The NBA and gaming company Take-Two Interactive, which owns 2K and Rockstar Games, have formed a joint venture to create an esports league around the NBA 2K video game, The Wall Street Journal reports.

This represents a significant step forward for the esports industry.

The competitive gaming league will launch in 2018 and be made up of teams operated by NBA franchises. No teams have committed yet, but all 30 have an expressed interest in participating, according to NBA Commissioner Adam Silver, and he expects about half of them to form a team for the inaugural season. Coverage is likely to involve both online and TV broadcasts.

This is a big step for esports, which is on track to reach $696.3 million in 2017 and $1.5 billion by 2020, according to gaming-centric research firm Newzoo. It’s the first time a US professional sports league has created its own esports league and could pave the way for others to follow suit, giving esports an added sheen of legitimacy and potentially a broader audience.

There are unknown quantities around this venture that are natural given the nascency of esports. The NBA and Take-Two Interactive will need to shape deals with broadcasters, advertisers, and sponsors. Since the latter drive the lion’s share of esports revenue, these broadcast audiences will have to be large enough so as to warrant investments from brands.

Perched on a promontory overlooking Los Angeles is a true Beverly Hills palace. The crown jewel of the exclusive Trousdale Estates neighborhood, the property once belonged to comedian Danny Thomas, who starred in "The Danny Thomas Show" (aka "Make Room For Daddy") and founded St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. Thomas built the home in 1970 and later sold it for $15 million after his wife died in 2000.

Now it's finally off the market, having found a buyer in investor Evan Metropoulos for $65 million, according to the Wall Street Journal. The home had originally been listed for $135 million in 2015 by agent Aaron Kirman, who previously sold a neighboring property to Minecraft inventor Markus Persson for $70 million in 2014.

Metropoulos is a principal at investment firm Metropoulos & Co., as is his brother, Daren, who bought the Playboy Mansion for $100 million last year.

Brittany Fowler contributed reporting on an earlier version of this article.

The 18,000-square-foot mansion sits on two-and-a-half acres in Beverly Hills' swanky Trousdale Estates neighborhood, which is also home to celebrities like Elton John and Jane Fonda.

It's one of the most expensive homes ever sold in Beverly Hills.

Almost half of couples 'Netflix cheat' on each other, and it varies by country (NFLX)

orange is the new black alex

Almost half of couples who watch Netflix together have "cheated" on each other by watching episodes of a TV show ahead of their partner, according to a new survey by Netflix.

Netflix found that of the 46% who had "Netflix cheated," 81% had done it multiple times, with 44% doing it more than three times.

The cheating varied by country. The biggest culprits were Brazil (57%) and Mexico (58%), while Netherlands was the most loyal with only 27%.

How can you stop your partner from Netflix cheating?

Last year Cornetto, the British ice cream company, came up with a fun way. The company created “Commitment Rings,” which used NFC technology to make sure you were only watching a show when your partner was there. The idea was to select a particular show using an app, and then have it only be able to play when the rings were physically close together.

Though the concept doesn't seem to have caught on, the technology could definitely work (if Netflix allowed the integration).

Here was the original concept video:

Netflix also put together some profiles of different types of cheaters, based on the survey.

Which one of these are you?

Nick CannonNick Cannon says that he is leaving NBC’s “America’s Got Talent” after a falling out with the network over a joke told on a Showtime comedy special.

In the special, Cannon told a racially charged joke employing “NBC” as an acronym incorporating a racial slur. In a lengthy Facebook post Monday, Cannon claimed that NBC executive threatened to terminate him over the joke.

“After days of deliberating over some extremely disappointing news that I was being threatened with termination by Executives because of a comedy special that was only intended to bring communities closer together, I was to be punished for a joke,” Cannon wrote. He continued, “So I wish AGT and NBC the best in its upcoming season but I can not see myself returning.”

Representatives for Cannon and NBC did not respond to a request for comment.

Cannon has served as host of “America’s Got Talent” since 2009. The show is consistently NBC’s highest rated offering during the summer months.

Adele may have won best album at the Grammys, but the biggest winner of the night was William Bell — at least by Spotify streams.

77-year-old Bell won an award for best Americana album, for his "This Is Where I Live," which is his first release on a major label in almost 40 years, according to The Los Angeles Times.

"Wow, this is quite a surprise," he said. "I am very humbled by it and glad to be here after all these years and still viable in the industry.

