trump filmed a one-minute cameo in the movie, in which he has small talk with Gekko at a barber shop. However, that scene was cut from the movie.

One of Trump's lines: “Has anyone ever told you that you’d look great — really great — in a comb over?”

Douglas looks really pleased he has to work with Trump.

Watch the scene:

Critics did not like "Wall Street: Money Never Sleep." The movie only has a 55% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. But it did earn over $130 million worldwide at the box office (it was made for $70 million).

We ranked the 'Game of Thrones' characters by leadership abilities — here's how they're doing so far this season

Daenerys meets Jon Snow

Warning: "Game of Thrones" spoilers ahead.

When you play the game of thrones, you win or you die.

But leadership isn't always a zero sum game, even when you're dealing with dragons, ice zombies, sneak attacks, and death. So much death.

Last season, we ranked the "Game of Thrones" characters based on their leadership abilities. So here's an update, based on the intense, upsetting, and altogether brutal events of this season so far.

A few notes: This list only counts characters who are still alive on the show (not in the books). So keep in mind that a bunch of people have died recently. Shout out to the incomparable Olenna Tyrell— we'll miss you, Queen of Thorns.

Also, this list only takes into consideration individuals who could be counted as "leaders" — more solitary characters who aren't currently in leadership roles aren't on here, like Arya Stark, Jorah Mormont, Meera Reed, Melisandre, or Sandor Clegane.

The same goes for people who are basically totally out of commission at this point — sorry, Ellaria and Yara.

Lastly, this ranking looks into characters' track records but heavily favors things that happened this season. This list examines leadership ability, not overall power, importance, or title.

Here are the leaders on "Game of Thrones" that have survived the season so far, ranked from worst to best:

SEE ALSO: 6 effective leadership styles we can learn from 'Game of Thrones'

DON'T MISS: We ranked the Game of Thrones characters by leadership skills — No. 1 may surprise you

22. Jaime Lannister

Jaime seems more directionless than ever this season.

Sure, he did a good job of beating the weakest of the great houses — "golden roses, indeed," as Olenna quipped — and poisoning an old lady.

But all he could do while the Queen of Thrones berated him about his terrible sister-girlfriend was throw back half-hearted protestations.

And the look on his face when the last Tyrell revealed she had gone all "Arsenic and Old Lace" on Joffrey was pretty rough.

Now he knows that his father and sister forced Tyrion out for no reason at all — so what's next for the Kingslayer?

21. Qyburn

As Tom McKay pointed out in Mic, this slippery, disgraced ex-Maester has become one of the most powerful people in King's Landing. He's now Queen Cersei's Hand, after all.

But that doesn't mean Qyburn's a decent leader.

Previous Hands, like Ned Stark, Tyrion Lannister, and Tywin Lannister, all brought their own agenda and a forceful presence to the role.

Qyburn is still just a sniveling sycophant. He's basically Cersei's medieval mad scientist. He creates creepy zombie knights for her. He builds dragon-killing machines for her.

He's ultimately a follower, not a leader.

20. Brienne of Tarth

In fairness, we haven't seen too much from Brienne yet this season.

So far, she's mostly just been hanging around Winterfell, protecting Sansa, and mentoring Podrick.

She's done a good job of that, but I'm definitely excited to see what's in store for her next.

Pandora released its Q2 earnings on Monday, topping Wall Street's revenue target and sending shares soaring 7% in after hours trading.

The stock move was a rebound from a sell off earlier in the day that sent Pandora shares down 5% in regular trading, after the company announced it would shut down its services in Australia and New Zealand, and operate exclusively in the United States.

Here's what it reported:

  • Earnings per share (non-GAAP) — Pandora said it lost $0.21 per share in the second quarter, compared to analyst estimates of losses of $0.24 per share. In the same period last year, Pandora posted losses of $0.12 per share.
  • Revenues (GAAP) were $376.8 million, compared to analyst estimates of $368.87 million. In the same period last year, Pandora posted $343 million in revenues.
  • Subscription revenue were $68.9 million, up 25% from last year.
  • Ad revenues were $278.2 million, up 5% from last year.
  • Ticketing service revenue were $29.7 million, up 31% from last year.

NOW WATCH: Google's DeepMind AI just taught itself to walk

Nearly 2 million people have started listening to Pandora on smart speakers like the Amazon Echo (P)

microsoft harman kardon invoke cortana

Pandora's number of active users declined by 2% in the second quarter, but the group of people using the streaming music service on a voice activated device, like Amazon's Echo, grew by a whopping 282% year-over-year, the company said on Monday.

