Doctor Who Peter Capaldi

April 15 marks the beginning of the end for Peter Capaldi on BBC America's "Doctor Who."

At the end of the upcoming 10th season, Capaldi will wrap up his three-season run as the time-traveling, human-loving protector of the universe, the 12th official regeneration of the Doctor.

Capaldi's still-unnamed replacement will take on a tradition that dates back to 1963 and includes 14 men who have played the role over nearly five decades.

But as the search is on for Capaldi's successor, it's a great time to remind ourselves of the Doctors who won our appreciation and those who didn't.

Here is every Doctor Who ranked from the worst to the best:

DON'T MISS: 18 TV shows you're watching that are probably going to be canceled

14. Peter Cushing (1965-1966)

As a rule, we can't let someone who didn't play the Doctor for an actual TV season outrank those who did. That's the case for Peter Cushing, who played the doctor in two movies during the show's William Hartnell years: 1965's "Dr. Who and the Daleks" and 1966's "Daleks – Invasion Earth: 2150 A.D." He had the misfortune of playing the doctor during the early years, which pulled heavily from the mad-scientist stock character and hadn't quite revealed his warmer side.

13. Paul McGann (The Eighth Doctor, 1996)

Paul McGann was considered highly unremarkable in the 1996 TV movie "Doctor Who." That may explain why it took another nine years before BBC brought back the series. He was given a chance to prove himself in the role again in a 2013 mini-episode in which his decision to fight in the Time War gave us John Hurt's the War Doctor. For that, we owe him our thanks.

12. John Hurt (The War Doctor, 2013)

Yes, it's kind of confusing where the late John Hurt's incarnation of the doctor, the War Doctor, fits into the picture. Though he appears for the first time during 2013's 50th-anniversary special alongside Matt Smith's Eleventh Doctor, the War Doctor actually lands after Paul McGann's Eighth Doctor.

Hurt won over fans with his portrayal of the doctor who chose to fight in the show's epic Time War.

Fun fact: At 74, Hurt was the oldest person to play the Doctor and appeared alongside Smith, who at 26 when signing on, was the youngest person to play the role.

Samsung's new phone is powerful enough to run Nintendo GameCube games

The newest version of Samsung's best smartphone, the Galaxy S8, is quite a powerful little device.

Samsung Galaxy S8

Beyond what Samsung's telling us about the phone's internals, we've got an even better example of just how much horsepower the S8 is packing: One intrepid YouTuber managed to get the Nintendo GameCube running on the phone.

And yes, so we're clear, we're talking about Nintendo's fourth major game console — the little box known as GameCube:

Nintendo GameCube

The GameCube is home to some of Nintendo's biggest games: "The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker," "Super Smash Bros. Melee," "Mario Kart: Double Dash," and many more. It was Nintendo's response to the PlayStation 2 from Sony and the original Xbox from Microsoft, and it's a beloved console among millions.

And Samsung's new phone, the Galaxy S8, is capable of re-creating the entire experience — "emulating" the console and its games. That's no easy task; it's tremendously taxing on processors to re-create an entire piece of hardware, even though said piece of hardware is over a decade old.

Even more impressively, the S8 does it smoothly — see for yourself:

The S8 isn't available to buy just yet; it's up for sale as of April 21, and costs around $700. When it does arrive, you can download the GameCube emulator (known as "Dolphin") and test out this stuff for yourself. One note of caution: emulation is a legal gray area.

Notably, Nintendo's new Switch console doesn't offer access to Nintendo GameCube games — not yet, anyway. Nintendo's said it will have more to share on that front later in 2017.

lost best tv shows

Damon Lindelof is the co-creator of suspenseful series like “Lost” and “The Leftovers,” which you might be tempted to watch at a dizzying pace. But Lindelof would much rather you didn’t.

In fact, Lindelof recently sent a letter to critics begging them not to binge-watch the episodes of "The Leftovers" he was sending, he recounted on the KCRW podcast, “The Business.”

“I am a complete and total hypocrite,” Lindelof admitted, saying he was prone to binge himself. But at the same time, Lindelof thinks we should try to exercise some degree of restraint in our watching habits. He said some shows were good to binge, particularly comedies, but that we lose something when we consume shows at such incredible velocity.

What exactly do we lose? “This idea of anticipation” of the next episode, according to Lindelof. “That Christmas morning feeling …. doesn’t exist in binge culture.”

Lindelof isn’t the only Hollywood superstar to caution against binge-watching recently.