Spotify said that streams for the singer-songwriter's iconic blues song, "Born Under A Bad Sign" (co-written by Booker T. Jones), jumped a whopping 4,950%. Bell's total streams as an artist rose 680% in the wake of his Grammys win.

Here were a few other artists who saw big post-Grammy jumps, according to Spotify:

  • Cynthia Erivo — also 680%
(Performed The Beach Boys' "God Only Knows" with John Legend)
  • Sturgill Simpson — 346%
(Winner of Best Country Album, performed "All Around You")
  • Morris Day — 344%
(Performed a Prince tribute with Bruno Mars)
  • Chance The Rapper — 206%
(Winner of Best New Artist, Best Rap Album and Best Rap Performance, performed "How Great" and "All We Got" with Kirk Franklin)

A note on Spotify's methodology: "The increases were calculated by comparing the number of streams that took place in the hour following the show with the exact same hour the week before."

Josh Elliott and CBS News are parting ways.

The New York Post's Page Six reports that Elliott was fired surrounding fallout over his on-air announcement on Friday that he was leaving his job as the anchor on CBS' digital channel, CBSN, for a broader role on CBS News.

The column's sources say that Elliott's announcement was premature and CBS executives didn't know he was going to quit the digital job.

"This is a mess of epic proportions," a network source told Page Six. "Nobody at the top at CBS News knew that Josh was going to do that."

Elliott reportedly met with CBS News executives on Monday morning, was fired, and then was escorted out of the building by security.

CBS News released the following statement:

"CBS News and Josh Elliott are parting ways. Josh will no longer be reporting for CBS News. We are grateful for his contributions over the last year, and we wish him the very best in his future endeavors."

Over the past few years, Elliott jumped from ABC's "Good Morning America" to NBC News before landing at CBS about a year ago.

Hollywood's obsession with China is just getting started — here's why

$
0
0

iron man chinaWith China’s box office on track to overtake America’s any year now, Hollywood is increasingly focused on Chinese audiences and Beijing censors. Aynne Kokas, author of "Hollywood in China," explains what we have in store.

--

As China’s media market grows, foreign media companies will increasingly need to consider the Chinese market first when developing content.

The power of the Chinese market is such that Hollywood producers will ignore the interests of Chinese audiences and regulators at great financial risk. “Made in China” will be a marketing strategy rather than a way to cut costs. If the market continues to grow, rather than simply being made in China, new productions will increasingly be made for China.

Greater focus on the Chinese market in the development process will likely mean more China-related content for global audiences. The upside of Hollywood producing content for China is that it may diversify the type of stories that Hollywood studios produce, as well as the types of people represented on the screen. Yet greater focus on the Chinese market also may privilege content that is more likely to be accepted by Chinese regulators. As a result, Hollywood’s accommodation of the Chinese market could substantially shift the type of media produced—not only for China, but also for other global markets.

Compounding this trend, Chinese outbound capital has begun to have substantial influence in Hollywood. Hollywood is increasingly a destination for media investment by Chinese companies in individual projects, in US-based offices, and even entire studios.

Alibaba reportedly invested in the 2015 Hollywood film "Mission: Impossible—Rogue Nation." The China Film Group has been linked as an investor to the record-breaking "Furious 7" movie. Chinese entertainment and technology firm LeTV established its US offices in Los Angeles in 2015. In April 2015, Chinese film studio Huayi Bros. made an agreement with American motion picture company STX entertainment to co-produce and co-distribute 12 to 15 films. In January 2016, the Dalian Wanda Group acquired American studio Legendary Pictures, making it the first Chinese firm to own a Hollywood studio.

Rather than made in China, Hollywood studio productions will also increasingly be made by China—or rather, by Chinese companies investing in Hollywood.

the great wall universalIf China’s outbound investment in Hollywood increases, the Chinese government will have less need to accommodate Hollywood capital and technical investment in China. As more distribution moves to networked digital platforms, the incentive structure for Chinese collaborations with Hollywood is likely to shift from collaboration to competition. The increasing role of digital platforms in media distribution is poised to diminish the potential impact American companies can have within Chinese media markets.

Chinese media investment in the United States, by contrast, shows no signs of slowing down.

Depending on its scope, Chinese FDI could reshape our understanding of the global cultural dominance of the US motion picture industry, radically expanding what cultural critic Rey Chow termed Chinese cinema’s “becoming-visible” to global audiences.