That's 1.6 million listeners on voice activated devices, out of the 76 million Pandora listeners.

The surge in listeners accessing the music service from voice-activated devices reflects the growing popularity of the Amazon Echo, Google Home and other new smart speaker devices (Even Apple has a speaker launching soon). And it could represent an important ray of hope for Pandora's business, which has experienced a steady decline in listeners in recent years.

With voice-activated speaker devices, a user can quickly request whatever song, artist or type of music they're in the mood for simply by speaking to the device. If that kind of convenience and ease of use entices people to spend more time on Pandora, or more people to pay for Pandora's subscription service, that could be a big boon for the company.

Pandora executives on Monday's earnings conference call noted that voice activated devices are a "natural platform" for Pandora, and noted that Pandora is benefitting from connected consumer electronic devices and car-based interfaces.

"In the back half of the year, we will deepen our existing relationships with partners like Amazon,
Google and Sonos, and add new partnerships to expand our suite of over 2,000 connected devices," Pandora said on the call.

Despite a tumultuous morning, in which the company announced the end of its services in Australia and New Zealand, it was successful quarter for the music streaming service. Pandora beat Wall Street targets in both revenues and earnings per share in Q2.

13 'Game of Thrones' actors whose real-life accents sound nothing like their characters on the show

Jon Snow

"Game of Thrones" is a huge, ambitious show. It's clear how much work goes into crafting each of the hour-long episodes. From creating hyper-realistic dragons, to casting hundreds of extras for giant battles, the show spares no expense.

For many fans, though, there's one detail of the show where the work that goes into it may go unnoticed: accents.

Over the past six-plus seasons, "Game of Thrones" has introduced fans to close to 200 characters. Nearly all of them speak with some variation of an English or Scottish accent, though there are a few exceptions. However, few actors are using their natural voices, and are instead doing an accent that fits where in Westeros their character is from.

Here are 13 "Game of Thrones" characters who sound nothing like the actors who portray them:

Oberyn Martell

Though he was born in Chile, Pedro Pascal was raised in the Southern California and Texas, and sounds nothing like his onscreen persona.

Liam Cunningham was born in Dublin, Ireland, though you wouldn't be able to tell from the Geordie accent he does while playing Davos.

The 8 biggest questions we have after this week's 'Game of Thrones'

$
0
0

Game of Thrones the Queen's Justice season 7

Warning: Spoilers for "Game of Thrones" season seven, episode three, "The Queen's Justice." If you aren't caught up on the series, read at your own risk.

This week's episode of "Game of Thrones" provided a lot more action than the first two episodes of the season. It also had a ton of twists.

Instead of protecting Casterly Rock, Jaime attacks and takes Highgarden. And instead of giving Ellaria Sand a brutal death via The Mountain, Cersei leaves her to rot in the dungeon for the rest of her days, but not before watching her daughter slowly die of poison — and rot.

Things are looking good for Cersei this week.

She got revenge on one of her worst enemies. She outwitted her brother Tyrion in battle strategy. She seems to have the Iron Bank of Braavos on her side. And she eliminated the Tyrell and Martell bloodlines for good (even the bastard Sand Snakes), and in doing so, took out two great houses backing her greatest enemy, Daenerys Targaryen.

But things won't be this great for Cersei for long. Her moves were clever for now, but we have some questions based on what we say in "The Queen's Justice" that could mean her days are numbered.

Here are all the questions we have after this week's episode of "Game of Thrones:"

SEE ALSO: These 10 'Game of Thrones' characters disappeared, but could come back in a major way this season

What's happening to Yara Greyjoy? And where is Theon headed?

We see Euron bring Yara to the Red Keep along with Ellaria and Tyene, but we don't see what happens to her after the walk through King's Landing. Is she Cersei's prisoner? Wherever she is, she's lucky she doesn't have to watch Tyene die and rot. But that doesn't mean she's lucky at all. Cersei will probably hold her as a hostage for now, or maybe let Euron keep her for himself.

We get a brief glimpse of Theon, who is saved by fellow Ironborn who appear to be on his side of the war. They don't greet him warmly, but chances are he's either headed back to Dragonstone, or continuing the mission Dorne to recruit some allies, who might be upset that their people have been killed by Queen Cersei.