Last month, “Buffy” and “Firefly” creator Joss Whedon said that if shows are made for binge-watching, there is a sense of narrative that is lost. He worries that people don't take time to really breathe and understand what happened in a given episode.

“It loses its power, and we lose something with it,” he said of binge-watching. "We lose our understanding of narrative. Which is what we come to television for."

Subscription-based services are taking over television as we know it, and if you want to learn more about the growth and success of subscription-based networks, don't miss Business Insider's flagship conference, IGNITION.

Richard Plepler, CEO of premium TV network HBO, will take stage at Business Insider's flagship event, IGNITION: Future of Media, November 29-30, in New York City.

With the success of Netflix, many other networks have jumped on board with, and recently began offering, standalone services. Hulu, Showtime, and Amazon Prime are just a few examples. HBO launched its standalone subscription-based service, HBO Now, in 2015.

In 2014, Plepler said HBO's "model is building addicts"— and they have certainly done that. Most recently, HBO has seen huge success with "Big Little Lies," which premiered in February. The finale, which aired on April 2, attracted 1.9 million viewers.

Of course with the success of HBO programs comes the success of its subscription service. As of February, HBO Now surpassed 2 million paid subscribers.

Whether it's a "Game of Thrones" spinoff or a second season of "Big Little Lies," we’re interested to see what’s next for Plepler and HBO.

That’s why we’re so excited to learn from Plepler this November.

We’re rolling out the rest of the lineup over the coming months, assembling a unique array of New York stars with the biggest names of Silicon Valley and beyond.

Business Insider IGNITION 2017 will take place November 29-30 at the Time Warner Center in New York City. Right now we're offering Extra-Early Bird tickets that will save you $1,000 — don't miss out!

orange is the new black season five premiere netflix

Netflix just gave us a taste of what to expect on the upcoming season of "Orange Is the New Black," which premieres Friday, June 9.

The streaming company released the first minute of season five, which will take place in real-time over three days.

On the season-four finale, the inmates were enraged by Poussey's (Samira Wiley) untimely death and things quickly escalated into a full-blown riot. In the final moments, it all came to a head when Daya (Dascha Polanco) got hold of a gun.

Picking up right where we left off, the new clip centers on Daya, surrounded by screaming inmates and pointing the gun at a prison guard. Meanwhile, Piper (Taylor Schilling) and Alex (Laura Prepon) have resolved to stay out of trouble just as they arrive to see the riot, and their new resolution is instantly challenged.

At the end of the minute, the image cuts out, but we hear a gunshot. We'll have to wait to see where things go.

Fate of the Furious Universal

March holdovers "Beauty and the Beast" and "The Boss Baby" are the only things keeping the Hollywood box office afloat right now, so Universal's "The Fate of the Furious" couldn't come at a better time.

The eighth movie in the "Fast and Furious" franchise (opening Friday), with wall-to-wall hype, is projected to take in major coin over the weekend, and it could even top the unprecedented success of "Furious 7." Estimates range between $380 million and $400 million worldwide, according to Variety. Domestically the movie should easily take in over $100 million.

Releasing its title in 63 markets globally and showing on the most IMAX screens ever for a movie, Universal is expecting fans of the franchise to come out in droves and pay top dollar to watch Vin Diesel, Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson, and "Fast and Furious" newbie Charlize Theron drive fast and do insane stunts.

However, the movie has a big hill to climb if it plans to top the opening "Furious 7" had.

The 2015 hit broke the record for biggest opening weekend in April with $147.1 million domestically, and worldwide it took in $397.7 million, leading to the movie eventually earning $1.5 billion worldwide over its theatrical run, by far the largest haul for any movie in the franchise.

How 'Silicon Valley' keeps everything so true to the real-life tech world

$

dr dre silicon valley hbo

You may not have picked up on the connection between gangsta rap and tech-savvy comedy "Silicon Valley," but it's there.

Something "Silicon Valley" creator Mike Judge reportedly heard the rap pioneer and former NWA member Dr. Dre say became a running mantra on the HBO show.

"We really do pride ourselves on trying to get it right," "Silicon Valley" executive producer Clay Tarver told Business Insider while promoting the new release of season three on DVD and Blu-ray.

"We spend a lot of time on research," Tarver said. "Mike Judge always references this Dr. Dre quote: 'If it plays in the hood, it will play everywhere.' And that was sort of the idea. If we get it right for the people who know, I think everyone else — even if they don't get every reference or dog whistle — they'll sense some authenticity here."