As I have argued, Hollywood’s relationship with China has already begun to leave a substantial global footprint as the result of collaborations on big-budget film releases and record-breaking shared theme park and studio investment. The Chinese Dream and the Hollywood dream factory are becoming ever-more entwined as Chinese media firms expand outward into the United States, and as the media and technology sectors continue to converge. But China and Hollywood remain in competition for global dominance—much as the United States and the PRC compete in the diplomatic realm.

In parallel, as Chinese content regulations become more significant to international media production, global commercial media culture may become subject to more demanding content restrictions to which foreign producers may voluntarily agree because of their desire for access to the Chinese market.

Collaborations advancing the Hollywood dream factory and the China dream may also crowd out content from other locales or in less commercial forms, thereby limiting rather than expanding the types of entertainment available to the global public.

Although seemingly awash with an air of inevitability, Hollywood-China collaboration remains unpredictable. Regardless of the ultimate outcome, visual spectacles in the form of red-carpet events, theme parks, and blockbusters are poised to become only more dramatic as Hollywood and China negotiate their global media brands.

Disney has dropped PewDiePie, the world's highest-earning YouTube star, over anti-Semitic videos

Disney has dropped PewDiePie, the world’s highest-earning YouTube star, after a series of videos that featured anti-Semitic messages, according to The Wall Street Journal.

PewDiePie, a 27 year old from Sweden named Felix Kjellberg, whose foul-mouthed gaming videos have netted him 53 million subscribers, made $15 million in 2016, according to Forbes. Some of that was a result of a joint venture with Maker Studios, the multi-channel network Disney bought for $675 million in 2014. That joint venture is finished in the wake of these videos, Disney confirmed to The Journal.

“Although Felix has created a following by being provocative and irreverent, he clearly went too far in this case and the resulting videos are inappropriate,” a spokeswoman for Maker Studios told The Journal. According to a Wall Street Journal review of Kjellberg’s channel, he posted nine videos since August that “include anti-Semitic jokes or Nazi imagery.”

One such video from January 11, since taken down, featured Kjellberg hiring two men to make a sign that read “Death to All Jews,” using the freelancer website Fiverr, The Journal reports. Kjellberg later said that video was a joke that had gone too far, and YouTube pulled ads from the video. (YouTube hasn’t pulled ads from any of Kjellberg’s other videos, nor taken any of the videos down, though Kjellberg has himself.)

The situation is complicated for YouTube, since beyond Kjellberg being its biggest star, he also has a show on YouTube’s $9.99-a-month premium service, YouTube Red, called “Scare PewDiePie.” YouTube declined to comment about Kjellberg to The Journal.

Business Insider has reached out to Disney, YouTube, and PewDiePie for comment.

Stephen Colbert dares Trump adviser and 'liar' Stephen Miller to go on the 'Late Show'

Stephen Colbert invited White House senior adviser Stephen Miller to CBS's "Late Show," so that he can defend his recent claims about President Donald Trump's various initiatives.

"People are still upset about Trump's travel ban," Colbert said on Monday's episode. "So Trump sent out a new face, White House senior policy adviser and 'young Gargamel' Stephen Miller. He was on all the Sunday shows."

Colbert took special note of Miller's interview on CBS's "Face the Nation" when he defended Trump's controversial  travel ban and said, "The powers of the president to protect our country are very substantial and will not be questioned."

"'Will not be questioned’?" Colbert said. "Let me test that theory: What the f--- are you talking about?"

In addition to Miller's comments on Trump's travel ban, which would temporarily block immigration and refugees from seven predominantly Muslim countries and block Syrian refugees indefinitely, Colbert took issue with his statements surrounding the estimated $21.6 billion Mexico wall Trump is planning. Miller said the wall will "pay for itself many, many times over." And the senior adviser defended Trump's election fraud claims without presenting any real evidence.

Colbert saw an opportunity when Miller said that he's "prepared to go on any show, anywhere, any time" to prove that the "president is correct 100%."

“Any show? Any time? Anywhere? Perfect. How about 'The Late Show' tomorrow at the Ed Sullivan Theater? Good?” Colbert responded. "And listen, if you don't show up, I'm going to call you a liar. And if you do show up, I'm going to call you a liar to your face."