Will the Iron Bank actually support Cersei, who has actively ignored the Crown's debt to them for years?

Cersei's meeting with the Iron Bank in "The Queen's Justice" goes unusually well for her, considering the crown has ignored the debts to the bank for years. This debt was mostly created by Littlefinger, who borrowed a lot of money from the Iron Bank as Master of Coin and never paid it back. In season four, Tywin tells Cersei that one of the reasons he agreed to ally with House Tyrell was due to their wealth. They could help pay back the debts.

In season three, Tyrion discovers the debt Littlefinger created and says, “If we fail to repay these loans, the bank will fund our enemies. One way or another, they always get their gold back.”

Cersei sounds like she has a plan to pay back the debts to the Iron Bank (which could be stealing money from Highgarden). But Daenerys could get in her way. And even if Daenerys doesn't, the Iron Bank could stick it to Cersei by using the money she paid them back to support her enemies.

Will Euron turn on Cersei?

It's already been pretty well established that Euron and Cersei can't be trusted: by anyone or each other. In "The Queen's Justice," Cersei tells Euron that his proposal of marriage won't happen until the war is over, even after he's delivered the gift of revenge to her doorstep. Rude, Cersei!

Despite Cersei's elongation of their engagement, Euron brings his ships to Casterly Rock (at what appears to be the speed of light) and destroys the Unsullied ships, so they don't have an easy way of getting back to Dragonstone. But without a confirmed marriage to Cersei, there's nothing stopping Euron from either taking the Iron Throne for himself, or for abandoning her cause when things don't go her way.

'Modern Family' actress Sofia Vergara is launching an underwear startup

sofia vergara

Sofia Vergara may be famous for her role in "Modern Family," but she also wants to be known as a businesswoman.

Vergara is the highest-paid actress on TV, pulling in $41.5 million over the past year alone, according to Forbes.

But Vergara has learned not to rely only on her acting — she has been endorsing brands like Pepsi and Head & Shoulders since she started out as an actress, and she has her own perfume that's sold in Kohl's and on Amazon.

She's become a successful businesswoman in her own right, and in her latest venture, she's helping other women to do the same.

Vergara is partnering with Renata Black to relaunch a women's underwear brand called EBY (formerly "Empowered by You"). Black, who is also the founder of Seven Bar Foundation, a non-profit that provides women with micro-financing to enable them to grow their own businesses, originally created the company in 2012 with the goal of spreading the message of women's empowerment.

EBY10% of EBY's sales will go to the Seven Bar Foundation.

"It's about driving profits with purpose," Vergara told Business Insider.

The new underwear collection has been reimagined with Vergara's input. Underwear is sold directly to consumers via an online subscription, rather than wholesale to stores.

Customers can decide whether they want to receive shipments monthly, every other month, or quarterly.

"It's a little gift you give yourself every month," Vergara said.

The new collection comes in six different styles, in various colors and patterns, and from sizes XS to 4XL. Each pair will cost between $20 and $27. There will also be bundle pricing and discounts for customers who buy more frequently.

Sand Game of Thrones the queen's justiceWarning: Spoilers for "Game of Thrones" season seven. If you aren't caught up with the series, read at your own risk.

Season seven of "Game of Thrones" is only three episodes in, but it has already proven to be one of the most brutal yet. There's already been some major battles and major deaths, including one that made dying look cool.

For now, most of the dead folks on this list died at the hands of Cersei or Euron, but we're hoping that things start getting worse for them very soon.

So here is your guide to who died on "Game of Thrones" so far this season:

SEE ALSO: The 8 biggest questions we have after this week's 'Game of Thrones'

Obara Sand

Time of death: Episode two, "Stormborn."

Cause of death: In his attack on Yara's fleet, Euron Greyjoy stabs the daughter of Oberyn Martell in the gut with a spear. By the end of the battle, her body is hanging from the ship, so she's definitely dead.

Nymeria Sand

Time of death: Episode two, "Stormborn."

Cause of death: In Euron's attack, he strangles Nymeria, who is a daughter of Oberyn (and not Arya Stark's direwolf). At the end of the battle, her body is hanging from the ship, so she's also definitely dead.

Tyene Sand

Time of death: Episode three, "The Queen's Justice."