Staying true to that philosophy has served the show well. "Silicon Valley" is often lauded by tech pros for getting the details of the industry right — from what people wear to the tricks of the trade and spoofing the valley's biggest players.

"The truth is almost any of the details that we have here in the show, the real ones are always more interesting than something we could make up," Tarver said.

The show, which returns for its fourth season on April 23, goes to great lengths to preserve its authenticity, including through its research team. In many cases, it's that team's job to temper the dreams of the writers and producers with actual examples in the real world.

"We have a really heavy research team that does a great job," Tarver said. "We'll have an idea of maybe what we're looking for. They'll go and research it and they come back with, 'How about this?' And it's a little different than what we were thinking, but almost always, as I said, the real thing is more interesting than something a bunch of writers can make up."

The show will also bring on consultants who are actually experiencing what's happening on the show. On the third season, for example, Pied Piper was finally ready to offer its data-compression system to the market. In order to make that launch as realistic as possible, the show brought on the creator of real-life startup Simplivity, which makes a very similar hardware box for businesses.

"We really wanted to know what it's like for a small company when it goes from being in a house into an office," Tarver said. "For example, we talked to a bunch of companies and they were like, 'Oh, well, the first thing is there would be a bunch of sales guys nobody knows.' And, of course, we put that in."

Yet despite all the planning and research, the tech industry moves at lightning speed. It can be tough for a show with a long production cycle to keep up. So, the show's authenticity has also benefited from a little luck.

"It's brutal," Tarver told us of the industry's breakneck pace. "Something will be in the news, and everyone will be like, 'That should be on your show!' But if you think about it, we start writing in June, start shooting in October, and the thing doesn't air until April. So it could be both your friend and your enemy. We've really been lucky, because a lot of things we've touched on we feel like they've unfolded in the real world in a nice way."

The wife of the Alabama governor who just resigned orchestrated his downfall after she caught him cheating

When a former Alabama governor started sending suggestive texts to a member of his staff, he probably didn't expect them to sync onto the state-issued iPad he had given his wife.

On Monday, Robert Bentley, 74, resigned from his role as Alabama's governor after an ethics report concluded he used state resources to conceal an affair with his adviser, Rebekah Caldwell Mason.

But the scandal truly began in 2013, when Bentley's wife Dianne became suspicious of the budding relationship.

In March 2014, Dianne Bentley placed a recorder inside her purse and discovered that her husband called Mason and declared his love for her — a minute after his wife left the room.

Bentley's efforts to dispose of the recordings led to many of the misuse of funds accusations he would later plead guilty to.

On the night of his re-election in the 2014 gubernatorial race, Bentley was allegedly convinced that his opponent had a copy of the recording and told Alabama Law Enforcement Secretary Spencer Collier to travel to Greenville to retrieve it.

His wife's chief of staff Heather Hannah also claimed that Bentley told her she would "never work in the state of Alabama again" if she told anyone about the affair, the 130-page ethics report outlines.

After repeatedly finding her husband's inappropriate text messages, Dianne Bentley filed for divorce from her husband of 50 years in 2015.

Some of the text messages Bentley sent Mason include:

  • "You look beautiful and feel so soft."
  • "Bless our hearts. And other parts."
  • "I love you, Rebekah 😍😍 "

bentley investigation

After Bentley discovered that his wife was reading his text messages, he started using "burner phones" to communicate with Mason.

He fired Collier by the time the administration began investigating his misuse of state funds in 2016. Rebekah Mason alabama governor scandalA day after he was let go, Collier finally confirmed the existence of the affair to the press.

The governor's wife then released pages and pages of phone conversations and text messages to the ethics committee to help the investigation.

Bentley denied doing anything illegal or improper up until his resignation on Monday.

"I have decided that it is time for me to step down as Alabama's governor," Bentley said at a press conference Monday evening. "The time has come for me to look for new ways to serve the people of our great state."

State lawmakers were in the middle of deciding whether to impeach him when Bentley agreed to plead guilty to two misdemeanors, repay the misused funds, and never hold public office again.

nintendo switch console launchGetting your hands on a Nintendo Switch isn’t easy.

It has been over a month since the console hit shelves, but stores still can’t keep up with demand. In an earnings call a few weeks ago, GameStop COO Tony Bartel said that despite Nintendo doubling its Switch production, he expects the retailer to be chasing supply all the way into 2018.

