Will David Letterman Surpass Johnny Carson's 30-Year Late Night Run?

$

0

David LettermanLooks like David Letterman may be sticking around late night after all.

The “Late Show” host has been in talks with CBS to extend his contract for a while, but it looks like a final deal should be solidified in the near future.

The New York Times reports:

According to executives who have been involved in discussions with Mr. Letterman’s production company, Worldwide Pants, a deal to remain on the air until 2014 is imminent.

Last year, buzz swarmed about the long-time host bidding adieu to his show in the next few years.

If Letterman’s deal does go through 2014, he will surpass the 30-year run of idol Johnny Carson as the longest running late-night host in history.

Drew Barrymore is so happy with news, she may just do this again.

Rihanna was one of the handful of stars who won People's Choice Awards but were unable to accept their trophies in person on Tuesday night.

But unlike Katy Perry or Lady Gaga, Rihanna was right around the corner watching the Los Angeles Clippers take on the Miami Heat at Staples Center, Ball Don't Lie points out.

In the end, it was probably a smart decision.

Clips-Heat was a thriller, with LA winning 95-89 in overtime and LeBron James turning in one of his token collapses.

The rebuilding efforts for the devastating Haitian earthquake have been ongoing for two years. The island nation is still in tatters and volunteers are on site helping with the process.

According to her Twitter, former Baywatch star and Playboy Playmate Pamela Anderson is pitching in by selling her personal Range Rover and donating all proceeds to Haitian relief.

The eBay sale is currently live. Her white Range Rover, which is surprisingly stock and in a tasteful color combination, has an asking price of just $30,000.

Her supercharged model has just over 75,000 miles and was also featured on the cover of DUB Magazine.

Unfortunately, the eBay site explicitly states that the DUB Magazine isn't included and, even worse, there will be no chance for the buyer to meet Ms. Anderson.

Still, we commend Ms. Anderson for putting up her Range Rover for a good cause.

Do Box Office Earnings Predict Golden Globes Success?

$

Emma Stone George ClooneyThis week, Emma Stone stormed the People's Choice Awards and "The Artist" swept the Critic's Choice Awards.

Sunday, film and TV stars combine their wattage at the precursor to the Oscar's the Golden Globe Awards.

Rather than tell you who we think is going to take home the top prizes, let's let the box office earnings do the talking.

Take a peek at our charts showing which films should win, according to how much money they have earned thus far.

Plus, we show you why box office bucks don't always equal a statue on your mantel.

And it has been that way for at least the past five years. The proof is in the charts.

NOW: Best Motion Picture Award Winner for 2011 By Box Office Earnings

After earning over $169 million at the box office, "The Help" seems likely to take home the Globe over George Clooney's dramedy "The Descendents" about a father reconnecting with his daughters.

THEN: The Past Five Years of Best Picture Comparisons

Best Motion Picture award winners for the past ten years have been evenly divided -- "A Beautiful Mind" took home the award over box office deminator "The Lord of the Rings: Fellowship of the Ring" in 2001, while "The Hours" beat out the LOTR sequel the following year.

In recent years, the Best Motion Picture title has deviated from the highest grossing film. Certainly, we know more eyeballs may not always mean better quality (we're talking to you, “Pirates of the Caribbean On Stranger Tides.”)

NOW: Best Comedy or Musical Award Winner for 2011 by Box Office Earnings

Although Joseph Gordon-Levitt's dramedy about a cancer patient in "50/50" brought in a cool $35 million in theaters, it can't compare with comedy queens Melissa McCarthy and Kristen Wiig.  The funny female summer blockbuster raked in nearly five times the amount that "50/50" did.

larry-king-carlos-slimEXCLUSIVE

Larry King is launching a "huge" online initiative backed by Mexican billionaire Carlos Slim, TheWrap has learned.

Two individuals close to King confirmed that the venture was underway, though details remain sketchy.

Privately, individuals close to King said the venture would be online, which is an interesting departure for the former CNN host, who has spent the entirety of his career in broadcasting.

King has not picked up a new full-time job since December of 2010 when he left the cable news network after 25 years.

King’s lawyer Bert Fields told TheWrap, “I can confirm that there have been discussions in which I participated.”

None of the individuals would go into more detail about the deal because it is not yet finished and thus they did not want to violate their clients’ confidence. It appears Slim in particular wants to muffle any leaks until he is ready to formally announce the project.

Forbes ranks Slim, a telecom magnate whose media holdings also include a sizeable stake in the New York Times, as the richest man in the world with a net worth of $74 billion.