John Oliver argues why 'Trump is Oprah's fault'

$

john oliver seth meyers donald trump oprah winfrey late night nbc

Although Seth Meyers recently claimed he's responsible for Donald Trump's rise to the US presidency, John Oliver reasoned that Oprah Winfrey should take the credit for the reality star and real estate mogul's ascent to power.

HBO's "Last Week Tonight" host appeared on Monday's episode of Meyers' "Late Night" when Meyers referred to Trump as "the most powerful man in the world" and said that it was "a natural progression for him."

"Sure, because he has always pretended to be that way," Oliver responded. "He's always acted like the most powerful man in the world. That's how he carries himself. Through his, I'm sure, childhood as well, he kind of dons the disposition of the most powerful man in the world. Now he actually has the power to go along with that. It's like 'The Secret' was real and it worked for one person. And unfortunately, it was him."

Oliver is referring to the widely popular documentary film and resulting 2006 best-selling self-help book, "The Secret," which was made popular by Winfrey on her former daytime talk show. It covered the Law of Attraction, a spiritual practice based on visualizing the life and things that one wants in order to bring them into reality.

"What I'm saying is Trump is Oprah's fault," Oliver said. "If she just said, 'You know, I read this book. But you know what, it's bulls---, seems like problems are much more systemic than this book really implies.' And he's going, 'No, I can do it. I can will this into life.'"

"John Wick: Chapter 2" opened in theaters over the weekend and more than doubled the original's opening take at the box office thanks in large part to doing something we didn't think was possible: It came up with even more insane fights and shootouts.

Once more Keanu Reeves plays former hitman John Wick who is out for revenge and must face numerous foes to complete his task (minor spoiler ahead). Filled with incredible fight sequences, the movie ends with Wick's opponents on the floor — in spectacular fashion.

Australian designer George Hatzis looked back on the kill count in the first movie back in 2014. He's now done it for the sequel, which has a much larger body count.

The weeknd

Right on time for Valentine's Day, Spotify has released a list of the best songs to make love to. These are not the best "love songs," mind you, but the best ones for the bedroom in particular.

To find the top tracks, Spotify's data scientists looked through the "sex" playlists on its service to see which songs were streamed most frequently. Spotify also did this last year, and the one common denominator was that The Weeknd charted both years, which is, honestly, a tad concerning. Stay emotionally healthy everyone!

But without further ado, here are the top 10 for 2017:

  1. "Sex With Me" — Rihanna
  2. "Birthday Sex" — Jeremih
  3. "Ride" — SoMo
  4. "Earned It" (Fifty Shades Of Grey) — The Weeknd
  5. "Slow Motion" — Trey Songz
  6. "Often" — The Weeknd
  7. "Neighbors Know My Name" — Trey Songz
  8. "Pony" — Ginuwine
  9. "Sex" — Cheat Codes
  10. "All The Time" — Jeremih

And here were the top 10 for 2016:

  1. “Don’t” – Bryson Tiller
  2. “Marvins Room” – Drake
  3. “The Morning” – The Weeknd
  4. “Or Nah” (featuring the Weeknd, Wiz Khalifa and DJ Mustard) – Ty Dolla $ign
  5. “Lotus Flower Bomb” (featuring Miguel) – Wale
  6. “L$D” – A$AP Rocky
  7. “Crew Love”– Drake
  8. “Sorry” – Rick Ross
  9. “Swimming Pools” (Drank) – Kendrick Lamar
  10. “Love Yourz” – J. Cole

If you want to play the entirety of Nintendo's big new 'Zelda' game, you'll have to pay $80

The new "Legend of Zelda" game is almost here.

Link, Zelda, and the Kingdom of Hyrule all look better than ever in "Breath of the Wild," which arrives on March 3. Better yet, it arrives alongside Nintendo's new console — the Switch— as a launch title. You might call it the launch title because of its prominence.

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild

It's been over five years since the last major installment in the beloved "Legend of Zelda" series, "Skyward Sword." To say that "Breath of the Wild" is an "anticipated" game is to dramatically undersell its hype — and rightfully so, as the game looks fantastic.

Here's one of the many shots of the game looking impressive:

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild

Nintendo claims that "Breath of the Wild" is its largest-ever "Legend of Zelda" adventure — but, to get the full breadth of that adventure, you'll need to snag the game's "expansion pass." The term may sound strange given that we're talking about a narrative-driven game rather than, say, this year's "Madden." It's a video game industry term that, in this case, means you pay a flat fee in exchange for two "packs" of add-on content to "Breath of the Wild."