Sure, you could buy one from a reseller on Amazon or eBay, but those consoles will be way above market price, and nobody likes getting gouged. So if you want to get a Switch before 2018, you're going to have to stay on your toes.

Here are the best ways to keep track of Nintendo Switch stock at all the major retailers where it's sold:

Target

If you want to make sure that you find a Switch in stock at Target, you're going to have to do it the old fashioned way: by checking on their website for availability at your local store.

Alternatively, you can look up your local store's number and call to ask if they know when the next shipment will come in.

Toys "R" Us

Like Target, you are going to have to be checking the Toys "R" Us website constantly until they post an update.

However, you can also follow the toy giant on Twitter for updates on when they will next have Nintendo's console in stock. If you find a tweet like the one below, confirm with your local store that they will indeed be receiving a shipment.

Your store's team will also be able to tell you when the best time to line up is to ensure that you are able to leave with a Switch.

Best Buy

Your best bet for making sure you find a switch in stock at Best Buy is to follow the company on social media. They regularly post updates regarding the Switch on Twitter and Facebook.

For Best Buy, also be sure to check their weekly circular and sign up for their email newsletter, as both will say whether or not there will be consoles in stock that week.

Fox News executives are reportedly debating whether Bill O'Reilly should keep his job

Bill O'Reilly

Fox News executives may be talking about giving Bill O'Reilly the boot.

O'Reilly announced on his show Tuesday that he was taking a vacation, but New York Magazine cited four network sources who said Tuesday night's program could be O'Reilly's last on the network.

"The assumption is that he’ll exit in a non-embarrassing way," one senior Fox News staffer told the magazine.

O'Reilly insisted his vacation had nothing to do with a sexual harassment scandal currently disrupting his brand. The matter has led dozens of advertisers to pull their commercials from the time slot in which his show, "The O'Reilly Factor" airs.

Fox News representatives also told BuzzFeed News that O'Reilly was expected to return on April 24.

"[Around] this time of year, I grab some vacation because it's spring and Easter time," O'Reilly said on Tuesday's show. "Last fall I booked a trip that should be terrific."

Although New York Magazine's sources say network co-president Bill Shine was attempting to save O'Reilly, the matter rests solely on the shoulders of the Murdoch family, which includes Rupert Murdoch, the chairman of Fox News, and James Murdoch, 21st Century Fox CEO.

"It’s up to the family," one senior Fox News official said.

The Murdochs, however, seem to be divided on O'Reilly's future, according to New York Magazine. Two officials from Fox News said that James Murdoch was opting to cut O'Reilly's show, however, Rupert and his older brother Lachlan were fighting to keep the controversial commentator on.

The program is one of the network's top-rated shows and a consistent top-performer among other cable news programs.

The network has been in this situation before, amid a similar harassment ordeal surrounding former Fox News chairman and CEO Roger Ailes, who resigned in July 2016.

Despite an advertiser exodus, "The O'Reilly Factor" has seen a surge in viewership. O'Reilly's April 4 show alone managed to draw 3.76 million viewers.

But according to New York Magazine, legal pressures are also mounting. Attorneys from Paul, Weiss — a prestigious law firm known for taking on high-profile clients — was hired to do a "deep dive" investigation into O'Reilly's history, honing in on the claims made by Wendy Walsh, a frequent guest of the show who accused O'Reilly of sexual harassment.

Here's everyone on Arya Stark's kill list and why

Arya Stark Game of Thrones

Ayra Stark has transformed a lot over the course of six seasons of "Game of Thrones." At the beginning of the HBO series, she's a spunky high-born girl who wants to learn how to fight with a sword instead of learning how to make a dress. Early in the show, Arya begins a list of the people she wants to kill that she repeats to herelf every night.

So we've known for a while that Arya would become a full-blown assassin one day, and now we're here.

She's already offed some people on her list, and some have been offed for her (something she's not very enthusiastic about). But now, as we enter season seven (premiering July 16), she's back in Westeros, reminding enemies of the Stark name who she is while she slowly kills them. Who will be next?

Here's everyone on Arya's kill list, who's left, and why:

SEE ALSO: All the 'Game of Thrones' deaths, ranked from least tragic to most tragic

Cersei Lannister

Why: She falsely accused Arya's father, Ned Stark, of treason and had him arrested, which led to his execution.

Status: Alive, and sitting on the Iron Throne. And probably drinking lots of wine, which makes her an easy target.

Ilyn Payne

Why: For executing Ned Stark on Joffrey's orders.

Status: Alive. We haven't seen him in a long time. He's not as important as some others on the list who are still walking around Westeros with beating hearts.