Cause of death: Cersei locks Ellaria up in a dungeon with her daughter, Tyene, who she poisons the same way Ellaria poisoned Myrcella: with a kiss and a poison called "The Long Farewell." So Ellaria has to watch her own daughter die a brutal death, and there's nothing she can do about it.

Sony's PlayStation 4 continues to dominate as the world's most popular game console

Sony's PlayStation 4 continues to dominate Microsoft's Xbox One and Nintendo's Switch. As of June 30, the PlayStation 4 reached 63.3 million consoles sold. That puts Sony in the lead by a mile.

PlayStation 4 vs PlayStation 4 Pro

More specifically, Sony's PlayStation 4 sales are more than double that of the closest competition — the "closest competition," of course, being Microsoft's Xbox One. Though Microsoft no longer reports sales numbers for its Xbox One console, the best estimates put the Xbox One somewhere in the realm of 30 million units sold.

In just Sony's last financial quarter, from April 1 to June 30, the company sold 3.3 million PlayStation 4 consoles. Doesn't sound like a lot? Nintendo's Switch, by comparison, has sold a total of 4.7 million units in its lifespan — from March 1 to June 30. Nintendo estimates it'll sell around 10 million Switch consoles in its first year, while Sony's expecting to move a whopping 18 million PlayStation 4 consoles in the same amount of time.

God of War (2018)

The continued success of the PlayStation 4 is due to several different factors:

  1. The PlayStation 4 was the less expensive console when it launched in 2013, coming in at $100 less than Microsoft's Xbox One.
  2. The PlayStation 4 is an attractive box that easily fits into your home, and using it as more than a game console is a snap.
  3. A lineup of killer blockbuster games, from "Uncharted 4: A Thief's End" to "Horizon Zero Dawn" to "Bloodborne," made the PlayStation 4 a must-have console. All three of those games are only playable on PS4.
  4. Success begets success — the PlayStation 4 has overtaken the zeitgeist as "the" game console to own if you're going to buy a game console.

Though Sony's exclusive game lineup isn't full of bangers in the back half of 2017, an impressive array of major exclusives are currently in the works. And if you're looking for a way to enjoy more 4K content on your new 4K TV, the PlayStation 4 Pro offers an upgrade path to even prettier games. All of which is to say one thing: Sony's PlayStation 4 isn't showing any signs of slowing down.

'13 Reasons Why' drove more people to look up ways to kill themselves, a new study suggests

13 Reasons Why

The graphic, unsettling finale of the hit Netflix series "13 Reasons Why" was intended to be a statement.

It was meant to reveal the graphic nature of suicide — real death — as slow, painful, and ugly. It was designed, according to one of the show's writers, to counterbalance false narratives that portray suicide as a romantic way to prove people wrong or get revenge.

"I stand behind what we did 100%. I know it was right, because my own life was saved when the truth of suicide was finally held up for me to see in all its horror — and reality," wrote "13 Reasons Why" writer Nic Sheff in an Op-Ed for Vanity Fair after the show's premier.

Unfortunately, a new study suggests that while some people who watched the series were inspired to Google information on suicide prevention, just as many wound up searching for information on how to take their own lives.

"Our analyses suggest '13 Reasons Why,' in its present form, has both increased suicide awareness while unintentionally increasing suicidal ideation," John Ayers, a behavioral scientist at San Diego State University and the lead author of the study, wrote in the paper.

13 reasons whyThe study, published July 31 in the Journal of the American Medical Association, looked at how internet searches for suicide changed, both in volume and content, after "13 Reasons Why" was released. The researchers were careful to exclude potential news events related to suicide as well as recent movies with the word "suicide" in them (like "Suicide Squad").

In the roughly two weeks after the show premiered, they noted 900,000 to 1.5 million more searches for topics on suicide than would have been the norm — a 19% increase.

Of the trending searches on the subject that rose most sharply, a majority were about suicidal ideation, or thoughts about how to kill oneself. Searches for the phrase "how to commit suicide," for example, were 26% higher than would have been expected, while the phrases "commit suicide" and "how to kill yourself" were 18% and 9% higher, respectively.

The search results weren't all negative. Some searches related to suicide prevention were also elevated after the show's premier. Queries for the phrase "suicide hotline number," for example, were 21% higher than the norm, while searches for “suicide hotline” were 12% higher and searches for "suicide prevention" were 23% higher.