More plainly: For an extra $20, on top of the $60 asking price for the base game, you'll get two additional packs of content. It's coming to both the Wii U and Switch versions of the game.

Here's how Nintendo describes the two pieces of content for "Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild":

  • "The first content pack is scheduled to launch this summer and will include the addition of a Cave of Trials challenge, a new hard mode, and a new feature for the in-game map."
  • "The second content pack will launch in Holiday 2017, and adds new challenges that will let players enjoy a new dungeon and a new original story."

Notably, the second piece of content sounds like the juicier piece — Nintendo's no doubt hoping it'll attract holiday shoppers to the Switch, in addition to bringing back dedicated fans. Also of note, this is the first time Nintendo has ever created additional content for a main series "Legend of Zelda" game.

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild

It's a major shift for a company that's notoriously slow to adopt prevailing trends in the video game market; Nintendo's still years behind its competition when it comes to paid online services, for instance.

The man in charge of creating "Breath of the Wild," longtime Nintendo game director Eiji Aonuma, announced the pass in a video shared by Nintendo. Here it is:

Arnold Schwarzenegger's 'Celebrity Apprentice' finale ratings are nowhere near Trump's numbers

Arnold Schwarzenegger celebrity apprentice season finale ratings.JPG

President Donald Trump will continue to have the bragging rights when it comes to the TV ratings for "The Celebrity Apprentice."

The season-finale ratings for the Arnold Schwarzenegger-hosted reality competition pale in comparison to the numbers for Trump's last season of the show as host.

Monday's episode attracted 3.45 million live viewers, according to Nielsen live ratings numbers. That translated into a 0.9 rating among the desired demographic for advertisers, adults below the age of 50.

By comparison, Trump's last season finale of "Celebrity Apprentice" in 2015 attracted about 6.1 million viewers and a 1.7 rating.

Monday's season-finale ratings of "Celebrity Apprentice" placed it in the No. 4 position against its competition: ABC's "The Bachelor," CBS's block of comedies, and the new Fox drama "APB."

In total, the reality show experienced a nearly 44% drop in ratings since its August 1 season-eight premiere.

Although Trump continued with the show as an executive producer and shared in its profits, he hasn't shied away from pointing out just how badly Schwarzenegger's version has been faring in viewership compared to when he hosted the show. At the annual National Prayer Breakfast earlier this month, Trump joked that he wanted to "pray" for Schwarzenegger's ratings

That prompted the "Terminator" star and former California governor to respond with a video on social media. In it, the movie star suggested that he and Trump should switch jobs, so that "people can finally sleep comfortably again."

'This Is Us' guest star breaks down his nerve-racking singing debut with Mandy Moore

Sam Trammell makes his singing debut on Tuesday's episode of "This Is Us."

"I got to actually sing with Mandy Moore," Trammell told Business Insider on Monday. "I’ve never sung before."

Trammell, who starred as Sam Merlotte on the HBO hit "True Blood" for seven seasons, is currently appearing in a guest role on the NBC drama as Ben, an old friend of Moore's Rebecca from when she was pursuing a singing career.

Ben convinces her to get back onstage and sing with his band. At the same time, he potentially presents some challenges to her relationship with husband Jack (Milo Ventimiglia).

"We go on tour and that creates some drama between us two," Trammell teased.

While he's never sung professionally, Trammell is an accomplished musician. He plays a variety of instruments. Aside from being in rock bands from the age of 13 through his college years, Trammell plays the classical piano, was a member of a youth symphony, and loves the cello. That doesn't mean he jumped at the chance to sing when "This Is Us" first offered it to him.

"They asked me if I could sing and I said, 'No, I don’t sing, but I play all these instruments,' I told my agent," the actor said. "['This Is Us' executive producer] Ken Olin called me and asked if I wanted to try it, so I said, 'Yeah, I definitely want to try it.' I should have said that in the first place."

Like a true professional, Trammell hired a singing teacher to prepare for the song and worked closely with the composer.

"We got the key down, so it would be in my voice register, so I can sing it," he said.

"She came out [of the recording booth] and I said, ‘Good job. You can go. I’m just going to be in here,'" Trammell said. "She said, 'No, I’m going to sit around and watch you, give you some support.' I was like, ‘Oh my God.’ But it totally worked out. My teacher came through for me and we got to sing in the episode and it was a blast. Obviously, I had such a fun time doing it."