Melisandre

Why: For taking Gendry away from the Brotherhood Without Banners.

Status: Alive and really, really old, and exiled from Winterfell by Jon Snow. She's headed south, and the last time we saw Arya, she was in the Riverlands. So it's pretty likely that they'll cross paths. Maybe Arya will forgive her for bringing Jon Snow back to life. But probably not.

Jimmy Kimmel reveals Sean Spicer's 'inner voice' during Hitler comment: 'Did I just defend Hitler?'

Spicer Hitler comments MSNBC final

On Tuesday, White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer made the puzzling claimthat unlike Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, Adolf Hitler never stooped to the level of using chemical weapons. He was referring to the gas attack in Syria earlier this month that killed dozens, including young children.

This is false. Hitler infamously gassed millions of Jewish people, LGBTQ people, and others during World War II.

The reaction to Spicer's comments instantly spread through social media. And the awkward moment was red meat for the late-night shows.

"Jimmy Kimmel Live!" took on the task of imagining what was going on in Spicer's head when he made the comments.

“If you listen very closely you can almost hear the voice inside his head,” Kimmel said.

Footage of Spicer's comments were then played on the show. The shot tightens while the audio lowers on Spicer to reveal Spicer's "inner voice."

“Oh no, did I just defend Hitler? Hitler!” the voice says.

"At press secretary school the one rule was never defend Hitler," he goes on to say. “Of course Hitler gassed people. I learned that in high school. We all did. What the hell are you doing, Sean?”

After the footage Kimmel said, "Sean Spicer might be the only press secretary who needs a press secretary."

Spicer tried to clarify his comments by saying that Hitler was "not using the gas on his own people, the same way that Assad was doing," which only led to more scorn on social media. He later apologized for his comments, though he made two more unfortunate blunders in doing that.

Watch Kimmel showing Spicer's "inner voice" below:

A gorgeous new 'Star Wars' game just leaked

$

Are you ready for a big new "Star Wars" game? One where you'll see the Death Star explode, where you'll encounter classic characters like Yoda and new classics like Kylo Ren?

Star Wars Battlefront 2

Because that's exactly what you should expect from "Star Wars Battlefront 2," a new game that was just revealed through a leaked trailer.

The trailer, which popped up late on Tuesday evening, showcases a new "Star Wars" game that takes place in the wake of the events of "Return of the Jedi." You appear to play as a Stormtrooper, enacting her "last orders" following the explosion of the Death Star.

Star Wars Battlefront 2

"Avenge our emperor" a voice shouts, before a montage of space battles — the "last order" in question, it would seem.

The sequence with the Stormtrooper points to a single-player campaign mode, and that's important because the first "Star Wars Battlefront" game (from 2015) was sorely lacking exactly that. While gorgeous, 2015's "Battlefront" game was ridiculously light on content. What was there — a very pretty multiplayer shooter — felt shallow compared with major multiplayer franchises like "Battlefield."

That doesn't mean this new "Battlefront" won't have a focus on multiplayer.

Star Wars Battlefront 2

The next section of trailer is dedicated to exactly that, which will once again cross "eras" in the "Star Wars" universe. A fight between Yoda and Darth Maul, for instance, doesn't make canonical sense — yet that's exactly what's teased in the new trailer.

"Star Wars Battlefront 2" doesn't have a release date, and the trailer only says it's coming to PlayStation 4. That said, we'd guess it'll arrive later this year — around the release date of the "Star Wars: The Last Jedi" movie release, perhaps? — and it'll be on the Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC. The game's publisher, EA, isn't saying just yet; the full announcement is expected later this week at the annual "Star Wars Celebration" event in Florida.

Update: The trailer has since been removed.

Chelsea Handler refuses Sean Spicer's apology: 'He can’t possibly be that stupid naturally'

Screen Shot 2017 04 12 at 10.02.29 AM

Comedian Chelsea Handler was on “Conan” Tuesday night, and she did not withhold her feelings about Sean Spicer, who made controversial and false comments earlier in the day saying Hitler didn’t use chemical weapons during World War II.

"How about that Sean Spicer baked potato guy?" Handler said, when host Conan O’Brien asked her about watching press briefings as entertainment. "He’s so stupid. He can’t possibly be that stupid naturally."

Instead, Handler suspects that Trump is behind the comments.

"Before he [Spicer] goes out there, he’s [Trump] like, 'Say something about Hitler and, yeah, the Holocaust. Say something about that,'" she said. "He has to just go out there and lie on the daily. Over and over again."