Regardless of the potential effects on Google searches, it's important to note that the researchers don't know what effect these searches had on behavior. They don't know, for example, whether anyone who Googled "suicide hotline" actually called it — or if anyone who looked up suicide methods attempted to take their own life.

"Additional surveillance will clarify our findings, including estimating changes in suicide attempts or calls to national suicide hotlines," Ayers wrote.

The show's release in March 2017 came almost a year after the release of a study that suggested suicide deaths in the US had surged to a 30-year high. The National Center for Health Statistics analysis found that between 1999 and 2014, suicide rates rose 24%, the highest the country has seen since 1986.

While the most pronounced increases in suicide were in women and middle-aged Americans, suicides also rose sharply among girls aged 10 to 14 — slightly younger than Hannah, the main character in "13 Reasons Why." Although the rise in suicide deaths among this group was low compared to other groups, the spike was still dramatic, researchers told the New York Times.

"This one certainly jumped out," said Sally Curtin, a statistician and author of the study.

If you or someone you know is struggling with depression or has had thoughts of harming themselves or taking their own life, get help. The National Suicide Prevention Lifeline (1-800-273-8255) provides 24/7, free, confidential support for people in distress, as well as best practices for professionals and resources to aid in prevention and crisis situations.

Mindhunter Netflix2 final

David Fincher loves to tell really creepy stories, and his latest contribution to Netflix looks to be just that.

Following his push to get "House of Cards" on Netflix (he's an executive producer on the show), he now brings the streaming giant something completely different, "Mindhunter."

The show follows two 1970s FBI agents who sit down and interview the most sadistic serial killers alive to better understand the mind of a murderer.

It's basically combining two of Fincher's greatest movies, "Zodiac" and "Seven," into a TV show. Fincher will direct a few episodes and is an executive producer along with Charlize Theron.

If you dare to continue on, the trailer is below. Netflix will go live with the series on October 13.

Nintendo's official fix for a tiny bug in the Switch console could take you days to complete

Unfortunately, it's not that unusual for software updates to cause more problems than they fix.

Indeed, it happened recently with Nintendo's new Switch game console, where a firmware update caused problems with the battery indicator for some users. Specifically, the indicators stopped accurately showing the proper battery life for the device after some users installed the update, according to Nintendo Life.

Nintendo Switch

It didn't seem to be a widespread issue, and you wouldn't be affected if you never take the Switch out of its dock. But Nintendo offered a fix, anyway.

Unfortunately for the affected Switch users, Nintendo's fix involves an insane, tedious process that could actually take days to complete. My colleague Ben Gilbert likened the fix to an RPG game where you advance by solving long-winded puzzles.

You can find Nintendo's official fix here, but here's a summary:

  • Turn off "auto-sleep."
  • Charge the Switch to 100%. To make sure it's fully charged (because the bug affects the battery meter), charge the Switch for three hours. You can still use the Switch while it's charging.
  • Once charged, leave the Switch alone for an hour while it's still plugged in.
  • Then, unplug the Switch's power cable and leave the Switch's display on the Home screen for "three to four hours" until the battery is depleted as much as possible.

At this point, you'd already have spent up to eight hours trying to fix the Switch. Hopefully you'd be doing something productive in between steps. But it doesn't end here, there's more:

  • When the battery is almost depleted, turn off the Switch through its settings, then leave it alone for another 30 minutes.
  • Now, repeat these steps several times.

Nintendo then reassures that "the battery charge indicator will improve gradually by repeating this process several times."

Nintendo Switch

But how many times is several? Your guess is as good as mine, as Nintendo doesn't offer a number. It could take you up to eight hours and 30 minutes to complete these steps just once. So, it could take up to 17 hours to complete the steps twice. And Nintendo didn't say to complete these steps "a couple" times. It said "several" times." So you'd likely have to complete these steps three times, minimum. That means it could take you literal days to fix this simple, tiny battery indicator bug.

If you're experiencing the bug on your Switch, I suppose you'd better get to it!

This week's 'Game of Thrones' power rankings: Can you die and still be No. 1?

Game of Thrones

Warning: Spoilers for "Game of Thrones" season seven, episode three, "The Queen's Justice." If you aren't caught up on the series, read at your own risk.

When you play the game of thrones, you win or you die. There is no middle ground.

Now that we're getting closer and closer to the end of the series, that powerful quote from Cersei back in season one (we were all so young!) is proving to be true.