Proof That Olivia Munn's Nude Ads For PETA Are Heavily Photoshopped

Olivia Munn

PETA's latest ad in its "I'd rather go naked than wear fur" campaign features actress/model/comedian Olivia Munn in her birthday suit.

Or at least it appears to.

When I clicked through to the images in PETA's press release -- purely for professional research reasons, you understand -- I was confused.

I thought Olivia Munn was a 31-year-old woman with freckles, cute laugh-lines under her eyes, and honey-tanned skin.

The woman in PETA's ads is freckle- and wrinkle-free, and appears to be an adult-oriented CGI outtake from the recent Tintin movie.

So I poked around on the interwebs and it didn't take long before I found a couple of photos of Munn looking like a normal human being.

When you put them next to PETA's ads, you have to wonder why they went to the effort of obtaining Munn's support for the cause if they didn't want to use her image as currently constituted. It's not as if Munn lacks the physical attributes for the job -- she's probably the most photogenic woman in the U.S. (And how depressing is it that someone at PETA thought a naked Munn wasn't cute enough to be published as is?)

Here's what her face, in a similar pose, looks like when it's not retouched by digital editing software:

Here's the horizontal version of Munn's new PETA ad ...

And here's how she looked at Comic Con in 2009

Everything You Need To Know From Last Night's Golden Globe Awards

KardashianRicky Gervais toned down his insult-heavy hosting act while George Clooney and Seth Rogen brought the jokes.

People who have never seen "The Artist," "The Iron Lady" or HBO's "Enlightened" and "Cinema Verité," have made mental notes to do so, while Rob Lowe has vowed never to get a spray tan again.

We told you this year's Golden Globe awards would be entertaining, and they delivered.

Ricky Gervais hates Kim Kardashian

Second-time host Ricky Gervais came out of the gates with not one, but two, digs at Kim Kardashian during his opening monologue.

The one-two punch:

1.) "The Golden Globes are to the Oscars what Kim Kardashian is to Kate Middleton. A bit louder, a bit trashier, a bit drunker and more easily bought. Allegedly. Nothing's been proved."

2.) "What's with all the divorces? What's going on? Arnold and Maria, J.Lo and Marc Anthony, Ashton and Demi. Kim Kardashian and some guy no one will remember. He wasn't around long. Seventy-two days. A marriage that lasted 72 days. I've sat through longer James Cameron acceptance speeches."

Tina Fey photobombed Amy Poehler

During the announcement for Best Female Actress in a Comedy Series, Tina Fey photobombed her BFF and fellow nominee, Amy Poehler. Too bad they both lost to Laura Dern for her role in HBO's "Enlightened."

Rob Lowe got a bad spray tan

As if it weren't bad enough that Julianne Moore and Rob Lowe had to present the award for Best Mini-Series or TV Movie together with those varying skin tones, the teleprompter then froze, leaving the duo stranded and forced to adlib.

At least Lowe was quick on his (orange) feet, saying, "How about that? When's the last time you did a cold reading in front of Steven Spielberg?"

Elton John Is Seriously Peeved Over Madonna's Golden Globes Win... And It's Caught On Tape (VIDEO)

Madonna Elton

Isn't everyone at these Hollywood awards shows supposed to be friendly to their competition? Or at least pretend to be?

Such was not the case during last night's Golden Globes between fellow Best Original Song nominees, Elton John and Madonna.

When speaking with Carson Daly before the show, Elton told the red carpet host that Madonna's song for "W.E." "doesn't have a f***ing chance."

Later in the show, Elton ate his words, and unabashedly glared his evil eyes, as Madge walked away with the Golden Globes statue in her seriously toned arms.

But it didn't stop there.

Elton John's longtime partner, David Furnish, then took to his Facebook page to write: "Madonna. Best song???? F–k off!!! Madonna winning Best Original Song truly shows how these awards have nothing to do with merit.”

Furnish added that Madge's acceptance speech “was embarrassing in it’s [sic] narcissism...her critisism [sic] of Lady Gaga shows how desperate she really is.”

Those are fighting words!

But despite being able to physically take Elton any day, Madge took the high road, stating: "He’s known to get mad at me, but I adore him... so he’ll win another award, and I don’t feel bad.”

Watch Elton get snarky below:

Guess Which Actress Hasn't Seen Herself Naked in Ten Years?

carey mulliganIf you guessed Carey Mulligan— you are correct!

While Mulligan fully strips down and proudly displays herself in the shower in her latest film, "Shame," in real life, the 26-year-old actress says she is extremely coy.