“Yeah, that was a strange moment at the press conference today,” O’Brien said. “I think before we went on the air, he apologized for that remark.”

Spicer did indeed apologize for his remarks, though he ended up making two more unfortunate blunders in his apology.

“Whatever. That means nothing at this point,” Handler said of the apology.

When O’Brien asked what Handler's problem with Ivanka Trump is, she said, "That she’s in that family. That she hasn’t divorced herself publicly from her father. As a woman, I would never let my father run for president knowing what I know about my father."

“That brings up a whole other can of worms,” O’Brien said.

THE MIST frances conroy

Horror writer Stephen King has contributed to many of our collective fears, from furry companions in "Pet Sematary" and "Cujo" to clowns in "It." You can now add clouds to that list.

A new television series based on the Stephen King story "The Mist" (also made into a 2007 movie) will have you looking twice at the sky.

Premiering Thursday, June 22, at 10 p.m., the 10-episode Spike TV drama focuses on a family in conflict and their neighbors after a brutal crime in their small town. To add to their misery, an eerie mist rolls in and suddenly cuts off the town from the rest of the world and, in some cases, each other. On Tuesday, during a White House press briefing, Press Secretary Sean Spicer said that Hitler "didn't even sink to using chemical weapons" in a moment that quickly sparked public outrage.

To some critics, the comment — and even Spicer's subsequent apology — felt like it was straight out of political satire. And someone took advantage of that by mashing up Spicer's comments with the iconic ending credits from HBO's "Veep" in a video that's quickly going viral.

It's a fitting time to do so, because "Veep" returns for its sixth season on Sunday.

The mashup is so spot-on that the show's star, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, tweeted it herself with praise:

Charlie Murphy, the comic best known for being in "Chappelle's Show" and the brother of Eddie Murphy, died on Wednesday in a New York City hospital, according to TMZ.

The site said that, according to Murphy's manager, the comedian had leukemia and had been undergoing chemotherapy.

He was 57.

Murphy became a standout on Dave Chappelle's Comedy Central show for telling hilarious stories about his encounters with famous people while with Eddie Murphy at the height of his fame in the 1980s.

His first, and arguably greatest, sketch from "Chappelle's Show" is when he recalls his encounters with musician Rick James. In another instance, he recalled when he and his friends played Prince and his entourage in a late-night game of basketball.

Here's his famous Rick James sketch:

This chart shows how Netflix's originals keep getting better and better (NFLX)

stranger things netflixNetflix continues to invest billions on its programming, and that is paying off big-time, according to a new Morgan Stanley Alphawise survey.

Netflix is set to spend $6 billion on content in 2017, more than rival Amazon, which JPMorgan estimates will spend $4.5 billion, and many times HBO.

Though Netflix doesn’t break out exactly how much of that is going towards its original shows and movies, Netflix's CFO said last year that the company is moving toward a 50/50 mix of original and licensed content.

What we do know is that Netflix will release a whopping 1,000 hours of original content by the end of this year, which would take you 41 days to binge-watch if you sat down and viewed it straight.

That is a huge bet, and it seems to be working. How well? 33% of respondents to Morgan Stanley’s survey said Netflix had the best original programming of any streaming service or premium TV network. Not just good: “the best.” That’s up from 17% in 2014.

This year, Netflix snagged its first Golden Globe in a major show category when "The Crown" won best drama series. ("Stranger Things" was nominated in the same category.) Netflix is also rolling out new show formats at a rapid clip, from its game-show debut "Ultimate Beastmaster," to locally-produced shows from regions around the world.

That doesn't mean everything has been a hit. For instance, Netflix's latest Marvel series, "Iron Fist," was trashed by critics.

But still, if Morgan Stanley's survey is any indication, Netflix's quality keeps going up and up, even in a "peak TV" world of 455 scripted TV shows in 2016.

Here’s the chart that shows Netflix’s progress since 2014 in the survey:

This trend could be instrumental in driving subscriber growth, as Morgan Stanley found that original programming is rising as one of the top reasons Netflix users subscribe to the service.

This is true especially around marquee original shows that come back every year, according to Netflix management. In January, Netflix CFO David Wells said that the company has found returning shows do a better job of boosting subscriber growth than brand-new ones.

"If they are brand new shows ... if they are having to punch into the consciousness of the consumer, they do not tend to draw new subscribers in as great of numbers as some of our existing shows," Wells said.