Any week, anyone can go, and anyone can lose or gain a lot of power. And with great power comes great responsibility.

In "The Queen's Justice," there are significant power shifts, as Daenerys loses a major battle and Cersei gets her revenge (but ultimately gets owned in the final moments of the episode).

Every week, we'll round up who had the best week and who had the worst in our power rankings.

Here's the "Game of Thrones" power rankings based on season seven episode three, "The Queen's Justice" in order of who won and who lost.

SEE ALSO: All the biggest moments from 'Game of Thrones' season 7 episode 2

1. Olenna Tyrell

This week, Olenna Tyrell dies like she lived: effortlessly sticking it to her enemies with her biting words. Cersei is responsible for her death, but Olenna makes sure that she won in the end by letting Jaime know she was the one who murdered their son, Joffrey back in season four.

2. Samwell Tarly

Sam successfully cures Ser Jorah Mormont's greyscale without contracting the disease himself. It's a complicated procedure and all he did was follow the instructions — which can be shockingly hard for men to do, especially men in Westeros.

3. Cersei Lannister

It seemed like Cersei would win the power rankings this week, until Olenna Tyrell confesses to Joffrey's murder.

In "The Queen's Justice," Cersei gets her revenge on Ellaria Sand, who killed her only daughter, Myrcella. Cersei also appears to form an alliance with the Iron Bank of Braavos (though their intentions could be misleading), and she successfully plays Daenerys and Tyrion for fools by abandoning her home of Casterly Rock in favor of taking Highgarden from the Tyrells, forever eradicating their bloodline.

Cersei is ranks high this week, but her selfish desire for power and thirst for violence indirectly resulted in the death of all her children and many more people. Also, her lack of interest in marrying Euron Greyjoy could lose her one of her only allies.

Snapchat is going back to college.

The company has asked college newspapers to produce local campus editions for its Discover section this fall semester, according to multiple people familiar with the matter.

Snap has reached out to at least a dozen of the best colleges in the country for the initiative, including Yale, Syracuse, and Dartmouth, per sources.

Snapchat parent Snap Inc. confirmed the initiative when contacted by Business Insider on Tuesday and said that it had quietly tested campus Discover sections with newspapers from UCLA, Dartmouth, Stanford, and the University of Washington last semester.

This is the first time that Snapchat has opened Discover up to less established media companies. Discover currently features daily articles and videos tailored for Snapchat's vertical video format from the likes of The Daily Mail, BuzzFeed, Vice, and The New York Times.

It's also the first time that Snapchat has decided to show hyper-localized versions of Discover to its users. Some larger Discover partners are currently shown in certain countries and not others, but these upcoming campus editions will only be visible to users on each respective college campus.

Snap will monetize its college Discover editions by sharing ad revenue with the school or the student publication. The company paid $58 million to existing Discover partners last year and shares ad revenue with most of them as well.

This won't be the first time that Snap has used its young user base to create content. The app started letting students submit videos and photos to create crowdsourced "Our Stories" about campus life in 2014.

Subscription-based services are taking over television as we know it, and if you want to learn more about the growth and success of subscription-based networks, don't miss Business Insider's flagship conference, IGNITION.

Richard Plepler, CEO of premium TV network HBO, will take stage at Business Insider's flagship event, IGNITION: Future of Media, November 29-30, in New York City.

With the success of Netflix, many other networks have jumped on board with, and recently began offering, standalone services. Hulu, Showtime, and Amazon Prime are just a few examples. HBO launched its standalone subscription-based service, HBO Now, in 2015.

In 2014, Plepler said HBO's "model is building addicts"— and they have certainly done that. Most recently, HBO has seen huge success with "Big Little Lies," which premiered in February. The finale, which aired on April 2, attracted 1.9 million viewers.

Of course with the success of HBO programs comes the success of its subscription service. As of February, HBO Now surpassed 2 million paid subscribers.

Whether it's a "Game of Thrones" spinoff or a second season of "Big Little Lies," we’re interested to see what’s next for Plepler and HBO.

That’s why we’re so excited to learn from Plepler this November.

We’re rolling out the rest of the lineup over the coming months, assembling a unique array of New York stars with the biggest names of Silicon Valley and beyond.

Business Insider IGNITION 2017 will take place November 29-30 at the Time Warner Center in New York City. Right now we're offering Early Bird tickets that will save you $400 — don't miss out!