"I don't wear a bikini on the beach. I walk around my house in pyjamas," Mulligan revealed to The Guardian. "I haven't seen myself naked in the mirror for probably a decade. I'm very prudish."

As for getting in touch with her inner exhibitionist in "Shame," Mulligan says she put her own insecurities aside.

"I tend to clamp up on camera, but this meant working with no inhibitions," Mulligan revealed.

But it appears Mulligan is just a product of how she grew up. When asked if her family is more comfortable in the nude, she responded, "No, no, no, no, no, no. I would scream if I saw any of my family naked, and vice versa."

We wonder if that includes new fiancé, Marcus Mumford?

Why Everyone Hates DC Comics' Weird New Corporate Logo

$

dc comics

DC Comics is set to unveil a new logo (at right) that makes little reference to its comic book heritage -- and designers are already complaining.

The new marque features a sans serif font underneath a stylized "DC" icon in which the D is peeling back from the C. The design appears to be a visual pun on the idea of turning a page or tearing off an outer layer to unveil a secret identity.

It's a sharp break with DC's previous all-American past, in which the logo has variously featured stars, swooshes and even the word "Superman," the company's greatest brand. (The previous logo is featured below.)

The design blog Brand New discovered the logo at the United States Patent and Trademark Office, where it has been filed for 19 different properties. The redesign follows a controversial decision to "reset" DC's entire catalog of superhero story lines back to issue #1, giving their writers a fresh start on all their story lines. Brand New did not like the new design:

There is nothing superhero-ish about it; it could be for any book publisher or sticker maker, and this doesn’t mean the logo has to have a shield or an insignia or swooshes but for a logo working in an industry full of rich visual cues, it’s a shame it can’t draw from it.

dc comicsCommenters liked it even less, with one calling for a protest:

Please contact DC corporate at the two following contacts and let them know your thought. Time to be activists. This is over the line.

DCComicsAdvertising@dccomics.com

http://www.dccomics.com/sites/...

In fact, the new logo harks back to DC's original logo, which featured only plain type. It was only in 2005 that the logo was given a "comic" feel.

Mad Men's new season five poster is so eerily stark -- it doesn't even have the hit show's title -- that those uninitiated in the cult of Don Draper probably thinking that March 25th is national suicide prevention day.

But to the 2.92 million viewers who have been anxiously sipping on their scotch since the summer, anticipating the hit show's delayed return, the image of a suited man falling head first into the red and black text "March 25" is crystal clear.

Mad Men is back. And it's about time. Or else we'd be ready to fling ourselves out of a window, too.

The summer show was delayed due to contract negotiations between creator Matthew Weiner and AMC.

The Jon Hamm directed premier will be two hours long and, as Weiner told the Hollywood Reporter, "It’s a Mad Men movie -- I don’t think anyone’s going to think it’s two episodes spliced together. There is a story that starts in the middle of it [but otherwise] it’s one story. The beginning and the ending are related to each other.”

A Federal Court Will Decide Who Owns This Banana

velvet underground

The most mind-boggling fact inside the lawsuit that The Velvet Underground has filed against The Warhol Foundation is that in the 45 years since "The Velvet Underground & Nico" was released neither the band nor Andy Warhol, who designed the LP cover, bothered to trademark or copyright the banana design.

According to the suit, Warhol supplied the famous artwork in return for a split of the $3,000 advance that MGM paid the band to record the album.

In the intervening years, no one bothered to formally file intellectual property rights to the image, John Cale, Lou Reed and the rest of the band allege in a suit filed in a New York federal court.

The Velvets admit in their court papers that they do not own the banana. They say that the image has long since passed into the "public domain" -- meaning anyone can reproduce it -- but that because the Velvets have been using it on merchandise and retrospectives, in addition to continuing to sell the original record, that the banana has acquired a "secondary meaning as a mark of the VU."

Enter the iPhone: The Warhol Foundation, which controls licensing rights to Warhol's work, recently decided to sell a line of iPhone and iPad cases with the banana on. The Velvets allege:

warhol banana"The Warhol Foundation has sought to justify its unlawful licensing activities involving the Mark by asserting that it has a copyright interest in the Banana design, despite the incontrovertible fact that the Banana design, insofar as copyright rights are concerned, is in the public domain."

The foundation has admitted it doesn't outright own the banana, according to the Velvets' suit. In pre-litigation correspondence, the foundation asserted that it “may have a copyright interest in the Banana design.” (The original design as supplied by Warhol is pictured at right.)

That's a long way from actually owning it.

The foundation has yet to file a response.