You can finally buy Nintendo's new $80 mini Super Nintendo later this month

Ever since Nintendo announced the SNES Classic Edition, fans have been frantically looking for a chance to reserve one.

It's easy to understand why: The SNES Classic Edition is a miniaturized version of the original console that works with modern televisions, yet it costs just $80 and comes with 21 games packed in. Better yet: One of those games is the never-before-released "Star Fox 2." When the console launches in September, demand is expected to be very high.

Super NES Classic Edition

Thus, potential buyers have been anxiously anticipating the ability to pre-order the system. It looks like they'll have the chance come late August, when Nintendo says various retailers will open up pre-orders. Nintendo announced as much on Tuesday via Facebook:

"We appreciate the incredible anticipation that exists for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System: Super NES Classic Edition system, and can confirm that it will be made available for pre-order by various retailers late this month. A significant amount of additional systems will be shipped to stores for launch day, and throughout the balance of the calendar year."

It's not clear which retailers that will be just yet, but we expect the usual suspects like Amazon, Walmart, Best Buy, and GameStop.

Of note, Nintendo says the console will be shipped "throughout the balance of the calendar year." That means the SNES Classic Edition is already a limited-edition product; it'll end its production run when 2017 ends, just like the NES Classic Edition before it.

Super NES Classic Edition

The SNES Classic Edition otherwise launches on September 29, and will be available through the end of the year — if you can find one.

Everything you need to know about the Iron Bank of Braavos, which will be important on 'Game of Thrones' next Sunday

Iron Bank Stannis Davos Game of ThronesWarning: Spoilers for "Game of Thrones" season seven, episode three, "The Queen's Justice." If you aren't caught up on the series, read at your own risk.

Sunday's episode of "Game of Thrones" ended with an unexpected turn. The Lannister army, led by Jaime, abandoned its home of Casterly Rock and took Highgarden, while the Unsullied fought a small contingent of Lannisters.

In taking Highgarden, the Tyrell stronghold, Cersei manages to completely erase the Tyrell bloodline from existence.

While it might seem like an act of revenge on Olenna and a clever battle strategy at first, it's a lot more than that if you think about what happened earlier in the episode. Tycho Nestoris, a representative from the Iron Bank of Braavos, shows up in King's Landing to discuss the crown's massive debts with Cersei. And it looks like Cersei's plan to take Highgarden has something to do with the Iron Bank.

But what exactly is the Iron Bank of Braavos, and how influential is their power in the events to come? Find out below:

SEE ALSO: This week's 'Game of Thrones' power rankings: Can you die and still be No. 1?

What is the Iron Bank of Braavos?

The Iron Bank is the main bank of Braavos, and one of the wealthiest banks in the Known World. It often lends money to foreigners, including Lords of the Seven Kingdoms and the King of the Seven Kingdoms. All the Free Cities have banks, but the Iron Bank is richer and more powerful than all of them combined, and is very strict about debts and agreements.

A common saying among the Braavosi is, "The Iron Bank will have its due."

Have we seen it before?

Yes.

In season four, Davos comes up with a clever plan to get a loan from the Iron Bank of Braavos. Stannis and Davos sail to Braavos and meet with Tycho Nestoris and two of his colleagues. Davos wins the loan by explaining that Stannis is the best investment to make if the bank wants the crown's debt paid back — because it doesn't look like the Lannisters are long for this world. Stannis uses the money to re-supply his troops and head to Castle Black, just in time to save them from the wildling attack.

And remember when Mace Tyrell sings his beautiful song in the free city of Braavos in season five? Cersei sent him there accompanied by Meryn Trant to negotiate with the Iron Bank, but it's actually a bribe, which Tycho declines.

What does the taking of Highgarden have to do with all of this?

Pretty much everything, actually.

In season four, Tywin Lannister tells Cersei that one of the reasons he agreed to ally with House Tyrell was its wealth — it could help pay the bank back.

In the same scene, Tywin reveals that the mines of Casterly Rock are barren and have been for years. This little nugget of important information helps Cersei realize that Casterly Rock is of no value to her, despite being her home.

So without any money in King's Landing, Casterly Rock, or from any of her allies — Euron Greyjoy has a lot of ships, leather and eyeliner, but definitely not gold — she has Jaime and his army literally follow the money to Highgarden.

At this point, it's safe to assume that the Lannister army in Highgarden will search the stronghold for gold, and use it to pay the Iron Bank.
